This is a very special year for Windmill and for all Integrated Schools. We celebrate the courage and persistence of those pioneering parents who took those first steps to setting up Windmill IPS thirty years ago and the hundreds of children who have come through the school and are now perhaps parents of children in school today. Throughout those thirty years Windmill IPS children have always been cherished and valued within the integrated ethos of respect and inclusion. Over the years the school community has grown and the school has built partnerships with local schools and with schools all over Europe. Every year the Annual General Report reminds us of the large number of activities and opportunities for learning your children experience from football coaching to creative art, from shared learning with our partner school, Bush Primary School, to finding out about children in other countries through our various Erasmus partnerships. Like all schools we face difficult choices, challenges and obstacles along the way. Integrated schools are still very much in the minority and we often lack the support offered freely to other schools. Our Principal and staff have done a fabulous job in securing extra funding from all sorts of agencies and your children have benefited from many after-school clubs and from French and Mandarin Chinese classes. However, there is never enough money and funding is constantly being reduced or withdrawn.

Parents have always played an essential role in Windmill IPS supporting their children in their learning and school events and celebrations. The Parents’ Council has, in its different forms over the years, helped to raise money for example, playground equipment and children’s parties. The Parents’ Council and Board of Governors both need new parent representatives. The Board of Governors has vacancies for both Parent Governors and Foundation Governors. Being a governor gives parents a chance to see all the amazing things that the school is doing as well as help shape, inform and evaluate the school aims, achievements and progress across the curriculum. It’s a great opportunity as a governor to be able to encourage and support the Principal and staff with your skills and experiences.

During this coming year there will be a number of events celebrating both current and past pupils of Windmill over the past 30 years. We will also be celebrating the invaluable support and involvement of parents and carers in their children’s education and welfare. The Board of Governors thank the parents, staff and children for making Windmill Integrated Primary School such a brilliant school and look forward with confidence to the next 3o years. Vivien KellyChair On behalf of Board of Governors Windmill Integrated Primary School

Again, it has been an absolute pleasure working alongside such dedicated and conscientious staff, all of whom support the academic, social, emotional and physical growth of your children and I would like to thank them for all their hard work. This has been a very difficult year for a number of members of staff and families within the school and I commend their commitment and level of strength given, the very difficult personal circumstances faced.

The report below gives you a synopsis of yet another busy and successful year at Windmill.

Board of Governors Membership and ResponsibilitiesThe Governors are ultimately responsible for the overall management of the school. They are required to meet for a minimum of three times each year but in practice meet much more frequently than this. Some of their duties include:The oversight of the curriculum; The control of the budget; The provision of information to parents; The selection of staff; The maintenance of the premises; The Admissions Policy;Fostering links with the local community and pursuing the objectives of Mutual Understanding.

EnrolmentThirty-one children enrolled in Primary One in September 2017. An ‘Open Afternoon’ was arranged in December 2016 for prospective parents and pupils who wished to enrol in future years. This afternoon afforded parents the opportunity to visit each of the classrooms and speak with teachers and support staff. This event proved very successful and we had a large number of parents availing of this opportunity to visit the school.

The CurriculumUnder the Education Reform Order the responsibility of governors for the curriculum i.e. what is taught in the school, has been increased. The day-to-day organisation of the curriculum remains the Principal’s responsibility. The Governors’ control of the curriculum is mainly determined by the government. It is however our responsibility to ensure that a broad and balanced curriculum is provided for all pupils. To this end the school implements the statutory requirements of the Northern Ireland Curriculum. Teachers continued to thoroughly plan, deliver and evaluate all aspects of the Northern Ireland Curriculum. Parent Interviews were held in February and yearly reports to parents were forwarded in June. Parents received information about class routines, homeworks, etc from class teachers in early September.

