Details, Details, Details

Details are very important when it comes to building your robot and programming your robot. Below, give a detailed list how you create a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Measure the distance and record that distance here. _____________What is the pattern? _________________________________________________________________________What do you predict the distance to be for 7 rotations? ___________________________________________

Mathematically, we can predict without even programming the robot based on the circumference of the tire. Measure the diameter of the tire and record it here ________________. Multiply the diameter by 3.14 (π ¿ to find the circumference, record it here, ______. How does this measurement compare to the 1 rotation? ___________________Using math predict the distance for 7 rotations. _______________________________________How does this compare to the distance predicted from the top section? ________________________________Program the robot to go for 7 rotations. Measure the distance and record it here, ________. Which number did it compare the most to, your prediction based on distance or your prediction based on math? Why? ______________

Geometry MindStormsYou can use the robot to create a shape on the floor. The basic shapes that most students know are circle, square and triangle. We will explore these and hopefully work up to more complex

shapes of hexagons and octagons.What are the basics that we know about squares….Number of sides ______, Angle degree measure _______How would the programming look if you were programming the robot to complete a square?_______________________________What are the basics we know about triangles… Number of sides ______, Angle degree measure _______How would the programming look if you were programming the robot to complete a triangle?How would you program a circle? ________________________________________

Detecting Distance

Students will use the ultrasonic sensor to detect distance. Using the Wait Block on programming, students will learn how to avoid obstacles.

On the wait block, tell the robot to stop or change course when it gets close to an obstacle.

How can a loop be incorporated into this?

Exploring Slope Using MindStormsStudents will be given various power levels to explore slope using time and distance. Students will use the power level and record the distance for various time increments.Power Level _______________%Record the distance for each of the times listed.0.5 seconds ________ 1 second ________ 1.5 seconds __________ 2 seconds __________2.5 seconds ________ 3 seconds ________ 3.5 seconds __________ 4 seconds __________4.5 seconds __________ 5 seconds __________

Plot your data on the graph. The time can be plotted on the horizontal axis distance and the distance can be plotted on the vertical axis. (time, distance) You will need to label your axis points.

Converting Time to Speed

If a robot takes 12 seconds to go five rotations and travels 27 inches, then the speed can be calculated as follows:

speed= 27 inches12 seconds

=2.25inches /second

How far does your robot travel in five rotations? ___________ Calculate the speed for each of your average times at each power level.

Power Level % Average Time for rotations Speed (inches/seconds)102030405060708090100

Plot the speed of the robot onto the graph below. Label your axis for inches as well as for the power level.
