Dear reader,

in this week’s EC Newsletter, you will once again discover stories of learning from nature. Providing that it works for the intended applications, it is a great discovery, that the skin of bamboo shoots may serve as antibacterial material. Though, let’s not start an opinion poll among pandas what they think of human beings exploiting the bears’ lunch for scientific use.

While it is great to find beneficial features of natural materials, nature is also involved when we have to check the performance of the applied coating in real conditions outside the laboratory. Quite frequently however, we want to accelerate these testing procedures and rely on artificial tests instead. Currently, you can for examples learn more about the results of studies of impedance models and water transport behaviours of epoxy coating at hydrostatic pressure of seawater, where high pressure helped to accelerate diffusion rates of seawater into epoxy coatings.

Ten years ago, ASTM formed a Task Group to answer a simple question: which accelerated test method correlates best with real-time weathering for highly durable coil coatings? Now, a decade later, the results are available and the answer is clear.

Enjoy reading this week’s European Coatings News!

LAST CALLEuropean Coatings SEMINARS23 - 25 April 2013, Frankfurt/Germany

Book your flight to Frankfurt/Germany, arrive at the airport and learn all about:

Basics of wood coatings

Analysing paints and coatings

Chemistry and physics of automotive coatings

Epoxy resin coatings

Maximizing TiO2-efficiency without compromising performance?

Register for 2 seminars and save 15% of the seminar fees

Experts share their views on packaging and can coatings

Speakers of the European Coatings Conference "Packaging and can coatings” reveal what they consider the most important challenge in this field of application.  more

Behaviour of epoxy coating at hydrostatic pressure of seawater studied

New study investigates EIS characteristic of epoxy coating in simulated deep-sea environment. High pressure of seawater accelerated the coating physical failure, and chemical structures of the coating did not change during the experiment.  more

Dispersants to deliver brightness and brilliance

New dispersing agents for waterborne pigments offer high pigment loading, enabling bright and brilliant architectural coatings.  more

Bamboo shoot skin may serve as antibacterial material

Extracts of bamboo shoot skins as well as its active compounds in the skins are potentially useful as antibacterial materials, a new study suggests.  more

Real-time exterior durability test results compared to accelerated weathering

ASTM International and National Coil Coatings Association have released a joint study on highly durable coil coatings.  more

PPG to acquire aerospace coatings producer Deft

Deft supplies structural primers and military topcoats to the North American aviation industry and also has smaller architectural and industrial coatings businesses.  more

Silanes: Dow Corning appoints BCD Chemie as master distributor

Dow Corning has recently appointed BCD Chemie GmbH in Hamburg, Germany, as the master distributor for silanes in Europe sold under the "Xiameter” brand.  more

Wacker expands its Technical Centre in Brazil

The expansion was made necessary by the region’s strong economic growth, particularly in the field of construction, paint and coating applications.  more

Münzing invests in wax technology

Additive producer Münzing will shift the water- and solventbased wax dispersions production of its subsidiary Münzing Liquid Technologies from Rottweil to the company headquarters in Heilbronn, Germany by 2014.  more

Silva Timber Products to distribute Sansin's wood finishes in UK

The Sansin Corporation recently announced that Silva Timber Products has become a United Kingdom (UK) distributor of its exterior "Enviro Stain” wood finishes for siding and decks, as well as the "Purity” interior line and microfine colorant system.  more

Sustainable Development: Help define terms!

The recent European Coatings Show in Nürnberg provided a golden opportunity for the Coatings and Allied Industries to present the very best they can offer to the world. The results were impressive overall. However, there is still a long way to go as far as Sustainable Development is concerned where, in terms of school ratings, I gave the industries an average of a B-, despite some occasional star contributions. more