Management

During 2017/2018 School development work was undertaken in the following areas:

Language and Literacy (including Talking and Listening, Reading and Writing: schools are also encouraged to teach additional languages) Language and Literacy is seen as central to the curriculum in this school. During the course of this academic year all teaching staff from Primary 1-Primary 7 worked alongside Mrs Anne McErlane on the ‘development of Creative Writing’ throughout the school. Staff worked in their relevant Key Stages, where they looked at the progression of Creative Writing from one year group to another.Money raised through the annual Book Fair enabled the purchase of additional reading texts to promote children’s enthusiasm and develop their skills. Three classroom assistants were trained up by Mrs Kate O’Hanlon, previous Literacy advisor with the S.E.L.B in the Boosting Reading programme. Mrs Ross, Literacy Co-ordinator marked World Book Day by undertaking reading buddies. Older pupils were partnered with younger pupils and time was spent reading their favourite books to each other. This proved very successful and a number of parents commented favourably on the fact that the children weren’t expected to dress up as their favourite book character.Windmill Integrated Primary School continued to use the Accelerated Reader Programme. All the pupils from P3-P7 were tested using the Star Reader test which is compatible with the ipad. Outcomes from the tests will enable staff to ensure that pupils access reading material at their reading level. (Zone of Proximal Development). All staff have been trained to implement Accelerated Reader. Children undertake a quiz within 24 hours of having read a book. On Wednesday 1st November 2017 members of the teaching staff and some classroom assistants received training in the use of Accelerated Reader from Mr Liam O’Hare, representative from Renaissance Learning and P7 classroom teacher. On Wednesday 29th November 2017 many members of staff (teaching and non-teaching) undertook a Twi-light on Accelerated Reader. Mrs Ross, Literacy Coordinator held a short meeting with the staff to discuss how the school was going to implement this programme. Remainder of the time was given to staff to prepare for the implementation of Accelerated Reader within their classrooms. Non-teaching staff spent the time labelling a range of reading books in the different classrooms. On Thursday 2nd November, Windmill Integrated Primary School held a Reading Workshop for parents of children from Primary 2 to Primary 4. This workshop was facilitated by Mrs Kate O’Hanlon, previous Literacy advisor with The S.E.L.B and was very well received by all those who attended. On Thursday 9th November 2017, Primary 4-Primary 7 parents were invited to a workshop about Accelerated Reader. This workshop was held at Bush Primary School as part of the school’s Shared Education link. Mr Liam O’Hare facilitated the workshop. Mrs Anne McErlane who had worked previously with all of the teaching staff from Nursery to Primary 7 on their WAU (Science and Technology, History and Geography) themes to ensure progression and to link with the cross curricular skills

of Communication, Numeracy and ICT is currently working on material to assist staff in Northern Ireland with Reading. She invited Mrs Ross, Literacy Co-ordinator to a Reading cluster group on Monday 27th November. This cluster group was held at Phoenix Integrated Primary. During the 2017/2018 academic year Mrs Loughran undertook the ‘Talking Partners Programme and continued working with 3 identified children as a group for 15 minutes 3 times a week for a period of 10 weeks. The school continued to invest in ‘Language Link’ and all children from P1 to P3 were tested. Information gleaned from the programme was used to plan for the needs of individual or groups of children. The programme tied in with the ‘Talking Partners’ Programme. Mrs Ross attended a number of days training for Literacy Coordinators. Such training was provided via the Key Stage 2/3 Signature Project and Teacher Professional Learning days within Shared Education.Mrs Ferguson obtained funding from EMPOWER Project to enable Mrs Hughes, SENCO to work with those children who were identified as needing peripatetic support. Mrs Hughes taught the identified children every Wednesday from 3-4pm, for 12 weeks up till end of June. It is hoped that such support will be delivered by the EA in September 2018.Weekly French lessons for P1 – P7 classes continued throughout the whole school year. Such an opportunity has prepared the Primary 7 pupils for transferring to secondary education.

