2019 Consistory Annual Report

Looking back on 2019 there have been many noticeable additions and improvements in the direction of our ministry at JUCC. At each monthly Consistory meeting, we are constantly working to fine tune the plan God has for our church’s future.

Pastor Kathryn’s Sermon on Sunday, March 8, 2020 was a most appreciative message that outlined the (5) Christian traits that are necessary for church growth. They are Vision, Faith, Perseverance, Sacrifice, and Service. Three years ago, our Visioning Committee, led by Pastor Kathryn, created the plan for the direction of our ministry. It did not take long for the plan to take action. The ladies’ group 55 and Alive was immediately out of the gate and running. The “Free Chicken Barbeque Dinner” was soon to follow. A reenergized Youth Group, (YRT), is increasing in numbers with a commitment to expand their program for more community service. Our Christian Ed. program along with Vacation Bible School saw an increased number of children participating. Our Grief and Loss Support Group, and Caregiver Support Group, were organized and offered free of charge to members of our church, as well as to anyone in our community. The free “Adopt a Family Christmas Dinner” was established this past November and our church membership generously supported the cost to provide 30 families in need with a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Our

congregation also made generous donations to Valor House, CACPAC, and Family Promise of Carbon County. All great work by so many people. THANK YOU!

This past year we were blessed to have very successful fundraisers, which are an integral part in allowing us to expand and support our outreach ministries. We made an investment in purchasing a food trailer which enabled us to realize a record profit of almost $18,000.00 at the Palmerton Festival. We also had a very profitable church picnic this past August. We cannot forget our filling sales and all the other festivals and events that enable us to generously support our ministry efforts. All of the perseverance and sacrifice by our dedicated members is what it takes to make God’s plan a reality.

Our future is very bright as we continue to follow and execute our vision. As we prepare to begin the building process for our church addition, we must continue to develop and expand our ministry. Our new addition will provide a great tool to enable us to do God’s plan. It will take all of us working together.

As was mentioned in one of the newsletters earlier this year: There was a study done a few years ago that concluded that 90% of the churches in the United States were either stagnant or declining in membership, however, what that study also tells us is that 10% of churches are growing and thriving. God’s plan for our ministry is that we are going to be in the 10% that grow and thrive.

We need to continue to have “Vision, Faith, Perseverance, Sacrifice, and Service.” That is what God’s Plan is for the Little White Church in Trachsville. Let us all make the commitment to work together to execute God’s Plan.Ed BraderConsistory President

2019 FUTURE BUILDING USE COMMITTEE

Our church addition plan continues to move forward. This past year we were able to finalize our architects design, complete the MEP plan, complete and record our lot consolidation plan, and we are now in the process of finalizing the land plan.

We have sent out (3) bid packages to the General Contractors and the site contractors. After all the bids are in, we will evaluate and negotiate our best deal. At this time, we are also discussing financing options with a local bank and we will be putting a plan together for the best path to pay for our project. Updates will be forthcoming as information becomes available.

Governance & Policy Report for 20196

Page 7: €¦  · Web viewAffirmation of ministry is the act whereby a community of faith within the United Church of Christ, such as Phoebe Ministries, recognizes the diverse gifts of its

The Governance and Policy Committee formed in order to address questions of how Jerusalem UCC would manage future ways of work. The idea began at the beginning of 2019, when some members questioned adequate stewardship of the funds of the church. For example: there are no policies regarding how many “bids” should be obtained from contractors so that the congregation knows it is getting a fair price for contracted work.

In order to make this an equitable process, I constructed the committee members in much the same way as I constructed the ad hoc Visioning Committee: by attempting a cross-section of representative families and groups in the church so that groups were not over-represented. Some members accepted and others declined. After enough members accepted the responsibility, meetings began. Members who accepted earlier attended a seminar at PNEC on February 9, 2019 that taught them best practices and guidelines for good church governance. Members who accepted later obtained the seminar information electronically.

The first meeting of The Governance and Policy committee convened on September 10, 2019 and has met approximately twice monthly since then. First, the committee addressed the building and grove rental agreements. They scrutinized the contracts and adopted the revisions, with input from the property committee chair and members, then committed these to consistory for approval.

The process for adoption of any new JUCC policies will be firstly, to have the Governance and Policy Committee discuss all the pertinent factors involved, and then to present the committee recommendations to Consistory for discussion and final approval. Recommendations may include changes to the bylaws ultimately presented to the whole congregation for adopting.

