Peter’s Tunis TripWe left Monastir and went by train to Tunis to see the Bardo museum and the capital city. The Bardo was amazing. It had huge mosaics with an old font. It was like a modern day Jacuzzi but approx 1m deep with steps down in to it and you could even sit in it.

My favourite mosaic was one of a Gladiator fighting a bear. It was a fish face gladiator. There was a spear at the top and bottom and the bear was getting the arm of the gladiator.

Another bear, Mum didn’t take one of my gladiator.

CarthageMost of it was a bit boring because we have seen so many ruins this year, but the bath house was stunning - huge columns and hypocaust. Boy that hypocaust was massive! I thought the baths were big, but when I was told we were walking in the hypocaust, well, I nearly fell over. And when you saw the floor it all supported, well, it was at least a meter thick. They were built by HADRIAN. Yes, that is Hairy Hadrian - or at least he started them. They were finished by Antoninus (145-162ad). So that took them 17 years. Some of the columns had fallen down and we found copper in one because it had green stripes on it.

Some of the decorative stone – see how big they were

Me and J - look at us and then look at the column and you’ll see how big the baths were

Punic harbour

From the top of the hill you could look down on the Punic harbour it was a ring donut shape, with a wide entrance of a rectangular shape where the traders moored. The battle ships were moored in the ring and in the middle was an island with dry docks in it. The Romans destroyed everything, but spared the harbour.
