Unit 7: Graphic Design ApplicationsPhotoshop Lesson 5: Retouching Photographs

In this lesson, you will learn about some tools available in Photoshop that can help take away those imperfections that the camera sometimes captures – things like pimples, shiny areas on your face, stray hairs, etc. In this lesson you will use the following new tools:

Spot Healing Brush Tool – This tool paints with sampled pixels from an image and matches the texture, lighting, transparency, and shading of the sampled pixels to quickly remove blemishes and other imperfections in areas of a photo.

Red Eye Tool – This tool removes red eye in flash photos of people or animals, and white or green reflections in flash photos of animals.

Clone Stamp Tool – This tool paints one part of an image over another part of an image. This is useful for duplicating objects or removing a defect in an image.

Removing Blemishes from a Photo:1. Open Adobe Photoshop and open the Face.jpg photo located in the Templates drive in Photoshop

Lessons/Lesson 5.

This picture was taken from a website that advertises acne products. Notice that the girl in the photo has a few blemishes on her face.

Before you begin, you will create a new layer where all of the retouching techniques will be placed.

Removing the Red Eye Effect from a Photo:When using flash photography, the flash from the camera can cause a “red eye” effect in humans and animals. For this reason, these photographs must be retouched to remove the effect from the eyes.

1. In Photoshop open the Red Eye.jpg photo located in the Templates drive in Photoshop Lessons/Lesson 4.

There is obviously a problem with red eye in this photograph.

2. Click and hold the Spot Healing Brush tool until you see the Red Eye tool . Select the Red

Eye tool .

3. With your mouse, click in the red area in one of the eyes. The red area will be darkened to remove the red effect.

4. Click the red area in the other eye so that the red effect will be removed from both eyes.

Removing an Unwanted Area of a Photo:

1. In Photoshop, open the House.jpg photo located in the Templates drive in Photoshop Lessons/Lesson 4.

Notice that there is a crate in the front yard that takes away from the picture. You will use the Clone Stamp tool to “remove” it from the image.

2. Click the Clone Stamp tool on the Tools Palette. This tool will allow you to sample the pixels from another part of the image to copy to a new area of an image.

First you will have to specify the area that you want to clone. The area to the right of the crate in the yard would work because the lighting is very similar.

3. To sample the area, press and hold the Alt key on your keyboard (your mouse pointer will become a target symbol) and click on an area to the right of the crate. (Look where the target is on the following photo.)

4. Release the Alt button and use your mouse to rub the crate.

5. Continue rubbing the crate until it is completely erased. (You actually aren’t erasing. You are copying the image from where you sampled to the area where the crate is in the image.)

6. Save this image as NoCrate.jpg (JPEG, not PSD) in the Graphic Design folder in your H drive.

ON YOUR OWN:Find either a photo of yourself or a photo of someone on the Internet and use these retouching techniques on the image. (You can give yourself a third eye using the Clone Stamp Tool!) Be sure to save your work in the Graphic Design folder on your H drive. Save the file as OnYourOwnL5_XX.