Mathematics and Numeracy (focusing on the development of mathematical concepts and numeracy across the curriculum). This academic year the whole school continued to focus on developing Mental Maths skills throughout the school. There are 7 different Mental Maths strategies for eg. Counting On, Counting backwards, Partitioning etc. All staff focused on developing the children’s mental maths competences by focusing each day/ week on a mental maths strategy at an age appropriate /ability level for their class.Mrs Nugent attended a number of days training for Numeracy Coordinators. Such training was provided via the Key Stage 2/3 Signature Project and Teacher Professional Learning days within Shared Education. On Friday 22nd September, Mr Timothy Doyle worked with all of the classroom assistants to deliver Numeracy training, focusing on Mental Maths strategies. Many practical experiences are used particularly in the early years to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in Mathematics. This year the school continued to use Heinemann Active Maths, an activity led maths subscription service for schools using the Northern Ireland Curriculum at Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Real- life examples from Northern Ireland’s local cities, towns, rivers, hills and football teams make the programme unique to Northern Ireland. It is a totally interactive programme incorporating online software and games, printable resources and teaching plans. This year the school continued using the weekly lesson plan format which was highly praised by the Inspectorate during our inspection in January 2015. Staff also continued to use Adaptive Learning Teaching and Assessment Mathematics (ALTA Maths), an assessment and recording system designed for P3-P7 pupils to support and enhance teaching and learning. Pupils were able to conduct practice tests and confirm level tests, as well as adaptive tests which suitably

challenged individual abilities in all areas of Mathematics i.e. Number, Measure, Shape & Space, Data Handling & Algebra. It builds up a formative assessment record and profile to show the level of progress made and to identify areas of difficulty which can assist teachers in planning individual tuition for class. Children are encouraged to use it at home as well as in school. The teachers continued to investigate many web-sites and programmes which could be used via the Interactive White Boards/ipads to further enhance the learning experiences of the children. Drumglass High School hosted a Maths Roadshow on Wednesday 27th September. Primary 7’s attended and some pupils won some Literacy/Numeracy equipment.

The Arts (including Art & Design, Drama and Music) The school has a strong tradition of musical and dramatic productions. At Christmas the pupils and parents very much enjoyed the P1 production which took place on Thursday 7th December at 1pm.This year it was decided that the school would alternate its Christmas performances as follows: Whole School Carol Service at St. Patrick’s Church Dungannon, Key Stage 1 Christmas Performance and then Key Stage 2 Christmas Performance. This year the school held a whole school Carol Service at St. Patrick’s Church, Dungannon on 5th December 2017.Tuition in the stringed instruments was provided by Mrs Edel Moore, peripatetic teacher from the Education Authority Southern Region. Windmill Integrated Primary School was involved in the Tutoring in Schools programme with the University of Ulster. SPECIAL NEEDSJacqui Hughes (Special Educational Needs Teacher)

Special Needs End of Year Report 2017 / 2018

Literacy Support

Last year special needs literacy support was based in group rooms 1 and 2 and provided by Mrs Lynch and Mrs Creggan. Miss Lucas also provided support for KS1/ Foundation during Mrs Lynch’s absence. Nineteen Foundation/ KS1 pupils received support with Mrs Lynch in the areas of literacy skills; phonic awareness, spelling, reading, comprehension and writing. Mrs Creggan supported 9 pupils in reading and spelling and 5 pupils in spelling only. Pupils receiving support came from classes P2 – P7. Some children who are on the register do not require literacy support, for example their needs are solely medical or behavioural.

SEN Register is as follows:

CLASS STAGE 1 STAGE 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4 STAGE 5P1 2 1P2 2 1 1P3 1 2 7 1 1

P4 8 3P5 2 1 1P6 4 2 1P7 7 2Nursery 3 1

Table 1Total: 55 Primary age pupils, 4 Nursery Pupils.

Please note the increase in the number of children on the Special Needs Register from 48 Primary pupils in 2015-16, 53 in 2016-17 to 55 in 2017-18. The percentage of pupils on the SEN register at the end of 2017-18 was 21%. There were 4 Nursery pupils on the register. Our current testing regime, close liaison between staff and parents combined with a good working relationship with Educational Psychology has helped us to identify many children who are presenting with Special Educational Needs and to make provision for them. Some children made enough sustained progress to warrant removal from the register but this is less significant than in previous years.. In the 2017-18 academic year P4 pupils did not receive peripatetic literacy support due to long waiting lists for peripatetic Specialist teaching.

