Red Ribbon Week

By: Kaitlin Norman and Kylee Novosel

Would you like to hear about our Red Ribbon week! We have Red Ribbon week to remember that doing drugs is no good. We celebrate each day by dressing

crazy. On Monday we walked into our classroom with crazy people that had crazy hair. Second, we said wow because so many people had crazy hair! Next, the person that had the craziest hair would win five Mrs. Swigert Dollars. Ethan won first place and got five Swigert Dollars. Ethan’s hair was piggy tails and it was a little painful for him to have them in. Kylee and Kaitlin came in second place and won four dollars. Kaitlin and Kylee had wild pony tails and buns. Mrs. Swigert thought all the kid’s hair was amazingly crazy.

Tuesday was mix match day. It was the craziest mix match of the year. Madelyn had seven different things that were mix matched. Madelyn was mix matched from head to toe. Now Madelyn came in first place and got five dollars and then once again Kylee and Kaitlin came in second place and got four dollars. How amazing! Mrs. Swigert thought all the kids did really good at mix matching their clothes.

Wednesday was hat day. It was so fun because we got to wear strange hats that we are not able to wear to school normally. Our friend Sam wore a tamie hat. It was hot pink and light pink. She liked wearing her hat and said it was fun wearing her hat. Everybody who wore a hat got two dollars from Mrs. Swigert. No one came in first place or second place. Mrs. Swigert wore a hat too, it was black. Kaitlin’s hat was very dark pink, the other side was flowery. Kylee’s hat was plain black.

Thursday was Jersey Day. Jersey Day was so fun because we saw lots of cool jerseys that we liked. Mrs. Swigert, our teacher, wore a Steelers jersey. It was black and gold. Kaitlin wore an x-large and it was almost as big as her. During Jersey Day a lot of people wore jerseys. Some of the jerseys we saw were Steelers, Eagles, and Phillies.

Friday was Lower Dauphin Day. LD day is a day when all the kids wore LD clothes. Our friend Paulimar wore a light blue and a white top. It was cool and she said there was no word on the top. Kylee wore a East Hanover cheerleading top. There were LD t-shirts, May Day Dash t-shirts, and Mrs. Swigert wore an LD t- shirt too. Kylee and Kaitlin thought LD day was fun.

We also had the walk- a- thon on Friday too. We ran laps to help raise money for our school. Kaitlin and Kylee ran seven laps, it was so tiring. Our friend Zack ran 10 laps. We also got yogurt and water and also got 30 extra min of recess. How awesome!

We hope you enjoyed hearing about Red Ribbon Week!

East Hanover’s 4BsBy: Morgan Mosco

There is a new and wonderful thing at East Hanover! “They are the 3b’s!” said Mighty Moe. But they are actually the 4b’s! The 4b’s are the thrilling four rules of East Hanover. They are: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be Honest. You can Be Respectful by raising your hand to speak. If you complete your homework on time, you are Being Responsible. To Be Safe, you can sit in your seat safely. Telling the truth is a way you can Be Honest. Samantha Bonawitz said, “It inspires me! And it makes me think about actions.” I think Samantha Bonawitz is correct because now I think about my actions, too! If you get caught doing one of the 4b’s by one of the teachers, you get a bookmark and your name on the announcements. Paulimar Coll quoted, “It was a good idea!” Lisveth Estrada agrees and said, “They were very good rules!” Kade Schaffer said,” It makes people not be bad.” The 4B’s make East

Hanover be Honest, Safe, Respectful, and Responsible.

Special 4B FollowersBy: Mrs. Swigert

I am so impressed with the 4Bs that I see represented in my classroom every day. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize a few students for “beeeeeing” great!

Be ResponsibleSamantha Bonawitz, Lisveth Estrada, Morgan Mosco, and Ethan Westerberg show their responsibility by being the only 4 who have never missed a homework assignment during the 1st

marking period! Way to go!!!

Be RespectfulKade Schaffer is always polite and says please and thank you!

Morgan Mosco and Kylee Novosel always do extra jobs around the classroom.

Be HonestAustin Rudy showed his honesty by returning a wallet he found on the bus to the bus driver.

Marking Period Report CardBy: Samantha Bonawitz and Paulimar

Coll

Grade 4

Mrs. Swigert, the teacher of room 204, thinks report cards are stressful and hard work, though she is usually impressed with the results.

Report cards get handed out at the end of every marking period. To get a good report card you must work hard and study all year. Then you do tests. All marking period Mrs. Swigert will grade the tests. After that, she puts your grades on your report card to take home for your parents to see.

Did you know that East Hanover students get their report cards at the end

of every marking period? You can get an A+ to an F in math, science, and social studies. You can also get a plus, minus, and check in reading and writing. You also get

advanced, proficient, or below proficient in these subjects.

Maddy H. thinks her report card will be good, but she is a little nervous. Then we interviewed Nick G., when he gets good grades his parents are very happy.

Mrs. Swigert does the report cards, so you can see how you are doing in 4th grade.

