Unit 9: Matter

MatterMatter is anything that takes up space. Ice, water, and clouds are matter. The air is matter. You are matter, too. Physical Properties of Matter-Anything you can observe about matter by using one or more of your senses is a physical property.

-Color, size, shape, and texture are physical properties of matter.

Measuring MatterMass is the amount of matter in something.

-You can measure mass by using a balance. -Mass is often measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg).

Measuring Matter Volume is the amount of space matter takes up.

A graduated cylinder and measuring cup are used to measure volume.

Sink and FloatDensity is the reason. Density is the mass of matter compared to its volume.

Matter that is less dense than water floats.

Matter that is denser than water sinks.

States of MatterSolidsA solid is matter with a volume and a shape that stay the same.An ice cube is a solid.

Liquids-A liquid has a volume that doesn’t change. However, a liquid’s shape can change.- A liquid takes the shape of whatever container holds it.

Water is a liquid. Paint, juice, and shampoo are liquids, too.

GasesA gas has no definite shape or volume. A gas takes up all the space in a container.

-Physical ChangesAn example of a physical change is cutting.

Cutting makes a piece of paper smaller, but the paper is still paper.

MixturesA mixture is a substance that is made up of two or more kinds of matter. Making a mixture is a physical change.

Solutions- A solution is a mixture in which different kinds of matter mix evenly.

Your mixture of salt and water was a solution.

Chemical ChangesChanges that form different kinds of matter are chemical changes. Cooking

causes chemical changes.

Burning is also a chemical change.

Complete each sentence with the correct term.(volume-mass-matter)1-………………………is anything that takes up space.

2-………………………is the amount of space something takes up.3-The amount of matter in something is its………………………. .

Match the clue on the left to the term on the right. Write theletter in the blank.1-The process in which water moves into the air A. gas

2-Matter that has no definite shape or volume B. evaporation

3-The change of a gas to a liquid C. condensation

-Observe the picture to the right. Draw a picture in the empty box to communicate how the state of the ice will change after one hour. Write a sentence that explains the process.

-How does a pizza change as it cooks?

.

Choose the best answer:1-Which of the following properties is Emma measuring?

mass texturetemperature volume

2-Look at these pictures.

Which statement is true?

They all have the same texture. They all change shape. They all are matter. They all have the same shape.

3-Mary compares the masses of a rock and a soccer ball using a pan balance. This picture shows Mary’s experiment.

What does the picture show about the rock and the soccer ball?

The rock and the ball have the same mass. The rock has a greater volume than the soccer ball. The rock is smaller than the ball, but has more mass. The ball has more matter than the rock, so it has more mass.

4- Which best describes what is in the bowl?

6-Matter can change. What type of change forms new kinds of matter?

chemical change physical changephysical property solution

7-What is mass?

anything that takes up spacethe amount of matter an object hasthe amount of space an object takes upthe measure of how warm something is

8-Water can change state. What happens to water during condensation?

It changes from a liquid to a gas.It changes from a gas to a liquid. It changes from a liquid to a solid. It changes from a solid to a liquid.

9-A puddle of water has formed on a sidewalk. The temperature outside is 10 °C. What will happen to the water when the air temperature drops to 0 °C?

It will begin to boil.It will begin to melt.It will begin to freeze.