NURSERY REPORTKierna Corr (Head of Nursery)

27 children started nursery in September 2018, the staff for this year were, myself, Mrs Beverley Somerville, Mrs Enda Creggan & Miss Rebecca Heron. 1 child was at Stage 5 on the Code of Practice at the start of the school year. We had 8 children classed as Newcomers in the class.

Miss Lynne Shaw returned for her 13th year, working as a volunteer.

The nursery continued their Shared Education Project with the nursery class at Bush P.S – we planned a day at each other’s schools, a Christmas event at An Creagán, working with an artist over 2 days at both schools and a final celebration day with parents at Sperrinview to close the project.

The nursery class continued to make weekly visits to Bear Woods – the wooded area fenced off for them above the nursery.

I held parent teacher meetings in October and February.

I was asked to help deliver Shared Education Training on Playful Learning with Dr. Glenda Walsh from Stanmillis UC.

We had 7 Spanish Teachers visit nursery and P.1 as part of an Erasmus Plus KA1 project with 2 different Spanish schools.

We made our annual Christmas visit to the Nightingale Nursing Home, the children posted their letters to Santa and sang some songs for the residents.

We continued our link with Sperrinview Nursery class with 3 visits to their outdoor area – this was funded through the snack fund money.

A student from South West College returned for another term as a childcare student.

We secured funding again from the EA to take part in their Big Bedtime Read and Ages & Stages Programmes. This allowed us to purchase new books for a lending library scheme, stay & play sessions & run some parent information nights & a family bedtime read event.

The nursery class took part in a 6 week programme of Relax Kids.

The nursery class took part in Outdoor Classroom Day on May 17th.

Myself and Mrs Vanda Tate took part in a job shadowing experience in Sweden in some of the schools that had sent staff to Windmill the year before. This was funded through Erasmus Plus KA1.

I successfully applied for KA1 funding again for the new school year for 10 staff to take part in a variety of training events in Spain, Iceland and Malta. The school continued on with their KA3 project on Migrants pupils in Preschool.

We successfully applied for KA2 funding with preschools in Turkey, Denmark, Croatia, Greece and Finland to take part in a project about preschool maths. This is a two year project.

Parents Council

Our Parent Council is incorporated directly into the School’s structure and is currently made up of approx 10 parents including 4 office bearers. We also have several parents who volunteer at events throughout the year. As with every year, parents come and go as our children turn new chapters in their lives. New parents (male & female) are always welcome. Our aim is to provide fundraising support for the school and fun for all the kids in doing so. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new faces who have recently joined us!

Halloween proved a great success with all the kids enjoying the Parties & School Disco in fancy dress and the fun activities, not to mention some of the dance moves! With Christmas fast approaching, we are planning more of the same, with the big man himself, Santa Claus! These are being planned for Thursday 20th December. We are of course holding our Annual “Christmas Raffle” which we trust will be well supported! This will take place on 20th December at the end of the School Disco!

This year saw our first “Tesco Bag Pack” back in May which proved a huge success. We are planning on making this an Annual Fundraiser. We have requested March/April 2019 for our next one. Tesco are to confirm a date in early 2019. This year’s “May Day Walk & BBQ” is planned for Saturday 11th May 2019 with our “School Fete” being planned for Friday 21st June 2019! (All dates are currently on the school website).

All money raised by Parent Council goes directly to benefit all children within the school by helping with things like the costs of school trips to minimise the cost to parents, it provides the fruit which supplements the children’s breaks on a daily basis and meets numerous other financial requests throughout the year.

Parent Council would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff of WIPS for their continued support and volunteering in all our ventures. A special thanks to Mrs Paula Donnelly and Mrs Wendy O’Neill for all their help and assistance with all our events!

Parent Council is an important part of life at WIPS! Please feel free to come along to any of our meetings which are held in an informal setting within the school. We meet regularly to discuss upcoming events and to voice parent’s concerns/opinions. Everyone is very welcome!
