Storyboard for CPD Door Hardware and Inclusive Design

Introduction – Brief introduction to who, where and what Allegion do!Message – Promote professionalism and emphasise how dedicated we are to providing safety and security in the industry. Highlight key brand Briton and explain origins of Allegion… spin off Ingersoll Rand. Presentation Format – Rolling case study presentation as people come into the room and then slides as opposite when you are ready to start Props / Requirements –Pop up banner in the room and have the case study presentation in the background promoting brands and success stories. Notes – Really need to promote the educational element of what the CPD offers and that this is not a sales pitch etc.

Our Strategic Partnerships– Who are we working in partnership with and why Message – Our partnerships with our Inspec customers allow us to specify, deliver and offer a full local aftersales service to an architect or building contractor, as well as pulling together some of the ancillary products that are required on a hardware schedule or projectPresentation Format – Slides as opposite. These need to be reworked depending on which partner you are taking with you to the CPD. Props / Requirements – NoneNotes – This element is about the expertise of Architectural Ironmongers in the industry and to highlight their role and everyone’s obligations to promote the right safe behaviours.Opportunity for the partner to introduce themselves

Accreditations/Industry Standards –

Overview of our accreditations and standards showing the steps we take to ensure we are compliant and up to date with changes in the industry. Message – As many of our products are lifesaving products it is a legal requirement for many to comply with set standards. Our membership to the DHF and GAI an overarching body that gives guidance and assists in standard setting involved in architectural ironmongery products. Our investment to be accredited emphasises why Allegion are a trusted company to engage with. Presentation Format – Slide as shownProps / Requirements – Fire Door Checklist handout. Article A. Notes – This element is about the responsibilities we have in the industry to provide CE marked products and raising awareness of the obligations we have to promote the right safe behaviours.

Contents – Learning Aims Message – Understand with regards to building regulations how Part M and BS8300 affect specifiers and end users. Issues and solutions in architectural hardware specification. Understanding hardware life cycle and the cost implications to the client. Presentation Format – Slide as shown Props / Requirements – NoneNotes –Highlight how the building regulations can affect them as specifiers, us as manufacturers and their customers as end users in complying with Equality Act requirements.

Part M and BS8300/The Conflict – Key issues and effect the regulations have on architectural ironmongery Message –The biggest issue for us as a door closer manufacturer is that when the original Part M was published in 2004, it caused a massive problem for us because of a conflict between standards and publications that were in place at that time. Also real world factors that may adversely affect the actual opening force. Presentation Format –Visual representation of the force required to safely open and close doors as per the standards and why we nor any other door closer manufacturers could design door closers that could cope with both the closing forces required for the EN1154 and also the opening forces for Part M. Props / Requirements – Show them a force gauge allowing them to see how to measure the forces on doors. Article B. Notes – No matter how good a certain door control is perceived, the energy required to open a door is always going to be more than the returned closing force. Real world factors need to be accounted for as well.

Solutions- Part M and BS8300 – Solutions to meet the requirements of Approved Part M.Message – Depending on the requirements and scenario we will talk about the various different options available Presentation Format –Slides as opposite. Whilst talking through each type of closer option try to paint a picture in their head of an application in the real world… what went right or what was wrong. Props / Requirements – Hands on with ‘model’ samples for architects to experience the effectiveness of closers. Set up incorrectly adjusted doors and have individuals resolve the issues. Article C.

Notes – This should be a real opportunity for hands on experience and to demonstrate what good looks like. Try to draw out any situations that they may have faced and explain why it may have arisen.

Door Hardware/ Locks – lockcases and the part played by them in accessible buildings.Message –Guidance provided through BS8300 is only a code of practice, but it is expected that the information contained within it is acted upon as best practice in the industry. It is highlighting the importance of inclusive design. Presentation Format –Slides as shown Props / Requirements – A heavily sprung lever compared to an easier to depress lever sample block. Notes – Again an opportunity to stress what good practice looks like and to drop in a few comments about why it is important to Allegion that we consider our product design with the end users ease of use in mind.

Door Hardware/ Door Furniture – Optimum dimensions for door furniture as guided by the standards Message –Guidance provided through BS8300. Lever furniture suitable for easy access and those that are outlawed in terms of accessibility. Presentation Format –Slides as shown Props / Requirements –Examples of lever furniture showing dimensions. This is the ideal time to showcase the 4700 lever options suitcase. Article D. Notes – A good test of whether a lever is suitable is if a user who is not disabled in any way can use the door using their elbows or closed fist to operate the door.

Relative Temperature – Where the tactile quality of ‘contact’ hardware is addressed. To minimise discomfort for all users Message –This section applies to tactile ‘door opening furniture’ and hand railing - principally in external applications. These external applications in particular can trigger Raynaud’s Phenomena Presentation Format –Slide as shown Props / Requirements –Normbau lever and explain the skateboarding scenario Notes – In the case of external doors, it would be hoped that the doors would open automatically anyway so an architects design preferences can be accounted for, and Approved Document M requirements met with at the same timeLight Reflectance Value – Indicates the level of contrast required to be accepted as suitable. Revision to original Approved document M Message – In February 2009 BS8300 amendment, Light Reflectance Value was changed to 15 points difference following research between the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers and Reading UniversityPresentation Format –Slides as shown Props / Requirements –Look around the room and use that as the example Notes – Any good hardware manufacturer and any good door manufacturer should be able to give the Light Reflectance value of their products.

Life Cycle Costs– We will focus on door

Page 6:  · Web viewHighlight key brand Briton and explain origins of Allegion… spin off Ingersoll Rand. Presentation Format – Rolling case study presentation as people come into the

closers due to the high ticket value of the closer compared to other products on the door.Message – In this situation we need to highlight key scenarios and highlight the level of traffic passing through particular doors. Presentation Format –Slides as shown Props / Requirements – Use scenarios e.g. Door closing cycles of a hospital corridor door that was unable to be held open for security reasons, and was opening at 500,000 cycles per year, and you are hoping to design a building with a 20 year life cycle, that would equate to 10,000,000 cycles, refer to the chart to show lifecycle costs Notes – Main takeaway point is that without taking into account damage to associated door hardware, doors and frames, or the labour to replace a closer, spending a little more money on a quality product that is designed to last the lifetime of a building can be well worth the initial outlay

Litigation Costs– Even more of a problem if a door closer fails is the danger to the users.Message – The UK is becoming far more litigious with the growth of “No Win No Fee” legal organisations. What would be the cost of a child losing a finger in a door that slams because the closer has failed?…..Presentation Format –Slide as shown Props / Requirements –Scenario of older lady being knocked over when the fire alarm sounded and door slammed closed too quickly Notes – We would not want to be part of a supply chain that caused that situation, but also in the way the world is now, that same supply chain can become part of a litigation row as to who is at blame

Summary & Close – Winding up of the sessionMessage – The Equality Act, Approved Document M, BS8300 all present challenges and opportunities to pull together the correct specificationPresentation Format – Summary of what’s been covered in the CPD plus chance for any FAQsProps / Requirements – Provide TakeawaysNotes – Again an opportunity to stress for them to seek expert advice for hardware specification. Highlight our specification service and the expertise of our GAI accredited partners and colleagues.
