Genetic Disorder Research ProjectBackground: In this unit, you have learned about the structure and function of DNA, genes and chromosomes, simple patterns of inheritance and applications for biotechnology (and the associated ethical issues). Now it is your time to bring together what you know and research a genetic disease. You will have a choice of both your partner and genetic disease you research. Provide your findings and show your knowledge using a poster or pamphlet. If you would like to use another medium for your presentation please see your teacher.

Content: Address these questions about your chosen genetic disorder on your presentation.

Definition and name of the disorder. What happens to the body? What part of the body does it generally affect? Does it have any common names?

Description of the symptoms. List all of the possible effects on the body. Cause of the disorder? How do you acquire the disease? Is it a mutation? A genetic tendency triggered by other factors? How the disorder is inherited? Is it sex-linked? Autosomal? Dominant? Recessive? Is there a particular chromosome it is located on? How the disorder is treated? Medications? Gene therapy? How the disorder is diagnosed? What tests are done? Is genetic counselling an option? How common is the disorder? Is there a particular group of people who are more likely to have the disorder? Men? Women? Children?

Elderly? Ethic/cultural group? Nationality? What is the current status of research on this disorder? Why is this disease of interest to you? Why did you pick this disease to research?