The Amazing Instruments

Fourth grade students play instruments here at East Hanover. Mikey, Hailey, Lisveth, Nathan, Kylee, and Nick all play instruments in Mrs. Swigert`s class. It all started a month ago The Amazing Instruments Continued: in the music room. We got to see the instruments that we would be able to play.

The next day we got to hold and try out the instruments we would want to play. Miss Meyer gave us a list of instruments we could play. Miss Meyer gave us time to figure out what instrument we would want to play. Lessons started near the end of September and are going on all year long. These are interviews we had with people in our class about their instruments.

Nick told us that he plays the trumpet and his dad

recommended it. He likes its sound and he wants to play a military song on his trumpet. We also interviewed Andrew. He plays the drums because he likes hitting

playing Dead Man Hanging. Finally, we interviewed Kylee. She said that she plays the violin. She said that she plays it because it has a very beautiful sound. She wants to play Hot Cross Buns on it.

Instruments help you to have a talent and get you around more music. We perform a concert for grown-ups and kids entertainment at the end of the year. Come to our school and listen to the beautiful sound of music!

Mrs. Swigert’s Class is creating new inventions for all to see. They are making new inventions to help people in any way or to create something that they really wish they had. Students must make a model or diagram of their invention. The model does not have to work, but should look like the actual invention. A diagram is a detailed drawing of the invention. The slogan must get someone interested in buying their new product. It can be a commercial, jingle, saying, or a symbol. Finally, students will present their invention to the class and explain how it works. This all takes place in room 204 at East Hanover Elementary on Friday, November 4!

I spoke with Andrew Harnsberger about his progress on his invention. He is making a new camera invention and sadly his first model fell apart. Andrew said that this project excites him. He already has a good start on the project,

with help from Mom and Dad. He doesn’t know if he can get the project done in time because of the trouble he is having with his model.

The new ideas will be displayed in the hallway after November 4. The students will vote to acknowledge some classmates with special awards. Mrs. Swigert gave the project to her students so they could have some fun and be creative! She hopes they work hard and looks forward to their presentations.

How We Roll By: Chase Lee Lower Grade 4

Everyone rolls with the schedule we have. First, we either have reading or spelling. Later, we have writing and reading groups. At 11:11, we have lunch and lunch recess, if it is not wet or icy outside. We then have rocket math and actual math class. Next, we fill in our assignment books and go outside for recess. Next, we also have special activities it may be gym, library, health, music, computer, or art class. Then we have Science or Social Studies. After that, we have the dismissal. The schedule makes us learn in the way we do.

Early yesterday, I interviewed classmates Scott Allen, Austin Rudy, and Nathan Patterson. Scott Allen thinks the way our schedule is, is okay! He thinks it is okay because it’s all split up in different sections. He thinks it should go, “Lunch, Recess, Math, Science, Special Activity, and Reading.” he said. Now let’s interview Nathan. He loves the schedule the way that it is. He loves it because Reading goes by until lunchtime. If he could change it, he said, “Reading, Lunch, Recess, Science, Math, and Special Activity.” Now let’s interview the last classmate, Austin Rudy! He kind of likes it. “There could be not that many subjects in the early morning. There should be a longer lunch recess, one hour extra science, more regular recess, and less reading class.” That’s what the classmates think about the schedule.

Come visit us and see how we roll with our schedule!

Mrs. Swigert’s Class is Full of Science Fans

By: Nathan Patterson, Brett

Zimmerman, and Austin Rudy (NBA)

We are learning about magnetism and how the force is attracting and repelling. We learned that magnetism only attracts to iron and steel. Magnets lose their force when they are separated from each other. The magnet induces the iron or steel and it

becomes a temporary magnet. We learned this in the first marking period at East Hanover Elementary School in room 204, Mrs. Swigert’s room. Science class has lots of group work and experiments.

Yesterday we asked Andrew Harnsberger a few questions about science class. “What’s your favorite science experiment?” said Nate. Andrew responded “The scale, the magnets, the washers, and the chips.” Scott Allen responded for his favorite experiment and it was measuring the magnetic force. Then we walked to Nick to ask him his favorite experiment and he responded, “Finding the magnets.”

After that we walked to Kade to ask him questions about is opinion on science on a scale 1 to 10. He responded that he rated science a 9. I asked Maddy why she does not like science. She said she does not like it because it gets a little boring to her. Science is used for most construction and it helps people in this world. It also cures sickness. Science is fun for most kids.

Sunny Money

By: Kade Schaffer

You are reading the Sunny Money Section. Do you know who hands out Swigert Money? Mrs. Swigert hands out Swigert Money. You can get Swigert Money by doing station work. Another way you can get Swigert Money is by doing your work. You can lose Swigert Money too. If you have a

messy desk, say goodbye to your money. Another way you can lose Swigert Money is if you don’t act good. You can also lose Swigert Money if you do your spelling homework on another piece of paper, you lose one dollar. Another way you can lose Swigert Money is if you don’t put your chair up at the end of the day. You can earn Swigert Money in room 204 at East Hanover Elementary School. Mrs. Swigert hands out Swigert Money because she wants to be nice and to teach students to be responsible.