Topics still on our agenda are: financial policies that take into account the church review (audit) that took place in 2018; membership definitions; safe church, committee structure and how to best account for persons vacating consistory positions prior to the end of their appointed term. We will address other issues as they come up and as time allows.

Policies are often difficult to construct in clear and appropriate ways. We should commend these committee members for moving through these, often sensitive, issues with diligence and commitment to their church. Committee members are Pastor Kathryn, Chair, Ed Brader, Beverly Waibel, Paul Hoppel, Duane Hawk, Marcia Heinick, Lyn Summers, Elise Binder and Shelba Scheffner.

Rev. Kathryn Foster

MUSIC AT JERUSALEM UCC 2019

JUCC’s active music ministry continued throughout 2019. We are blessed with the capacity to hold two Sunday morning services during the months of September through June: the 9:00 Contemporary service with weekly communion, and a Traditional 10:30 service. Based on feedback brought to the Music & Worship Committee, members appreciate the diversity of the worship experience and the ability to choose the ‘format’ and time, which works best for them. God’s House Band provides musical leadership for the 9:00 service, with Bob Fahringer on guitar/vocals, Lynn Mastio-Rice, Kelly Heinick and Pastor Kathryn on vocals, Paul Rice on drums, and myself (and occasionally Pastor Kathryn) on keyboard. Text and lyrics are displayed on the big screens. The 10:30 service features traditional music from our hymnals as well as anthems by our Senior Choir. Paper bulletins are provided, but the big screens are used as well, and provide an enhanced visual worship experience.

From June 16 through September 15, one service/Sunday was held at 9:00 using a blended format of contemporary and traditional music, and led by God’s House Band. We enjoyed outdoor services in our beautiful grove on June 16 (with included a Father’s Day covered dish luncheon), July 14, August 4 (day following our Picnic), and September 8 (last summer service).

Our Senior Choir meets on Tuesday evenings during the non-summer months to rehearse anthems and enjoy the fellowship that singing as a group offers. Choir President/Treasurer Marian Smith retired from the group after more than 50 years of active and dedicated music ministry at Jerusalem. A luncheon was held at Platz’s restaurant to honor Marian for her many years of service. Elise Binder graciously agreed to assume the duties of President/Treasurer.

On occasion, members of our congregation join us for a Family Choir anthem, which is enjoyed by all.

JUCC’s Music & Worship Committee meets regularly to plan services and monitor feedback and trends of music/worship issues. Serving on this committee are Pastor Kathryn, Bob Fahringer, Donna Mackes, Lana Kuehner, Lyn Summers and myself.

A personal thank you goes to those who assist with coverage on Sundays when I am away: Pastor Kathryn, Bob Fahringer, Lisa and Duane Hawk, Kim Williams and Katy Raish. Special thanks to Paul Rice who graciously runs the Clavinova keyboard – so appreciated at this time when keyboard substitutes are hard to find.

In a collaborative ministry led by Rev Ginny Heimer, of St. Peter’s UCC Mantzville, with help from licensed minister, Andrea Lazicki, some choir members continued our monthly visits to The Palmerton, offering services of music and worship to residents there.

We are so blessed to have friends and members who are committed to sharing their time and talents for the glory of God.

JERUSALEM UCC2019 ANNUAL REPORT

The adult class meets in the choir room at 9:00 am every Sunday. Every week someone offers to bring in some baked goods for snack. We start the class catching up on weekly events while enjoying coffee and cake.

This year, before summer break, we finished our almost nine years of reading and discussing the Bible from beginning to end. The book of Revelation was, by far, our hardest book to study.

In September, we decided to read stories about people who have gone to Heaven and were sent back to Earth. We would like to read several stories and compare their experiences before summer break.

We have a solid group of 10 to 12 adults each week and have extra folding chairs available. All are welcome!

Christian Education Annual Report 2019

In the year 2019, we served 21 children in the Sunday/Nursery school programs. Within that 21, 4 children “flew up” from Nursery into Sunday School and 4 sixth grade students moved onto Confirmation Class. As of the end of 2019, we have 14 in the Sunday School Program and 3 enrolled in Nursery.

