On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: In the light of the Assumption of Mary, it is easy to pray her Magnificat (Luke 1:46–55) with new meaning.In her glory she proclaims the greatness of the Lord and finds joy in God her saviour. God has done marvels to her and she leads others to recognize God’s holiness. She is the lowly handmaid who deeply reverenced her God and has been raised to the heights. From her position of strength she will help the lowly and the poor find justice on earth, and she will challenge the rich and powerful to distrust wealth and power as a source of happiness. someone!TODAY is the SOLEMNITY of the ASSUMPTION, a traditional day for the BLESSING of HERBS, [and PLANTS]. Reminding us of all God has made, this blessing is associated with Mary. In the Bible she is linked with images such as vine, lavender, cypressand lily. She was seen as a sweet smelling flower because of her virtue, who would bear the blessed fruit, Jesus. We dedicated our Benedict-Newman garden in 2010 on this feast and today after Mass we will bless any herbs, flowering plants to celebrate Mary’s feast. LITURGY of the WORDFirst Reading Apocalypse 11,12 A woman adorned with the sun, standing on the moonThe sanctuary of God in heaven opened, and the ark of the covenant could be seen inside it. Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, adorned with the sun, standing on the moon, and with the twelve stars on her head for a crown. She was pregnant, and in labour, crying aloud in the pangs of childbirth. Then a second sign appeared in the sky, a huge red dragon which had seven heads and ten horns, and each of the seven heads crowned with a coronet. A PRAYER FOR LEBANON from CafodGod of refuge, hear our prayer as we hold the people of Beirut in our hearts at this time. Fill us with compassion and move us to reach out in love. In your mercy, bring comfort to those who mourn, healing to those who are injured, shelter to those who are homeless, sustenance to those who hunger. Give strength to those who are working to rebuild shattered lives, and protect those who are vulnerable especially in a time of coronavirus. THANKS AGAIN to the maintenance team – our papal flag is flying again, centre steps and bollards are painted and all sorts of other things done. The hanging baskets and the grounds are being kept in fine shape and being looked after well. In thesde dark times these are really important as a sign of our true hope.MY DAY BY DAY will be back in October. We have ordered 12 copies.
