Soroptimist Scene The newsletter of Soroptimist International of Tampa April 2017
President’s Message
Did you know that the month of April is National Women’s Health Care month? Did you know that just walking or being active for 30 minutes a day can do wonders for your heart, mind and body? So…LET”S GET MOVING!
1Corinthians 6:19-20 states, Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
As we honor God by honoring our temples, there are four numbers about our health that we should know:
1) Blood Sugar Level, Normal for person without diabetes: 70–99 mg/dl
2) Blood Pressure, Normal is a top number between 90 and 120 with a bottom number between 60 and 80
3) Cholesterol Levels; Total Cholesterol Below 200 mg/DL is ideal
4) BMI (Body Mass Index), determined by your particular age, weight and height
Knowing these numbers can help to prevent such illnesses as heart disease and diabetes. Be sure to check with your doctor about specific normal ranges for you. Small changes in our diets can go a long way in helping us to build healthy eating habits as well as manage stress.
Replace a candy bar with a handful of almonds or pistachios
Replace sugary drinks with water. If you’re like me and need a little flavor with your water, add a few slices of grapefruit, oranges, lemon or strawberries.
Substitute rice with cauliflower rice or quinoa

April Activities
We will forgo a regular monthly meeting in April as we have a full calendar of events planned. One of our biggest fundraisers of the year is the Spring Plant Sale with set up on Friday, April 7 at 10:00 am and the plant sale at the USF Botanical Gardens on April 8-9. Can you help with the plant set-up on Friday? Can you come to the Botanical Gardens and sell plants for two hours on Saturday or Sunday? We need at least two members at our booth at all times: one as cashier to handle the sales and another to assist customers. Saturday morning is always our busiest time. Here’s our sign-up sheet so far:

2017 Awards Luncheon
We had a lovely room at the Rusty Pelican Restaurant to celebrate our award winners.

SI Tampa presented three Live Your Dream Awards, the Violet Richardson Award, and the Soroptimist Ruby Award for Women Helping Women.
President Rosetta reminded us that we are all diamonds!
Ilayna Hughes inspired us with a dance interpretation
Carlimerys Tossas is seeking a degree in nursing. Carli’s favorite quote is “You're going to feel like quitting. You're going to struggle. You'll have days where you'll wonder, what's it all for? You'll have days when people attempt to break you down or challenge your intelligence, skills, and the right to be where you are. You'll have moments when you question your own abilities, and perhaps your sanity- but you will rise. You'll rise because your strength as a nurse is not determined by one job, one grade, one shift. It’s an ongoing journey of learning honor, humility and a chance to make even the smallest difference in the lives of your patients.”
LYD award winner Juliette Lowe is seeking a degree in Mass Communications. Her

favorite quote is: "Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything."
Jerrika Filides could not attend the luncheon, but she meet with our Live Your Dream committee chair Lorraine Lundy to receive her award. Jerrika is working toward a degree in nursing. Her favorite quote is: “Take pride in how far you have come, and take faith in how far you will go.”
Ruby Award winner Chrissy Dorion was nominated by Jeanette Garcia (left).
Vicki Salin-Decker (left) presented the Violet Richardson Award to Savannah Kummelman with our donation going to the YMCA of Lakeland First Tee Program.
Our life members Helen Madden and Ruth Mulholland made this a special occasion with their presence.

We had many family groups including three generations of Soroptimists.
Isn’t it amazing what a small group of dedicated women can accomplish!
Our thanks go to all the committees who selected the award recipients, to board members who planned the luncheon, to all the members who helped with fundraisers over the past year, and to everyone who
attended and cheered on our winners. And we sincerely thank our corporate sponsors including two recent sponsors: Silver Sponsor Dr. Todd Cielo and Platinum Sponsor Brisk Coffee Roasters USA. Our corporate sponsors contributed a total of $2,100. That’s super!
Excerpt from a Message on International Women’s Day from Soroptimist International President Yvonne Simpson
A quote that is often attributed to Mahatma Gandhi “Be the change you want to see in the world” challenges us to take personal responsibility. When we stop blaming, justifying, complaining, denying, wishing, visualizing, dreaming… and instead reflect on our own role and then take responsibility, we step up. We take action. We have control over ourselves – so let’s use that power to lead by example.
We can transform ourselves. We can move to be motivated for the welfare and well-being of others. We can transform our world and accomplish the Soroptimist Mission: Soroptimists transform the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment and enabling opportunities.
