This week we met Chunky Monkey, who helps us look for small words or chunks inside of a word we don’t know. I am so proud of all the reading going on in class and at home!! Thank you for reading with your child and signing the reading log Next week we will talk about “making connections” while we read. This helps us to understand what we read (comprehension). We will discuss “text-text, text- to-self, text-to-real world and text-to-media connections. PHONICS This week we learned about Iggy the Iguana that lives in an igloo. The students loved the stories as they practice the short “I” sound. WRITING This week we danced, skipped, laughed, twirled, and hopped while studying “verbs”. READINGWe are continuing to work on Reading Strategies. We will discuss “text-text, text-to-self, text-to-real world and text-to-media connections.

PHONICSThis week we learned about Iggy the Iguana that lives in an igloo. The students loved the stories as they practice the short “I” sound.

WRITINGThis week we danced, skipped, laughed, twirled, and hopped while studying “verbs”. We wrote about the setting in Where the Wild Things Are as well as wrote some story problems in math As I begin formally teaching the formation of all the lower case letters I will be checking that the students are practicing these in all their writing. We also continue to write in our sharing journal, writing I will share at the fall conference.

MATHThis week the students have been practicing joining or “adding” 2 numbers together. They are using math vocabulary to explain their thinking (part, part, whole, equal, and sum). I introduced the way I want the students to solve word problems GO FISH. F-Find the important information, I-Illustrate the problem, S-Solve it with a number sentence and H-tell HOW you solved it. Look in their Thursday folders this week for our word problem packet.

SCIENCEThis week we did a great experiment with wind. The students tested 4 different objects to see which one traveled the farthest in the wind. Ask your student which one did and why We have been talking about the 4 seasons; why they happen, what they are and how they affect us. Next week we will also explore the phases of the moon and our marvelous sun!

SOCIAL STUDIES7 Habits!!! This week: Begin with The End in Mind. Lots of conversations about goal setting!!! Next week #3 Put First Things First.
