One of the main themes from the text is earning about radiation and the class have formed lots of prior knowledge through viewing documentaries on Chernobyl and Fukashema, and also using visual art forms to convey their knowledge.

The students have already been using these themes to further develop understanding about different modes and media and the impact of these on the viewer or listener. They have designed artwork in posters on radiation, and also creating shelters for survival of radiation or similar event.

Copies of song lyrics – “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons x 23Ipad and Ipad speaker to play the song.Interactive whiteboard to set up you tube video containing song lyrics on the screen.PensWhiteboard to show examples and definitions of figurative language.

Catering for diversity

I am not aware of any diversity in the Year 8 class, but will check with my mentor teacher to ensure I am prepared. I am aware that an education assistant is usually with this class.

Lesson Evaluation:(Reflect on the lesson. What worked? What did not work? What would you change? Why?)

What worked:

The song choice for the students was right on par with their interests in music and they all knew the song and said what a ‘cool’ song it was on introducing it. When I played the song, all of them sang the lyrics as well, and then I had to replay the song and ask them to not sing and listen to the lyrics and its meanings. The choice of lyrics wasn’t too beyond them; they all developed some kind of meanings and comprehension of the song.An introduction about me was listened to and then an introduction into the topic, with use of some metaphor phrases amused the students. They all didn’t know what figurative language was at the start of the lesson when I asked them. The examples of metaphors were used as a minor behaviour management tool also, by using some students names, for example “Ted thinks he is the class clown”, and “Kay is a walking dictionary” I think doing this early on made the students aware I knew their name and also possibly their intent to be attention seeking. The worksheets I handed out assisted them in with understanding the meanings of metaphors. The lyrics I

had printed out ready to hand out for the students to circle metaphors and make meaning of the song.I had some great discussion with the students about the meanings of the song and letting them know initially there was no right or wrong answer was a good move, as I then had more hands up to interact with.By the end of the lesson I felt all students had a good understanding on what a metaphor was.The YouTube video I played the students loved, and sang along to each song whilst I explained the metaphors in each.Having a sense of humour helped build a good rapport with the students at this age.

What did not work:

My speaker – initially did not work as planned, and I changed to using the interactive whiteboard which whilst I was getting it started the speaker decided to work again. The students saw humour in this situation and then asked questions about the speaker and technology was discussed briefly.

What would I change:

I forgot to collect the completed song lyrics from the students at the end of the lesson, and had an opportunity to do so after the following lesson.

I would not change anything else from this lesson, I loved teaching it, and felt all students engaged and participated extremely well.

NOTES for during lesson / prompts

Introduction

Did you all know that the world is your oyster…

Does anyone know what I mean when I say this?

Because the world is not literally an oyster? Is it? Your world is precious, special, and valuable, and i mean that it is yours because of your position or advantages, the world is laid out before you like a plate of oysters needing only to be pried open to be enjoyed, perhaps with a pearl as a prize you are young and learning, and you can do anything you want to with your life…I say this to you as an example of using figurative language.

Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. When a writer uses literal language, he or she is simply stating the facts as they are.It is found all around us… in movies, books, and music….

Today we take a short look on one type of figurative language used the metaphor. Does anyone know what a metaphor is?

A metaphor is a comparison between two things, it suggests that two things are the same. Does not use the words like or as. It is a figure of speech in which a word or a phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.

For example..

……………. Ate so much ice cream at recess he is going to explode.. Your teacher is an angel… Its raining cats and dogs….Jordan is a walking dictionary… Kayla is a shining star…Regan thinks he is the class clown… This year 8 class is all brains…

These are uses of figurative language not literal meanings… you don’t its doesn’t really rain cats and dogs? Mrs lyons is lovely but does she look like an actual angel with wings?

Can anyone else give me an example of a metaphor?

So metaphors are used everyday all around us… in many different forms. I love music… whats everyones favourite songs atm? Metaphors are found in many song lyrics if you listen hard enough… For example… baby you’re a firework…. Whose song is this from? Means everyone has a special spark in them..

In keeping with your radiation theme and the book you have been reading I have a copy of song lyrics here for you all to first listen to; Radioactive by Imagine Dragons… hand out lyrics.First I want to ask you these questions to listen to whilst the song plays…

Page 10: mrsnottlesnotes.weebly.com · Web viewLearning objectives: On completion of this lesson, students will be able to: Understand what figurative language is and possibly give an example

What does radioactive mean? The song title? Radioactive: emitting or reacting to the emission of ionizing radiation or its particles. Producing or having a powerful and dangerous form of energy.

What do you think the song is about? Is there more than one meaning?Possibly a literal and a figurative meaning? (Metaphorically)

Whilst the song plays I want you to listen to what the song actually means…

After song talk about its meanings?

Give 5 minutes to read lyrics and underline metaphors and any other definitions and meanings there is no right or wrong answers as its using your own imagination to define what this song says to you…

…after 5 minutes…

Right can you please tell me what you had…. Hand papers in to me… ?Use examples to go line by line through the song together…
