Part d.
When taking a close look at both of the items in Part b and Part c above, it is very clear for
where the best possible site would be for a Tourism Information Center (TIC) in the Southwestern
portion of Raleigh, NC. By taking a close look at the map and 2 mile buffer zones, each of the 7 sites
overlap in some fashion on the map, so taking a close look at that area where all of the sites overlap
would most likely be the best place to locate the TIC. The chart in Part c. reveals that the travel distance
between each of the sites is no more than 5.71 miles and at a minimum of 2.93 miles. Each of the
selected sites is very accessible to one another and each of the sites are frequently visited by both locals
and visitors to the Raleigh Area. The Total Population within the buffered areas is also a figure which is
very beneficial when looking to locate the proper location for the TIC. Each of the areas is heavily
populated with the least populated area, around the PNC Arena and Carter Finley Stadium and the most
highly populated area, around Pullen Park. Along with the Total Population at each of these facilities,
many tourists will also visit each of these areas/attractions to take in the many different activities
affiliated with each area, including the NC State Fairgrounds which will attract approximately 1 million
people from all over the state and other states over a 10 day period in October.
Some of the key lessons that I learned from this assignment were that I continue to be amazed
at the amount of information available to collect data for a given area. The Collector App was very
interesting to use for this project as well. I found it very interesting, once I uploaded the information
from the field and took a picture of a particular site how it pretty much immediately would be added to
my map in Arc GIS online for this assignment. The technology in today’s world is constantly evolving and
this class has certainly opened my eyes to where we are heading in the future.