In September with the start of the new school year, we had a formal presentation of Bibles. We gave them to children who were entering 4th grade and since we had not presented Bibles for quite some time, we gave them to children who were entering 5th and 6th grades as well. We also gave little crosses as kids “flew up” from Nursery into Sunday School.

This year at Sports and Arts Jamboree/VBS we served 24 children: 6 children in the 2-4 year program and 18 in the 5-12 year old program. This year’s theme was Camp Jerusalem- Heroes and Sheroes. We also did a mission and made sensory bags for “Turn To Us” program, which serves children on the Autism Spectrum as well as other people with medical needs. The kids made four tie blankets for Pastor Kathryn to distribute as she deemed appropriate. The camp was held July 15-18 and on July 21st the kids presented a program at the 9:00 am church

service and then we had a family carnival to celebrate a great week. This year we even rented a dunk tank where we sunk the Pharaoh and Goliath.

The Sunday School Program presented “A Star Is Born” at the 10:30 service on December 22nd. All 17 children in Nursery and Sunday School participated.

This year we also purchased new bibles along with a new curriculum. Pastor Kathryn researched and found the Deep Blue Bibles and through further research, we found a curriculum that works with those Bibles. The curriculum is called Loving God, Loving Neighbors and is purchased on a quarterly basis.

On January l, 2019, we started our books with a balance of $36,877.06. At the end of 2019, we have a balance of $32,014.78. Before we get too excited about the fact that the cash amount went down, we usually have our Fall filling fundraiser proceeds in by the end of December, which came in the first Sunday in January, and totaled over $2200.00. With the extra filling we made it took a while to get all of the tins sold and Lana wanted to make sure she had all of her expenses and receipts in before turning over the check.

We completed some maintenance items this year that the Church just covered since we had enough money. We were approximately $22,064 over the income we had budgeted, and $26,900 over the expenses we had budgeted for this year, thus the $4800 difference in our cash at year-end. We completed a lot of maintenance items this year, and also gave some cash away to worthwhile causes. Some of the extra things we contributed to this year included CACPAC, Valor House, Family Promise, and our very own Adopt-A-Family for Christmas Dinner.

Our Building Fund started out with a balance of $585,927.47, and ended the year with a balance of $592,130.26. Considering we spent $46,583.90, I'd say it's pretty good that the balance went up instead of down! We've gained quite a bit in our United Church Funds investment account, and also have seen the gifts given to the Building Fund rise as the progress continues. I'm hoping everyone gets behind the project financially once we start moving forward and see more progress into the Spring.

Our Maintenance Fund started out with a balance of $3,962.14, and ended the year with a balance of $1,791.14. We transferred $3,000 over to the General Fund in September to help pay for the extra tree removal that was done in the Picnic Grove.

If anyone would like to talk with me and go over any of the numbers, please let me know. I'm always available for any questions.

See you in church! - Steph Anderson, Treasurer (610) 597-0405, [email protected]

Message from Andrea Lazicki, Jerusalem UCC member and Licensed Minister within the Penn Northeast Conference

January 2020

Affirmation of ministry is the act whereby a community of faith within the United Church of Christ, such as Phoebe Ministries, recognizes the diverse gifts of its members and celebrates the particular ministry of a person called to serve God and God's people.I’ve been recognized and affirmed in my ministry as a licensed minister in the Penn Northeast Conference (PNEC) for my work of chaplaincy. There was a service for me on the Phoebe Allentown campus on Sunday, September 22nd where I served a number of years as a volunteer chaplain and completed three extended units of clinical pastoral education.

Monday, September 30th there was a service at Phoebe Richland for me where I now serve as a per diem chaplain.

I typically work on Monday and Wednesday each week on the Richland Campus, primarily in the Meadow Glen Personal Care area. I lead an ecumenical worship service on a Monday afternoon. I lead devotional time in the Benner Heller Chapel on a Wednesday morning. Spirit Alive worship (which I led for years in Allentown) continues to be important to me and I assist with those services in the Healthcare Center when needed. I spend a great deal of time listening to stories and visiting with folks.

My faith journey continues with personal time with God and spiritual direction time. Additionally, I attend classroom time with my mentor, Rev. Dr. Allan Kramer–Moyer, as he currently co - leads a Gospel class. I attend various offerings put forth by our PNEC. I’ve attended worship at area churches and I’ve assisted with pastoral care coverage and spoke at a Sunday morning Christians In Action class at St. Matthews Church. I assist with worship at The Palmerton once a month.

