I this information to plan what curriculum your child needs to learn/better understand next. Your child may even meet with me to help plan those next steps.Assessment as Learning: This assessment occurs when a student uses a task or activity to monitor, assess and reflect on their own learning.. This allows for your child o develop a better understanding of the task and it’s expectations as well as to develop their metacognition or deeper thinking skills.Assessment of Learning: This assessment occurs by using an activity or task to examine your child’s achievement in relation to a prescribed set of learning goals. This type of assessment is usually represented by a letter grade. ) (Understanding Assessment and Learning ) (Planning and Assessment ) (The Ontario Ministry of Education (MOE) provides seven Principles of Assessment for educators. These are that assessments for your child are: Fair, transparent and equitableSupport all studentsCarefully plannedClearly explained to students and parents at the beginning of the school yearOngoing and varied, and provide multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their learningIncluding feedback that is clear, meaningful and timelyHelping students to become independent learnershttp://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/policyfunding/growsuccess.pdf 2010) (Got Homework?Your child will have homework with some regularity throughout the year. Daily updates can be found on the class blog http://msm5-6classblog.caHomework allows for an opportunity; -For your child to reflect on their learning during the dayFor you to see what they are learning and how they are learning itFor your child develop responsibility and self-discipline as they move towards secondary school ) (Thank you for taking the opportunity to read through this brochure to learn about school planning and assessment to help ensure your child has a successful year in my classroom. Classroom PlanningIt is important for you and your child to understand that I plan each unit of learning using a backwards design. What a backwards design means is that I design the unit, always thinking about what I want the end outcomes for your child to be. This allows me to work from the perspective of what I want your child to understand and know. It also allows for your child to have a clear understanding of what they are going to learn, how they are going to learn it and what the expectations are. You can also view these on the class blog http://msm5-6classblog.ca ) (As well as backwards design described above, assessment and in particular Assessment for Learning (see back of this brochure) allow for the creation of successful unit and lesson planning for your child’s learning. Formative assessment at the beginning of a unit allows me to better understand your child’s prior knowledge and learning on a particular topic. This then gives me a starting point for your child’s learning in this unit. Further assessment throughout the unit allows me to follow your child’s learning and understanding of the topic. I am then able to do things like backtrack, approach the topic in a different way, use manipulatives and/or real life examples, etc. Continuing assessment also allows me to speed up the unit or add higher learning activities for your child, on the topic if need be. ) (Assessment and Planning) (Dear Parent(s), Thank you!)
