Boomtown

Sunday, 19 January 2014 FinalHotelier Bree Maddox prepares to host one of Perth's biggest after parties. Following the annual Pride Parade, 3000 people will party on at Bree's Court Hotel. This is the biggest event on Bree's calendar and she prepares for it with military precision.

After the forced closure of her King Street boutique, fashion designer Ruth Tarvydas is on the way up. She has had a surprising offer from closer to home and opens a new store in Claremont, one of the premier shopping precincts. Tarvydas is back.

After a year in Boomtown, we say goodbye to all the high flyers who have shared their stories. BC Iron CEO Mike Young sets his sights on expansion; John Hughes becomes the world's biggest selling Hyundai dealer and Sasha de Bretton embarks on her plan for world domination. Michael Malone celebrates iiNet's 19th birthday and Barry Marshall continues his Nobel engagements, while dreaming of a second Nobel Prize. It has been a year of triumph and celebration, of stepping up to the challenge and surviving. And through it all, Boomtown has been their home.

Stephen Fry: Out There

Monday, 20 January 2014 New SeriesIn Stephen Fry: Out There, Stephen travels across the globe to find out what it means to be gay. Visiting Uganda, America, Russia, Brazil and India, Stephen meets some of the most notorious homophobes on the planet to try to understand the origin of their beliefs; he also encounters victims of homophobic abuse.

The first episode sees Stephen's journey start close to home as he visits Sir Elton John and David Furnish to talk about their experiences coming out, their civil partnership and decision to raise a child together. He also meets a young Iranian man seeking refuge in the UK because he faces the death penalty in his home country for being gay.

Stephen then travels to Uganda - where the government is proposing a new law that would put gay people to death - and meets government ministers and religious leaders who support the bill. He sees the impact this proposed legislation is having on the lives of gay men and women, and has an emotional conversation with Stosh, a young gay woman who was the victim of ‘corrective rape’ by a family friend.

Lastly, Stephen travels to America to explore the workings of Reparative Therapy, a therapy that claims to change people from gay to straight, and visits actor Neil Patrick Harris to talk about his experience of being openly gay in Hollywood.

Kevin McCloud's Beach Hut: Tower Planning

Wednesday, 22 January 2014

Having successfully crafted a small cabin in the woods, in this series Kevin McCloud is creating his own beach hut getaway on the English coast.

Kevin moves his entire shed to the sublime Somerset Jurassic coast. This stunning location brings fresh adventures for him as he transforms his beloved cabin into a beach hut of his dreams.

Kevin uncovers inventive building materials in remarkable places and experiments with novel off-grid energy sources - all so that he can sit out on his porch as the sun goes down, listen to the sound of the crashing waves and sip a cocktail featuring his own home-made rum.

Episode three: Tower Planning: Kevin plans to take his off-grid beach home to a new level with an observation tower three times higher than a double-decker bus. However, when planning restrictions forbid him from building above the height of the cabin, he turns to an ingenious mechanism so his creation can move up and down at the flick of a switch. He also wants to enhance his cooking facilities and make an impressive barbecue by repurposing a Second World War naval mine.

The Moaning Of Life: Vocation & Money

Thursday, 23 January 2014

Karl Pilkington is embarking on more travels around the globe - and this time he's on a journey of self-discovery too. He might be known for having a moan, but the popular An Idiot Abroad star has never really worried about the big stuff. But now he's reached the landmark age of 40, it seems the right time to re-assess where his life is going.

In this funny and entertaining travelogue with a difference, Karl sets out in his own inimitable style to check out other cultures and experience how they face up to life's big issues like happiness, death, careers, marriage and children.

Having never felt he had a career plan, Karl heads for Japan, where an elderly inventor attempts to teach him how to be a genius and he samples work as a traditional odd-job man. He also gets a taste of the high life in South Africa with a flamboyant self-made millionaire, and struts his stuff at a Hollywood fashion show.
