The theme of a text is a message about life or human nature that the author wants to communicate with the reader. It is written as a complete statement. Avoid first or second person pronouns, as well as commands. Strive for original wording and avoid clichés/overused themes.

HOMEWORK: Theme Writing PromptPrompt: What is the theme of your independent reading book? Why? Use evidence from the text to support your response.
Rubric: 3 points – Claim/Topic Sentence – Introduce a precise, knowledgeable claim that is debatable, defensible, narrow, and specific. Establish the significance of the claim. 3 points – Evidence/Quote – Supply sufficient, relevant evidence from credible sources to fairly and thoroughly develop the claim. Properly blend the quotation. YOU MUST USE PROPER CITATIONS – “Direct Quote from your novel” (Author’s Last Name Page #). 3 points – Reasoning/Analysis – Use valid reasoning to explain how the evidence leads to the claim.
Example:The theme of the book A President’s War by Eric Goszyk is when people feel controlled, they will rebel. When Joanne realizes that the government controls all aspects of her life and she has no voice, she decides to rally those closest to her to begin a revolt. She tells her sister Rachel, “We have to do something bigger than they’d imagine. We have to get control back and stop them from taking over our lives. We have lost everything, including the will to live. We must take our lives back” (Goszyk 58). Joanne is desperate to gain control back; she is a character with talents, opinions, individual thought, and creativity who feels the basic need to express herself and not be controlled by others.
REMEMBER: You may not use the pronouns “you” or “I’ in this response unless it is part of your quote. You must introduce your quotes with an introductory phrase or clause.________________________________________________________________________________________________

Citation Tracker – Focus on Characters and ThemeThe quotes that you gather will help you answer the question:
What is a central theme in the core text? How does the author use characters to develop this theme?
Directions: As you read both the novel Peak (our core text read in class) and your own self-selected novel in the adventure genre, please keep track of important aspects of characterization that might reveal themes in your novel. There are various types of characters including protagonists, antagonists, and supporting characters.
Characterization is the act of creating and describing characters in literature. Characterization includes both descriptions of a character’s physical attributes as well as the character’s personality. The way that characters act, think, and speak also adds to their characterization. There are two subsets of the definition of characterization: direct and indirect characterization.
Use this chart to track citations from our core text and your independent novel to be used in your constructed response. Be sure to list what type of character is being described and to use proper parenthetical citations for each – Ex: “You can never tell who the mountain will allow or not allow” (Smith 133).

Quotation from The Call of the Wild by Jack London related to characterization:
Why is this quotation important? What does it show readers about the book, the characters, potential conflicts, other literary elements, and/or possible themes?
“But Buck was neither house-dog nor kennel-dog. The whole realm was his. He plunged into the swimming tank or went hunting with the Judge’s sons; he escorted Mollie and Alice, the Judge’s daughters, on long twilight or early morning rambles; on wintry nights he lay at the Judge’s feet before the roaring library fire; he carried the Judge’s grandsons on his back, or rolled them in the grass, and guarded their footsteps through wild adventures down to the fountain in the stable yard, and even beyond, where the paddocks were, and the berry patches” (London 2).
This passage reveals that the protagonist is a dog. He is described as being happy and free. He is able to be inside and outside and to roam as he pleases. Later in the novel, readers see that Buck is taken captive by one of the many antagonists along his journey. Buck is meant to be free, so he is unhappy when he is in captivity. The conflict presented by Buck’s captivity helps develop the theme that freedom is an innate characteristic, and it can motivate characters to overcome hardships.
