A. Teachers Abroad Guatemala: Lifelong Language Learners (content applicable to all languages)

--Christine Maxwell, Spanish Teacher, Southern Huntingdon County High School. Maxwell received a Language-in-Motion scholarship to attend Teachers Abroad Guatemala last month. This presentation is a result of that experience.

VLB 2075 (Sill Board Room)Learning a language is a lifelong process. This session shows how this language

learner spent the summer perfecting her craft. You will get some ideas for bringing culture and inspiration to your lesson plans.

B. Games and Communication Activities for the Language Classroom (applicable to all languages)--Veronique Stern, French teacher, Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School. This year, Stern received two Language-in-Motion scholarships to attend national conferences. This presentation is a result of those experiences.

VLB 1116 (Rockwell Seminar Room)Stern’s experience at the American Association of Teachers of French conference in Chicago last month brought herinto contact with many presenters who presented ideas for activities to use in language classes. She will share some of the ideas she learned about that are applicable to teaching many different languages.

A. Using Music in Spanish to Develop Listening, Speaking, and Cultural

Proficiency (conducted in Spanish)--Henry Thurston-Griswold, Professor of Spanish, Juniata College

VLB 2075 (Sill Board Room)This session is entirely in Spanish (intermediate low proficiency is required to participate). It begins with a presentation

about and activities using three songs—“Decisiones,” “Segovia,” and “Waka Waka”—that will demonstrate how to exploit the cultural and linguistic content of songs to develop proficiency. Attendees will also explore several websites that offer music, teaching resources, and ready-to-use worksheets and activities.

B. The Power of Pairs (content applicable to all languages)--Prudence Ingerman, Senior Instructor in the Intensive English Program at Juniata College.  She has been creating, tweaking and teaching various levels of writing classes for more than fifteen years.

VLB 1116 (Rockwell Seminar Room) In this lively and highly interactive workshop you will discover a new strategy for employing pairs in the writing process. This method places the students totally in the driver’s seat and not only frees the teacher to work silently nearby but significantly reduces the amount of conference time required. It can be adapted to all levels of language instruction and all ages from eight up. This is a

writing workshop. Each person will need to plan, work, write, and conference.

12:50-1:35 p.m. Language Games for All Languages --Deb Roney and Thanh Nguyen, Language in Motion, Juniata College

VLB 2075 (Sill Board Room)Language in Motion now owns several new language games and classroom resources that teachers and Juniata College faculty may borrow and use with their students. This session will present the options and engage attendees in developing effective ways to use them in different language levels. Prizes will be given.

1:35-2:20 p.m. Making the Best Use of Native Speakers and Classroom Visitors --Jim Roney, Professor of Russian and International Studies, Juniata College

VLB 2075 (Sill Board Room)

How do we make the best use of classroom visits by native speakers? This session discusses a series of assignments that combine pre- and post-visit activities with in-class work to increase students' active language use.

Although the course was taught in Russian, all examples will be in English and usable in different languages.

Goals and Outcomes Assessment for Intercultural Learning

Without smart learning goals, assessment is difficult. Such goals need to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based, but what is the difference between a high-school-level goal and a college-level goal? How do these goals work with and/or against one another, either within or across educational levels? This session will encourage an open discussion about how to create or survive an institutional culture of assessment without driving yourself crazy.

VLB 2075 (Sill Board Room)Learn how to tap your strengths as a language/culture expert to teach students valuable skills that have real value in the business world – and may even help land them a job. We’ll try out the technique of

“business cases,” very short, open-ended scenarios that put students right in the decision-maker’s hot seat.

A. Making a Teacher-study-abroad Useful for Students:  A Jigsaw Project on Quebec City (Content is applicable to all languages)

--Linda Misja, French Teacher, Bellefonte Area High School. This year, Misja received a Language-in-Motion scholarship to attend Teachers Abroad Quebec. This presentation is a result of that experience.

VLB 2075 (Sill Board Room)This session would be useful for any language teacher who likes authentic classroom cultural projects or for one who either plans a first-time trip

abroad with students or who has taken a trip abroad but wants to make the trip more beneficial either before or after departure.  Also, this session would be of interest to any teacher planning on applying for a LiM teacher-abroad grant.  Although the session deals more with Quebec in its topic, the project can be applied to any city or country.  The session will be conducted in English. B. Culturally Aware: High school service-learning experience!

VLB 1116 (Rockwell Seminar Room) Do we want language-proficient and culturally aware high school students? Yes! The Southern Huntingdon County High School's Guatemala 2012 service-learning trip will be featured. This seminar will focus on how to plan and implement a low-cost, effective, high school service-learning trip.

VLB 2075 (Sill Board Room)This session will introduce several role-playing activities used in beginning, intermediate, and advanced Spanish courses, examining possible structures for these activities and discussing their value. The presenter will discuss how asking students to step into roles can be used in the study of historical figures and events, the discussion of films, and in analysis of literary works.

A. Coming Full Circle: Literature Circles in the Language Classroom (Content is applicable to all languages)--Gretchen Ketner, Instructor in the Intensive English Program, Juniata College

VLB 2075 (Sill Board Room)This workshop will examine uses of literature circles in the language classroom and consider the benefits of this activity for students’ reading, writing, and oral language skills. Participants will have the opportunity to be part of a literature circle. B. Engaging Students in a Geo-cultural Project (Content is applicable to all languages)--Laura Nearhood, French teacher, Moshannon Valley Junior/Senior High School. Nearhood received a Language-in-Motion scholarship to attend Teachers Abroad Quebec last month. This presentation is a result of that experience.

VLB 1116 (Rockwell Seminar Room)From Nearhood’s experience in Quebec, she developed this idea for a short series of class activities to engage students in learning more about a place and culture. The lessons include analyzing and synthesizing information, doing effective research, and working collaboratively on a creative project. The series is easily adaptable to various timetables and can be used when teaching various languages or cultures.