As a chaplain I need to be attentive and open to the many and varied pathways people choose to live their lives. As I experience various worship styles I enrich my own faith journey and better understand the journeys of those I serve. Blessings as we move into 2020!

Evangelism and Mission Report for 2019

This year we saw more advances in realizing our vision for JUCC. The visioning that took place in 2017 has helped tremendously in our ability to form the future God has in mind for us. One exciting new ministry provided Christmas Dinner fixings for needy families. They plan to use remaining funds to create another food ministry at JUCC. It will be exciting to see how that rolls out! The new building addition has taken some time with all the permits and plans having to be highly structured, but hopefully will begin soon.

Our main gospel evangelism program consists of our two weekly multimedia worship services, including special themed worship services, great music and weekly Sunday school provided by a group of amazing teachers for a group of wonderful kids! A team of dedicated and knowledgeable individuals manages technology at JUCC. This is important for ministry in that it provides us quality multi-media every week. Another team of dedicated individuals manages our coffee and snack hospitality table each Sunday morning. Many appreciate this ministry! We still offer hearing assistance devices for use during the services.

The confirmands were able to offer their talents to the church by cooking and serving during events; providing a youth service including a kids conversation on juggling; participation in dramatic arts and supplying animals (donkeys!) for our Palm Sunday celebration!

We continued the monthly afternoon Grief and Loss Support Group and ADDED a second monthly Grief and Loss Group during the evening, as well as began a monthly Caregiver Support Group. Both of these groups offer the community around us health and healing, are free of charge and managed by professionals. The groups have welcomed up to 11 persons at a time and average 4-8 per meeting.

We provided two blood drives at JUCC via the Red Cross bloodmobile, two Medicare Seminars and a presentation on Caring for People with Dementia.

In June, we successfully hosted our second, FREE Community Chicken Barbeque Dinner in our church grove, complete with entertainment by our own God’s House Band and deserts by Fifty Five Alive women! What a fun day of giving and sharing!

Pastor Kathryn led a bible study on “Why we believe what we believe” which hosted around 10 persons each week and lasted around 3 months.

Our summer Sports/Arts Jamboree Vacation Bible School included creating educational and emotional support tools for autistic children. We collected backpacks for PVEN needy kids in August; coats, hats and scarfs during Advent; continued our Prayer Shawl ministry; and we

donated the remaining items from our summer Flea Market to Valor and to Eldred Township Thrift Store.

All year we collected for and donated money and food to our local food bank, CACPAC and we supported Family Promise, a ministry providing homeless families a helping hand.

We shared midweek Lenten services and soup with four other local congregations, and collected for UCC special ministries, OCWM, OGHS, Neighbors in Need, Christmas Fund, Strengthen the Church, becoming a Five-For-Five Church of the United Church of Christ!

A group went Christmas caroling to our shut-ins, taking cookies baked by the YRT youth and boxes filled with goodies provided by the congregation, and ended up singing for many more people in those senior care centers. Transportation donated by Leon George Bus Company.

The JUCC Youth group captioned “YRT (Youth Reason Together),” along with growing in membership, welcomed youth in our community to various events and programs they sponsored. CACPAC awarded of our graduating senior students the “Good Samaritan Award” for being highly involved in both church and community betterments. Another small group, the Fifty-Five and Alive group, developed ministries for church and community. We also host a number of Scout troops at JUCC and welcomed an additional Girl Scout troop this year.

We continue to use social media and our website, advertising in local publications as well as flyers, business cards and signage to tell the world about our purpose and ministries. A bus trip, open to the public, to Sight and Sound Theater to see the Annual Christmas Program was great fun.

Our ad hoc Visioning Committee is not meeting, for now, but our “vision” has continued! We look forward to continuing what we have begun as well as adding a more in 2020 including a new ministry to alleviate hunger right here at JUCC! Grove services took place four times this year and residents around the grove can hear us singing our love songs to God and each other. I hope I did not overlook anyone or anything in this report. If I have missed mentioning any group, please forgive me; we do so much! All because we LOVE GOD our NEIGHBORS, and CREATION – 3 Great Loves of the UCC and want to make this world a better place. If you are reading this and you are not part, JOIN in! All Welcome! If you are already part, THANK YOU!

In Christ’s Loving Hands,

Pastor Kathryn Foster
