Beech Class – Phonics Homework 1 st March 2019 This week we have been doing some phonics assessments in class. Your child may have brought home books of a different reading band but this is to support the learning of certain sounds which may need more work on, for example in phase 5 there a split digraphs such as a-e in words like game and snake or e-e in words like theme and Steve. Developing our phonological knowledge and understanding of vocabulary is extremely important to our progress. In order to thrive, children need an understanding of 50,000 words! To be able to understand a text and ensure reading comprehension you need to be able to understand 95% of what you read. Re-reading is an important strategy to develop understanding. Below are some questions which you can ask to support your child with their reading. On the other side of this sheet are some high frequency words for you to practise reading.
