December 2012, January & February 2013 F R O M THE C O MMUN I TY L A Y D I R E CT O R Greetings from the Emmanuel Emmaus Board of Directors. We finished up the 2012 season with 72 men and 86 women attending the Walk to Emmaus. This does not include the 27 Chrysalis Butterflies or the boy’s flight coming in December. What a blessing it has been to serve these pilgrims and butterflies and to watch them grow in Christ even more. We now would ask you to be praying for the boy’s flight in December and the walks that will take place in 2013. Pray for the teams as they prepare their talks and have team meetings to ready themselves to serve the pilgrims. Please be in prayer for the pilgrims that will attend the walks that they will receive a blessing. Pray that we all will step up and sponsor someone for this amazing journey that we call Emmaus. Pray for those serving behind the scenes and we ask you to come and help when you can; one meal, a day, or all weekend. Pray for team selection as they work hard to sort through the names of those serving behind the scenes, that it would be God that builds each team. The spring Lay Directors are working on putting their teams together now, so if you are called please respond back in a timely manner. Please pray for the Board of Director’s for a blessed year in 2013, we have 7 new board members coming on board next year and I know they cherish your prayers. As 2012 comes to an end and we begin 2013 it is my honor to pass the Community Lay Director’s position to Chris Miller and I will go to Past Chair position. What an honor and privilege it has been to serve with the Emmanuel Emmaus Board for the last 5 years. I have worked with some of the most loving and dedicated people in the world, people that love God and the Emmaus movement. I would like to thank those going off the board for your dedication and hard work and for those coming on the board for answering the call to serve this community and may God bless each of you. Thank you for allowing me to serve with you and for you, I love you all. In Christ’s Service, Bobby E. Please remember to pray for the SPRING Walks —

Pray for the Lay Directors: Walk #139 — Willie Bass Walk #140 — Cheryl Waddingham Walk #141 — Bruce Waddingham Walk #142 — Christine Hayes

Pray for the Teams …. Pray for the Pilgrims …. Pray for the Volunteers ….Pray that every aspect of the Spring Walks be in God’s hands!

Prayer Chapel News Prayer is an important part of the Emmaus walks. Not only are the walks bathed in prayer prior to each walk but also during the 72 hour weekend. At the prayer chapel, speakers are prayed over before and after their talks. The team, the pilgrims, and everyone behind the scenes are lifted up in prayer throughout the weekend as well. You are encouraged to take a moment and stop by the prayer chapel during the walk weekends. You can lift up a particular individual, pray over a pilgrim’s cross or even add a prayer to the prayer request list. It is just a great way of giving support to the walk. This past year the prayer chapel has been filled with many new faces as people stop by to visit. It is my hope that if you have not been to the chapel, you will do so in 2013. You will be glad you did!

1. Be sure there is enough Agape for the designated areas you wish to have yourAgape placed:

50 – Dining Room 25 – Bed Agape

2. Mark the bag with your Agape with # of pieces and your Reunion Group Name. It will make it easier for the Support Team and easier to I. D. at closing. You may mark the bag with your suggestion as to when you would request that your Agape be put out, but the final decision will be made by the Support Team to ensure that the Agape is spread out through the weekend and all Agape is given out. (If possible put in clear baggies – for several reasons…. Keeps together/clean/easier to organize for the Support Team).

3. Please pickup your Agape at closing at the end of the Walks for that season (after each walk would be great). The “ A gap e Tot e” will be placed upstairs at closing for your convenience to pickup any leftover Agape.

A ga p e l eft a t t he end o f t he F a l l a nd S p ri n g s Wa lk s wi l l b e g i v en t o C hr y s a l is t o he l p wi t h t heir A ga p e.

The storage issue and our “furry creations” that like to visit us can cause problems and there- fore we don’t want to leave any Agape in the closet during our breaks. Also, you will know how much Agape you have to start off the next season (or next walk). That way you don’t have a lot of extra Agape and could possibly save you some money on making your Agape.

4. Having a clean “A ga p e Tot e” at the beginning of the (each) Walk(s) will make it so much easier on the Support Teams for those Walks. They will not have to sort through the Agape each time and removed damaged Agape. The Support Team can start with new Agape and know exactly how much Agape they have in the very beginning. The Support Team has many duties and having to count and sort Agape and/or clean up what was left from the last Walks is very time consuming - they really don’t have the time. If you have worked on the Support Team you understand and if you have not, please go help out, they are always looking for extra hands.

I know from time to time we will forget or not be able to make closing to pickup, so please contact me (email: [email protected] or phone (704-902-3598) or have someone from your Reunion Group pickup for you.

I hope that these guidelines help to answer any questions you may have about the Agape and the distribution. We thank each of you for your hard work.

