MARCH 2020 MASTER BOARD MESSAGE The Island Park village homeowners showed up in style for the Homeowners Annual meeting. We needed a quorum of the 211 homeowners to hold the meeting, and we got it. This year there was a ballot issue at the meeting for the homeowners to decide on. Proxies were collected and the votes were tallied. The Master Board of Directors recommended that homeowners vote in favor of the waiver on the proxy. The issue was that we were entitled to waive the State requirement to prepare the complied financial statements for the cost of $1,500. This was not an audit, which is different. Instead we would have Pegasus prepare a report of our cash receipts and expenditures for the State. The votes were counted and the wavier was passed. We will have this waiver issue to vote on by proxy again next year. Thank you for taking the time to come to the meeting, voting or returning your proxy and also collecting proxies from those who could not attend. On another note, I give special thanks for all those who volunteered and worked the two Saturdays in February. Coming together and volunteering to work on projects around IPV not only saves the community money but also brings a sense of pride by working together to make IPV a better place. The Communication Committee is pleased to offer a series of educational workshops throughout the month of March. We invite and encourage all residents to attend these free workshops in our own clubhouse. It is a great opportunity for us. You are welcome to bring a friend. Monday March 2 at 1 pm – Closing Up and Shutting Down. Steve Abbot of the IPV Vision Committee will share hints on how to prepare your home before you head north or away for the summer. Learn the risk factors, symptoms, early detection and prevention of these five women-related cancers. It may save your life!Tuesday March 24 at 11 am – Frauds and Scams. Heather Turco of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Community Response Unit, will present a workshop on how to spot a scammer or fraudster and what to do if you become a victim. Ariel Hoover of Climate Reality Leadership Corps, Lee County Chapter, Climate Reality, will present a workshop on how climate change affects all of US – our economy, lifestyle and even local wildlife. WHERE CRAFT BECOMES ART

Page 3: €¦  · Web viewMaybe not so with Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. In this month’s Pages in Paradise book club selection, readers are asked to imagine being held hostage for months

In a unique Craft Club event, gourd artist Joe Barker shared his expertise by demonstrating and preparing gourds for crafters to embellish.

On day 2 of the February craft event, gourd decorators came to the clubhouse to make beautiful artworks.

PARTY TIME: IPV SPRING FLING

In high season, finding a place to experience live music in a casual environment can be difficult. Problem solved: A locally popular one-man band is scheduled to play at the clubhouse on Saturday March 28 from 6 to 9 PM. Chucky from Kentucky is his name, and his musical repertoire is huge.Admission is $5, payable at the door, to cover the musician’s fee. Light snacks will be provided by the Social Club. Bring your own drinks. The clubhouse sunroom will become a dance floor, so dust off your moves.

DRAINAGE PROJECT UPDATESubmitted by Rick Roudebush

The Surface Water Restoration Committee reports that the Drainage Project is moving along on schedule. Restoration of the Zone 2 drainage area in Sections I and IV was completed January 24th. Review and evaluation of Zone 3 in Sections II and V-2 will be done this fall, with work planned for approximately the same time next year. The Drainage Committee is aware that these areas are beginning to regrow invasive plants. This was expected. The committee will be working with the Master Board to address these areas on an orderly basis as soon as possible. Residents are welcome to keep the area behind their units cleared of invasive plants. However, unauthorized planting in the cleared areas and drainage basins is prohibited.

TALKING TRASHIPV residents can help reduce landfills by separating plain old garbage from recyclable items. Put into the recycling bin: Paper – not soiled, shredded, metallic or waxed. Metal – cans, aluminum foil and disposable foil pans. Cardboard – any box without a waxed coating. Plastic – containers labeled #1 - #7; no bags, no Styrofoam. Glass – clear, green or brown bottles and jars.

