Summative Assessment

Subject: Globalization Teachers: Mr. Ronan & Mr. ShireDate task given: 26/10/2015 Due Date: 13/11/2015

Mode of Assessment: Presentation on your chosen topic of GlobalizationDestination for completed assessment: Google Drive folder

Assessment: Criterion A Knowing and Understanding (/8 marks) Criterion B Investigating (/8 marks) Criterion C Communicating (/8 marks) Criterion D Thinking Critically (/8 marks)

Individual or Group work?: This summative assessment will require individuals to work in groups of 3/4. Tasks must be split up fairly with evidence that each individual in the group has contributed towards each facet of the presentation in which different criteria are assessed.

So everyone in the group must equally share the presentation duties. Even though you will be working in a group, assessment levels will be awarded on an individual basis. The teacher will be continually checking in on your group process to see the allocation of work. Your group should turn in a brief summary (one paragraph per person) of the work done by each person. This task is the responsibility of informal group leader to collate the information.

Break-down of tasks for assessment

Criteria TasksA: Knowing and Understanding Presentation –content and conceptsB: Investigating Research question, Action Plan, quality of

Research instruments & results and evaluation of research process

C: Communicating Presentation structure, verbal communication and bibliography

D: Thinking Critically Presentation (structure and communication) and OPVL

PURPOSE OF THE TASK:This investigation helps students understand the differing views of globalization, which is one of the objectives for this unit. It gives students the chance to research a real life topic in which they are interested, investigate the issues around this topic and think critically about the implications of both the research process and findings. The following Criteria will be assessed:

1

Page 2: mrpronan.weebly.commrpronan.weebly.com/uploads/3/7/8/3/37835975/summative... · Web viewInvestment flows and its effect on some aspect of the Hong Kong economy such as the stock market

DESCRIPTION OF THE TASK:In groups of three or four, you will choose and research one aspect of globalization that interests you and present your results to the class using Google Slides.

Possible Topics 1. How globalisation has affected the Hong Kong movie industry 2. Investment flows and its effect on some aspect of the Hong Kong economy such as

the stock market or housing industry3. Social media and its effect on culture/politics within Hong Kong 4. The globalisation of tastes and the issues this brings in terms of waste management

in Hong Kong5. The influence of American multinationals (Apple; Nike; Starbucks; McDonalds) or

other foreign multinationals on the economy/culture of Hong Kong – should only choose one particular MNC

6. Globalisation of transportation networks and its effect on tourism in Hong Kong7. How global fashion trends influence retail purchases within Hong Kong8. The globalisation of technology & entertainment and its effect on the types of

leisure pursuits undertaken by people in Hong Kong 9. The globalisation of the private education sector in Hong Kong 10.How the global music industry has affected music preference within Hong Kong

society

POINTS TO HELP YOU STRUCTURE YOUR RESEARCH

You should follow the guiding questions below to help you choose the topic and structure your research:

What question are you going to ask and answer in regards to globalization? What information do you need in order to answer the question? How will you find the relevant primary (to be generated by your group) and

secondary (pre-existing) information? What methods will you use to collect secondary information and primary

information (survey, interview, observation, experiment, measurement, data collection and oral history) to answer your question?

Do sources have conflicting information concerning your question? How does each source allow you to answer your question? What conclusions do you come to after analyzing and interpreting the information? What conclusions might others come to?

In your presentation you should have a summary of your research, an explanation of your method of collecting information, and the answer to your research question based on your research, and a properly cited bibliography of your sources.

TASKS TO UNDERTAKE SEQUENTIALLY

1. Watch the Keynote presentation – Globalization Presentation Overview 2. Determination of research question.3. Plan of Investigation: find at least five sources (two of these sources must be books)

and evaluate them according to the OPVL format (Origin, Purpose, Value and Limitations). Access the documents on the Weebly regarding OPVL

4. Undertake primary research – sources that you generate through use of a research instrument such as an interview, survey or observation. Write a summary that displays evidence of collecting and recording information primary research.

5. Construct your presentation (you can use the suggested format below) 6. Practice Presentations and submit your work according to the Checklist (see my

Weebly)7. Give presentations to class – 10 minutes maximum

SUGGESTED FORMAT OF YOUR PRESENTATIONSlide 1: Topic and research question

Slides 2-3: Overview of the topic

Slide 4-5: Explanation of your fieldwork

Slide 6: Results of the research

Slide 7-8: Differing perspectives on the topic

Slide 9-11: Answer to your research question

(b): Action Plan The action plan should follow this format:Date Activity Timescale Modifications26/10/2015 Determination of

research question1 day

27/10/2015 Collection and collation of secondary sources

1 day

28/10/2015 Analysis of secondary sources using OPVL structure

You need to specify all activities you will undertake in your assessment task. Thus the first activities will deal with secondary information collection, collation and analysis. Then you will plan and write your essay.

(C): Investigation Process

Here are some questions you need to think about before you begin your investigation:

What do you need to do to answer this question? How could you break down this question into smaller more manageable

chunks/segments Where do you need to look specifically to find the information? How will your record this information (photocopies, a table, certain headings)? What five sources will you consider? How will you plan and construct this presentation (Mind-map; brainstorming;

introduction first or introduction last)? How will you record your sources (footnotes or in-text referencing; bibliography;

software to assist you)?

(d): Evaluation of the Research Process

Evaluation means that you have reflected on the research process and product. Secondly, you provide insightful and creative areas for improvement.

To evaluate your work you should keep a process journal. As you progress through the research process, you should seek to answer the following questions:

Step 1: Question Is the completed product exactly what you were assigned to do? Did you do adequate preliminary research on your topic? Did you formulate a compelling question?

Step 2: Gather Did you use sources in a variety of formats? Did you ask a professional for assistance in finding information? Did you use carefully selected keywords to search for your information? Did you evaluate the credibility and purpose of your resources? Did you use a reliable system to record your information?

Step 3: Conclude Did you adequately answer your original question or prove your

hypothesis? Did you support your thesis with authoritative sources? Did you build on your understanding of the subject? What new information did you learn or create about your topic?

Step 4: Communicate Has your work been carefully reviewed and edited? Is your work complete? Is it neat? Does it include a Title (page, slide or clip) and a Works Cited or

Bibliography page? Are your sources credited in the proper format?

Criterion D Thinking Critically

Part of Criterion D will be assessed by evaluating the quality of your source analysis. In Individuals & Societies, source analysis is undertaken through means of an OPVL (Origin; Purpose, Value and Limitation).

There are two documents on my weebly to help you construct the OPVLs:

1. Source evaluation form IB History – this explains the four themed structure of an OPVL

2. OPVL Handout – it provides you with examples of how to evaluate different sources such as internet articles, statistics and interviews

You will need to construct OPVLs on a maximum of five sources preferably from different forms of media.

Criteria

Criterion A Knowing and Understanding

Step 5: Evaluate Would you be proud for anyone to view your work? Which of the previous steps did you do best? What have you learned from this process? How can you improve next time?