DeColores, Mike Sloan

All are welcome to set-up and clean-up for each meal. Those who are not a sponsor or a close relative of a pilgrim may serve during the meal. We especially need help on Fridays because most people have to work. If you are retired or are available at meal times on Friday, your help would be appreciated.

I always trust God - He will provide the help needed. Please remember that serving in the dining hall requires one to serve quietly and anonymously. If we can serve during the weekend and the pilgrims do not remember us, then we have done our jobs to serve with love and without recognition as Christ served.Questions? Please contact Cathy Howell ([email protected])

If you have a CDL license with a passenger endorsement and would like to help drive the pilgrims to & from candle light, please call David Sherrill at 828-234-0783.Your help is needed !!!!

Purpose: The purpose of the Emmanuel Emmaus Outreach Program is to reach out to Churchesthat have not participated in the Emmaus 72 hour weekend. The Emmanuel Emmaus Community (EEC) would present the purpose of Emmaus to churches either in Small Groups or participating in the entire Worship service. It is the wish of the EEC that no one who wishes to attend the EmmausWeekend not be allowed to attend due to financial reasons or lack of sponsorship. The EEC will give scholarships to the first 4 people from a non-participating church. If a church has had a few people to experience the weekend and cannot financially sponsor other members in their church, they can request a scholarship for 2 or more people from the EE Board. Once the church has had the members to attend the weekend, the EEC has the obligation to help organize a reunion group if needed.

Requirements: The only requirement for the scholarship is that the EEC be allowed to present the Emmaus movement to the Church either in Small Groups or as a worship service. The presentation would consist of the showing of a DVD from the Upper Room and life changing testimonies frommembers of the Emmanuel Emmaus Community. The length of the program is close to 30 minutes.

Clergy Support: The Emmanuel Emmaus Community is to support Clergy in the church at alltimes. The EEC community would fill in for the clergy in time of emergency and the need of spiritual retreats. The EEC is here to handle any worship service for the Clergy with personal testimonies from Lay Persons relating to the Emmaus Movement.

If you know of a church and would like the Outreach Mission Program to contact them to set upa presentation, please contact Glenn Fulbright at [email protected] or any member of the EE Community.

EMMAUS DOCTRINAL STATEMENT The Aim of Emmaus is to inspire, challenge, and equip local church members for Christian action – in their homes, churches, workplaces, and communities. This Aim is derived from the belief that we are to be active in our doctrinal position. Our doctrinal position is reflected in our basic Christian affirmations which are: -We confess belief in the triune of God-Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; -We hold faith in the mystery of salvation in and through Jesus Christ; -We belief that Gods’ redemptive love is realized in human life by the activity of the Holy Spirit, both in personal experience and in the community of believers; -We believe we are to be conformed to Christ; -We believe the reign of God is both present and future reality; -We believe the authority of Scripture; -We believe our justification as sinners is by grace through faith; and -We believe the church is in need of continual reformation and renewal

Just a reminder from the Team Selection Committee: The committee’s primary function is to assemble the Conference Room team for each of the Walks. We follow certain policies from the Upper Room in regards to progressive servant hood. Please review the policy below to be considered to serve as a conference room team member:

A Community member has to have worked at least two times within the past three years. After 3 years of not serving behind the scenes your name goes to the bottom of the list and after 3 years it is removed from the Behind the Scenes Worker list. If you haven’t served in the last 3 years, please come and serve behind the scenes and get your name added back to the list.

Areas to serve behind the scenes are: set-up/take-down, kitchen/dining room, prayer chapel, set-up/take-down of candlelight, music, and support. There are sign-up sheets in these areas and it is very important that you sign in so we will have a record of your servant hood.

For a new pilgrim, you have to wait one year and serve behind the scenes at least twice to be eligible to serve on a conference room team. If you are eligible to serve on a team and the newly appointed Lay Director calls you to serve, please return their call in a timely fashion. They are trying to build the team and if you can’t serve, they will need to contact another name. If they can’t get in touch with you, they have no other choice but to move on as they assemble their conference room team.

In addition to these behind the scenes work areas, we have now added Follow-ups as a way to sign up if you help set-up tables and/or take down the room after our Follow-up Service and fellowship time.

Please come and serve in any of these areas during a walk. You will be truly blessed to serve.Team Selection Chair, Chris Miller

Are you musically inclined and enjoy sharing your gift with others? There are always praise and worship opportunities available during our walk weekends —from Saturday night dining room entertainment or Candlelight if you only have a couple of hours to share, to being on the music team for the entire weekend in the conference room. If you can sing but do not have any equipment, we can provide that for you.

“Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord”…..

You will be blessed, even as you bless others !!!
