Campfire Safety

Stay campfire safe! 70% of campfire burns are caused by embers rather than flames. Keep children a safe distance with a “circle of safety” at least three feet from the fire edge. For more Campfire Safety Tips, visit http://ameriburn.org/prevention/burn-awareness-week/#NBAW2018

Fireworks Safety

Leave the show to the pros! Sparklers can reach 2000 degrees F, hotter than a blow torch. Never allow children to handle fireworks. Consider safer alternatives, such as glow sticks, confetti poppers or colored streamers. For more Fireworks Safety Tips, visit http://ameriburn.org/prevention/burn-awareness-week/ #NBAW2018

Leave the show to the pros! Thousands of fireworks injuries are treated in US hospital emergency rooms, often leaving permanent damage to the eyes, hands and face. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public, professional display! For more Fireworks Safety Tips, visit http://ameriburn.org/prevention/burn-awareness-week/ #NBAW2018

Home Oxygen Safety

Keep all flame sources (candles, stoves, lighters, cigarettes, etc.) away from medical oxygen. Do not allow anyone to smoke in a home where medical oxygen is used. For more tips on Home Oxygen Safety visit http://ameriburn.org/prevention/burn-awareness-week/#NBAW2018

Smoking and Home Oxygen are a deadly combination! Smoking is the leading cause of burns, reported fires and death involving home oxygen. Never smoke while home oxygen is in use. For more tips on Home Oxygen Safety visit http://ameriburn.org/prevention/burn-awareness-week/ #NBAW2018

Kitchen Safety

If a pan of food catches fire, slide a lid over it and turn off the burner. When in doubt, get outside and call the fire department. #NBAW2018

Cooking is the #1 cause of home fires and injuries, caused most often by leaving it unattended. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove. #NBAW2018

Wear short, close-fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking. Loose clothing can dangle onto stove burners and catch fire. #NBAW2018

Youth Fire Misuse Prevention

For more information about youth fire misuse prevention, visit http://ameriburn.org/prevention/burn-awareness-week/ #NBAW2018

Keep matches and lighters high out of the reach and sight of children, in a locked cabinet. For information about youth fire misuse prevention, visit http://ameriburn.org/prevention/burn-awareness-week/ #NBAW2018

Each year, children “playing” with fire causes an average of 56,300 fires, 110 deaths and 880 civilian injuries. For information on preventing youth fire misuse, visit http://ameriburn.org/prevention/burn-awareness-week/ #NBAW2018

About 40% of the fires that kill young children less than 5 years old are started by kids “playing” with fire. For information on preventing youth fire misuse, visit http://ameriburn.org/prevention/burn-awareness-week/#NBAW2018

Other

All heaters need space: Keep things that can burn (paper, bedding, furniture) at least 3 feet away. #NBAW2018

Closely supervise burning candles; keep them out of reach of children and pets who may knock them over; never leave candles burning while sleeping. Use sturdy, safe candleholders. #NBAW2018
