25/05/2020 Dear Parents, Guardians and Children, I hope everyone has been enjoying the family time. Our theme this week is “People who help us”- The Ambulance Service & The Paramedic. This theme links with last week as we continue to look at the Emergency Services. I will suggest a book “The Emergency Services” but if you have any children’s book about an ambulance or hospital, feel free to use that instead. Thank you to all the busy parents who are juggling everything at the moment. As I have said before, this plan is only a suggestion of work. There is no pressure to complete the work. You can pick and choose what you can manage. Every child is different so they can work at various levels. Approach the work based of your own child. Give plenty of breaks. 20 minutes of work and 15 minutes break. Happy 7 th Birthday Saoirse! She will celebrate on the 27 th May. Enjoy the day with your family! If you have any tech issues or questions about the course work, feel free to email [email protected] or if you don’t have access to email please text any questions to the school mobile on 0894552731. I hope you all stay safe and well as we head towards June and I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Miss Rowe

Dear Parents, Guardians and Children,

I hope everyone has been enjoying the family time.

Happy 7th Birthday Saoirse! She will celebrate on the 27th May. Enjoy the day with your family!

If you have any tech issues or questions about the course work, feel free to email

[email protected] or if you don’t have access to email please text any questions to the school mobile on 0894552731.

I hope you all stay safe and well as we head towards June and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Miss Rowe

Senior Infants- Phonics revision Group 1-4

Jolly Phonics – Please practise the children’s phonics sounds with them, with the songs and actions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2HYM9VXz9k

Practice letter names by singing the alphabet.

Call out a sound for the children, ask them to think of a word beginning with that sound/containing that best friend sound and say it in a sentence (silly or regular) – pick about 20 (at least 1 from each group) different sounds today –

1.s, a, t, p, i, n,

2.c, k, e, h, r, m, d

3.g, o, u, l, f, b

4.ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or

They can write 2/3 sentences about a member of the ambulance service.

For example:

This is a paramedic. She is hardworking and calm. She uses gloves and drives an ambulance.

· Remind children to write on the line and have a space between their words.

· Tall letters are tall are touch the top line like t, l, h ,k f. Small letters are sitting on the line like a, c, e, u, i. Letters with tails go under the line like g, j, y.

· Capitals at the start of a sentence

· Full stop at the end of the sentence.

This is all about encouragement to write and don’t worry if there’s spelling errors. This activity is to enjoy writing and boost confidence. Get the child to read the word or sentence back to you. Praise tall letters touching the top line, capitals at the start or spaces between the words.

Dictation – encourage the children to sound all the words out themselves, remind them to stretch the words out to help them. Please do not spell the words for the children, let them try by themselves. Correct together.

1. He went south and then north.

2. The strong shark swam in and around the ship.

Repetition of money content from last week. Extension work 10c & 20c.

Money- In Senior Infants, we focus on 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c. Adding up to the value of 20c. Use real money if you have it. If you don’t have 1c/ 2c/ 5c/10c/20c coins, draw some on cardboard and cut them out.

First, we will let them see all the coins 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 1 euro, 2 euro. Name all the coins together with your child. This week we will focus on identifying 1c. Let them feel the money. Infants learn best when they have a sensory experience. Ask the following questions

· Find the number on each coin?

· What is the picture on the front of the coin? Earth.

· Are both sides of the coin the same?

· Is there a picture on the back of the coin?

· What is the symbol on Irish coins?

· What shape is it? What material is it made from?

These coins are brown in colour and are smaller than the others.

· Put them in order of size. 1c, 2c, 5c.

· Which coin is the smallest? 1c

· Which coin is the biggest? 5c

Note: There is not a coin for each number. We have to use the coins we have to make up that amount/value. Eg there’s no 4 cent coin but we can use a 2c+2c=4c

Sorting activity: Ask your child to sort the coins into 4 groups. 1c coins together, 2c coins together, 5c coins together, 10c coins together, 20c coins together

Introducing 10c and 20c. Adding 10c coins is counting in 10’s. Adding 20c coins is counting in 20’s Use real coins and ask them to count up the coins.

Call out a value and get the child to draw the correct amount of coins. Focus on 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c, 1c questions. See powerpoint for extra activities.

Toy Shop

Set up a small pretend toy shop with a few toys for sale. Price the items between 1c-20c.

Today, we will only give the child, 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c coins to “buy” something in the shop. For example, the teddy bear costs 15c. The child must use the coins in their hands to pay for the item. 5c+5c+5c=15c. Enough to buy the teddy bear. Help them with the role play until they are comfortable to pay by themselves. If they are comfortable with this, increase the prices. Tons of practise needed adding and handling money.

9. SPHE- Stay Safe Programme- We normally cover this in school but due to the situation with school, I will ask you to try cover some of the topic with your child at home. We did start this with the entire class and the Senior Infants covered this last year. Don’t worry the Junior Infants will cover the same programme again and the Senior Infants will have similar topics in 1st Class. The Stay Safe programme is available at staysafe.iehttp://www.staysafe.ie/teachers/Infants.pdfThe first Topic covers Feeling Safe and Unsafe.  This week we will discuss times when we feel safe and times when we don’t feel safe - when we feel unsafe. We also would like to make the children aware of what we should do if we feel unsafe.

The Stay Safe story about feeling safe and unsafe called Tom’s Day Out.  Available on page 22 in the Stay Safe Infants pdf. I have screenshots of the story below to make it easier for you. Problem Solving: Stop the story here and ask the pupils what they think Tom should do. Discuss the merits of their suggestions, highlighting safe and unsafe options.

Discussion Points: - How did Tom feel when he woke up? - What was Tom excited about? - How did Tom feel when he couldn’t find his Mum? - How do you think Tom felt when his Mum found him? Hand Activity –Discuss with your child who they could turn to if they felt they were in an unsafe situation or if they were worried about anything. This activity is called ‘Give me Five’.  Draw around your child’s hands. On each finger write in the name of a person that they could turn to if they felt unsafe or sad.  This activity helps the children become aware of people they can trust.

10. Religion

P56/57 Making good choices

Chat together. About times when your child made good choices. Share with your child times when you made good choices, and how you felt about it.

This month, we focus on Mary as May is her special month. Say the Hail Mary with your child.

A massive thank you to all the parents who have sent photos and email to me. It’s great to know how everyone is doing and what you are up to. Please keep sending photos so I can add them to the Gallery of Superstars. You can see what your friends are doing and what they have made. Even if your child would like to send me a few lines to say how they are doing, that would be super! If you have any work related queries please feel free to email me at: [email protected] or if you don’t have access to email please text any questions to the school mobile on 0894552731. I will be monitoring the emails from 10-12 o’clock should you wish to contact me.
