ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES
The aim of this module is to provide the learner with an introduction to CAD and to enable them to produce engineering drawings to given industry standards. The unit will provide the necessary foundation to study CAD at a higher level.
The purpose of this Module is to provide a framework in which the learner will:
Be able to start up and close down hardware and software in order to perform CAD activities.
Be able to set up an electronic folder for the storage and retrieval of information.
Be able to store and retrieve engineering drawings for printing/plotting.
ASSIGNMENT INTRODUCTION Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) is now used extensively throughout the engineering industry as a means of communicating drawing data to required standards. Two- and three-dimensional representations of components can be drawn and modified allowing the sharing of data from designer to customer. CAD data can be shared with CNC machines and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software, which may then assist in improving productivity, flexibility and quality of the final product.
During this assignment you will produce a range of Orthographic engineering drawings that will make up the majority of the evidence for the assignment so it is important that you print these and keep them in your folder of evidence.
You are going to use computer-aided design to produce to number of engineering drawings in Orthographic views, you will then be asked to carry out modifications to these drawings and re issue those following procedures similar to those found in an Engineering workplace.

Task 1
In doing task 1 you will show that you are able to,
Start up a CAD system, produce and save a standard drawing template and close down CAD hardware and software in the approved manner(Pass P1)
Produce a CAD drawing using orthographic projection methods
(Pass P2)
Use CAD commands to modify a given orthographic and isometric drawing
(Pass P5 in part)
store, retrieve and print/plot seven CAD-generated or modified drawings.
(Pass P8 in part)
a. You are required to produce a standard drawing template that meets the required BS standards. This should be saved into your area and used each time you produce a drawing during this module.
b. You are required to complete the Orthographic drawing assessment exercise given to you by your tutor in which you will produce & modify drawings for at least 3 components / projects.
DISTINCTION (D2)
In order to achieve the distinction criteria for this module you must agree a realistic timescale with your teacher in which you will complete the tutorial exercises and complete the drawings to standard independently
In meeting this agreed timescale you will achieve the following criteria,
Demonstrate an ability to produce detailed and accurate drawings within agreed timescales independently.
(Dist D2 part)
Your teacher will provide you with an observation record as evidence for your folder if the agreed timescales and standards have been met.

Task 2
In doing task 2, you will be able to show that you are able to:
Set up an electronic folder for the storage and retrieval of information
(Pass P7)
You are required to produce screen shots showing your working area once you have set up folders where you are going to save your work.
Remember that it is important to give these files and folders appropriate names, in doing so you will be able to show that you are able to:
EXAMPLE SCREEN SHOT OF FOLDER AREA SHOWING FOLDERS AND FILES WITH APPROPRIATE NAMES

Task 3
In doing task 3, you will be able to show that you are able to:
Describe the drawing commands used across the range of drawing types
(Merit M2 in part)
Appendix A shows an Orthographic drawing of the Gauge Plate project. A number of features have been identified and numbered. For each, you are to describe the drawing commands and methods used to create the feature, an example has been given.

A – Radius corner. To achieve a radius corner the ‘fillet’ tool should be used. This can be found by, selecting and holding the ‘Arcs’ icon in the drawing toolbar. Select the fillet icon. Type the radius needed in the pop up box, then using the hand icon, select the two lines to be filleted, the fillet or radius will be automatically applied to the value entered

HOW WILL THE ASSIGNMENT BE ASSESSED
Your report should be presented in an appropriate format in order that it can be read by both your assessor and any others, who may wish to read your work,
• The assignment should be either word processed or written neatly on A4 paper
• The front cover sheet attached to this brief must be included with the following information, student name, date, unit and assessment number.
• Correct use of spelling and grammar.
• Clear and legible writing or font/font size.
• Clear indication of the tasks being completed.
• Appropriate text and web based sources should be used to research your assignment.
Your work must be your own. Any websites or books used to obtain information must be referenced in a bibliography at the end of your assignment.
It is important that your assignment is handed in on or before the ‘hand in date’ stated on the front cover sheet. Late assignments will only be assessed if the reasons for the lateness have been discussed with both yourself and the assessor. Any work handed in after the hand in date without prior agreement with the assessor will not be assessed.
