First READING: 2 Kings 4:8-16 International Children’s BibleIf you prefer, readers can read alternate lines. Alternatively, watch the video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W72gCrRUy-sNote: The reading below tells a shorter part of the story than the video shows. One day Elisha went to Shunem. An important woman lived there. She begged Elisha to stay and eat. So every time Elisha passed by, he stopped there to eat. The woman said to her husband, “I know that Elisha is a holy man of God. He passes by our house all the time. Let’s make a small room on the roof. Let’s put a bed in the room for Elisha. And we can put a table, a chair and a lampstand there. Then when he comes by, he can stay there.”One day Elisha came to the woman’s house. He went to his room and rested. He said to his servant Gehazi, “Call the Shunammite.”When the servant called her, she stood in front of him. Elisha told his servant, “Now say to her, ‘You have gone to all this trouble for us. What can I do

for you? Do you want me to speak to the king or the commander of the army for you?’”The woman answered, “I live among my own people.”Elisha said, “But what can we do for her?”Gehazi answered, “She has no son, and her husband is old.”Then Elisha said, “Call her.” So he called her, and she stood in the doorway. Then Elisha said, “About this time next year, you will hold a son in your arms.”The woman said, “No, master, man of God. Don’t lie to me!”But the woman became pregnant. And she gave birth to a son at that time the next year as Elisha had told her.The Word of the LordALL Thanks be to GodDiscuss: If someone came to your house, would you make them sleep on the roof – why or why not?Why do you think it was a problem for the woman that her husband was old and she had no son?How was the world different when this story was written down? When visitors come to your house, how do you look after them?Do you like having visitors? After a time of talking, allow some time for silent reflection or meditation. PSALM:Let’s join in with this Psalm. I will sing Psalm 89 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcGpyGzx0bQ

GOSPEL: Matthew 10:37-42 International Children’s BibleIf your prefer, readers can read alternate lines.“Whoever loves his father or mother more than he loves me is not worthy to be my follower. Whoever loves his son or daughter more than they love me is not worthy to be my follower.

Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever tries to hold on to their life will lose it. Whoever gives up their life for me will hold on to true life. Whoever accepts you also accepts me. And whoever accepts me also accepts the One who sent me. Whoever meets a prophet and accepts them as a prophet will receive the reward of a prophet. And whoever accepts a good person because that person is good will receive the reward of a good person. Whoever helps one of these little ones because they are my followers will truly get their reward. They will get their reward even if they only gave my follower a cup of cold water”.The Gospel of the LordALL Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ

Discuss: ‘Whoever tries to hold on to their life will lose it.’ What might this mean? And what about, ‘Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.’ (Remember to welcome all answers that are given, no-one needs to feel they got something wrong.)Follow the discussion with silence. Let some words go over and over in your mind.Maybe we could join in with the dancing with this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwipRcJO2E0