I interviewed Zach Landis and asked him, “How much Swigert money do you have?” He said, “134.90”. I asked him do you feel proud you have so much Swigert Money? He said, “Yes.” Another question I asked him was, “Did you steal that money?” He said, “No”. The last question I asked him was, “Did you borrow that money?” He said, “Yes a fifth grader named Ryan Gurst.”

You can spend Swigert Money in Mrs. Swigert’s classroom. The store is only open on Fridays at 3:30. I really hope you enjoy earning Swigert Money. I’m going to work to get Swigert Money.

The DeckersBy: Zachary Landis and Ethan Westerberg

Beware of the deckers. We play football on Saturday mornings and week nights at Memorial Field. We play to deck people and win. You wear shorts, t-shirts, and long socks. You play a football game and you either win or lose. In flag football you wear flags. Then you go to the guy who has the football, pull his flag, and he is down. In tackle football, you wear pads and tackle the person with the football, and he is down.

Here are some interviews with flag and tackle football players. First, we asked Nathan Patterson, and Brett Zimmerman about tackle football. They both like defense better than offense. They said their record is 3-3. Then we interviewed Ethan Westerberg and Zachary Landis about flag football. Ethan likes offense better than defense. Zachary likes defense better than offense. They said their record was 3-5. All of their wins were in overtime. The deckers are on the move!

TAEKWONDO TAKES A KICK

Do you like to punch stuff? Then taekwondo is your sport! Taekwondo is a martial art of self defense. In taekwondo, we manly learn kicks.

Normally, we start with a lot of warm-ups. Then, we do our kicks. Then we split into three groups and we usually do hapkido and forms.

We have two students who do taekwondo. First, Andrew interviewed Scott Allen. Scott said he was a blue belt. Next, Andrew asked him what studio he goes to. He said he went the Harrisburg Institute of Taekwondo. His favorite thing is sparing. Andrew said, “Do you do any other sports? Scott answered “Yes, I do fencing.”

Now Scott will interview a high green belt, Andrew Harnsberger. Scott asked, “Do you do any other sports?” Andrew said, “Yes, soccer.” Finally Scott asked him what studio he goes for practice. Andrew said, “Kim’s Studio.”

People join taekwondo

to have fun. The origin comes from Korea. Hope you join taekwondo soon!

Student’s That Are FlexibleBy Cate Randazzo and Hailey Sleva

Kids in our class are flexible because of gymnastics. People in our class that do gymnastics are Kaitlin, Hailey, Cate, Madlyn, Austin, Nick, and Scott. Gymnastics is made up of flexibility, special moves, and lots of practice. Gymnastics is a sport that you have to compete in. You have to do cartwheels, flips, and all kinds of moves. We learn our moves by our coach and put them into shows and competitions. We practice at the Hershey Gymnastics Center at 6’o clock on Thursday nights.

We asked several kids about Gymnastics. We asked Madlyn Hoke and Kaitlin Norman. Both girls answered that they are flexible.

Hailey Sleva also does gymnastics. Hailey Sleva is flexible like the other people that do gymnastics. Her favorite part about gymnastics is doing cartwheels on the balance beam. People do gymnastics because they want to learn how to be flexible and learn all the moves. Come and do gymnastics with me and learn special moves!

Spooky Halloween Of 2011Do you love any kind of candy?

Well if you do, go trick or treating on October 31st to get a lot of goodies!

We did some amazing interviews with some people. The first person we interviewed was Kylee Novosel. Kylee Novosel dressed up as a Phillies Baseball player. Kylee said, “I’m going trick or treating with my dad. I love Halloween because you get so much candy!”

The other person we interviewed was Ethan Westerburg. He dressed up as a Phillies fan. His parents pass out delicious candy.

Halloween is a fun holiday to dress up, ring doorbells, and say trick or treat to get candy. If you love a good scare, candy, and dressing up, Halloween is for you! Halloween is a spiritual celebration. Halloween is to have fun, seeing interesting costumes, and getting lots candy!

The Book Report

A Review of The Civil War on Sunday by Mary Pope Osbourn

By: Nicholas John Giampetro

This week’s book is an exciting one. The book is about when Jack and Annie go back to the Civil War. This book takes place some time during Civil War times. When they’re there they go to a Union Hospital camp and volunteer for nurses. Then they find Clara Barton, who is known as the “Angel of the Battle Fields.” They go and attend to the wounded soldiers on the field. Jack learns that wars aren’t cool.

The last time I read this book was about a month ago. I chose this book because I like to learn about wars. I talked with all my classmates about this book. Many of them had interesting comments about it. “I like it because it’s history,” said Andrew Harnsberger. “It’s just too boring,” Paulimar Coll states.

I’d give this book 4 and a half stars out of 5 stars because 2 of the people I spoke with did not like it. This is a book I recommend for you!