ART & WINE AFTERNOONSubmitted by Alice Forsyth-Bowley

Need a little culture? No need to battle the snowbird traffic – IPV is holding its own mini art show. On Sunday March 15 from 3 to 5 PM, eight IPV artists – Dave Bovio, Marilyn Rennie, Joe Barker, Sherri Kirda, Martha Stover, Alice & Barb Forsyth-Bowley, and Mary Ellen Donohue – will be displaying their talents at the IPV clubhouse. Our artists’ talents include painting, stained glass, bonsai, lapidary & beaded jewelry, quilting, gourd art and driftwood air plant displays. Some displayed items will be for sale. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon: Sip a glass of wine and admire the talent of your neighbors, on display right here in our own community. Tell your neighbors and friends; we hope to see you for our first IPV art show.

A GOOD WALK, SPOILEDThat’s what they say about golf. But mini golf is different. About 50 IPV residents enjoyed an afternoon putting around on Thursday February 24. And though there was only one big winner, there were no losers. Big kudos to organizer John Donohue.

Dave Anderson [left], with the winning low score of 40, led his team to victory in the IPV mini golf outing on February 22. These fabulous green berets were among the prizes, along with the fine trophy held by Diane Avis’s daughter.BEL CANTO: JUST A PRETTY VOICE?

Literary novels often are scorned. So many pretty phrases, so little reader

enjoyment. Maybe not so with Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. In this month’s Pages in Paradise book club selection, readers are asked to imagine being held hostage for months in a South American embassy among diplomats, an opera singer and a cadre of terrorists. Winner of the 2002 Pen/Faulkner Award, this novel won both fans and pans. And this means that the Thursday March 12 meeting at 6:30 will foment lively discussion from both camps. All are invited, if only for the disagreements.

PARTY, PARTY, PARTY

Section I may be the smallest of the IPV sections, but almost all turned out for their annual block party on February 18.

Smallest to largest: here’s how IPV sections line up:I, V-1, II, IV, V-2 and the Goliath: III.

IPV VOLUNTEER MORNINGOn two mornings in February, resident volunteers turned out to clean and stain

the clubhouse decks, paint the pool perimeter curbs, re-screw errant deck planks and retouch street signs.

This photo was taken after a morning of power washing and painting. And still, they smiled. IPV volunteers are reliably cheerful. Left to right are Steve Abbott, Jim Farrior, Laura Poirier, Donna and Dave Anderson, and Vivian Persad.

Ralph Noble doesn’t wait for a volunteer assignment. He picks up his paintbrush and touches up the unique street signage all around the village.

MARCH CRAFT CLUB:STAINED GLASS

Submitted by Alice Forsyth-Bowley

Our project this month will be “A Stained Glass Fish” and our class instructor will be Mary Ellen Donohue. The fee of $10 per person will cover the cost of materials. Mary Ellen is limiting the number of people to 12 for this class, which is scheduled for Wednesday March 11, 6:30 to 9:30 PM.We know our projects are becoming popular because there seem to be more and more people wanting to participate. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the clubhouse bulletin board the first of each month. If you don’t sign up before it’s full you will not get in. Please don’t call the artist instructors and beg them to “just take one more.” We can always ask the artist to do another class next year if there is enough interest. The artists set the number of people per class so that each person gets adequate attention to complete the project.

CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE NEWSSubmitted by Connie Barker

On Thursday February 6 our clubhouse committee met to organize and clean the clubhouse kitchen. We found we had an overload of silverware and utensils. We also discovered many donated items for which we have limited space. We are asking our residents that before anything is brought into the kitchen [or taken out], to please check with our clubhouse committee. This will eliminate duplicates of items. It will also keep clutter off the countertops and inside the cabinets. Please consider donating your items to a charity of your choice. Thanks for your cooperation.

Section III’s Eileen Lesser was feted for her birthday by relatives who arrived from Ohio, along with her neighbor Ron Blum. The February 27 venue was Miceli’s in Matlacha, and Eileen’s age now ends in zero. Congratulations to one of IPV’s longest residents.

Monday March 16 at noonLadies Lunch Out - Gloria’s La Trattoria, Café NapoliOne of my favorite restaurants has been calling me to return. It is hidden away in the Villa’s Plaza and is a gem that serves some of the best salads, sandwiches and “tapas” in the area.
