OverviewThis whitepaper describes a case study of a real world implementation of the Microsoft® Lync® Server 2010 Multitenant Pack for Partner Hosting reference architecture. The Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack is a Microsoft unified communications (UC) hosting solution for telecommunications and hosting providers that enables Microsoft hosting partners to deploy a single instance of the Lync Server software to securely and economically host multiple tenants with a rich, fully integrated UC solution.

The Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack has a strong partner ecosystem that provides add-on solutions that will integrate seamlessly through the Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack into hosting partners’ existing UC infrastructure. By using this extensive ecosystem, UC hosting providers can enrich the feature set and value provided to their customers.

We selected partners from the partner ecosystem to build and deploy a real world implementation of the reference architecture as a proof of concept. The goal was to ensure seamless integration with existing hosting partner infrastructure and validate integration with third-party enhancements. The lessons learned by the hosting partners in building this reference architecture and their subsequent best practices have been integrated into the reference architecture design.

For this case study, a group of Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack partners deployed the reference architecture in four datacenters, one in Paris, London, New York, and Seattle. Each deployment is capable of hosting up to 50,000 tenant users, and delivering Lync Server features and capabilities, including integration with Exchange, SharePoint, and additional services such as Lync Mobility, and Video interoperability. This document describes the best practices learned, and a real world BOM for deploying this reference architecture.

About the Microsoft Hosting Partnershttp://www.sipcom.com

SIPCOM was selected to manage the design, construction, and delivery of the Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack reference architecture described in this document. They were tasked with building the Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack infrastructure in the four data centers located in Paris, London, New York, and Seattle with failover for high availability, and then to test them to prove that the reference architecture meets Microsoft’s requirements. The cumulative result of this work is detailed in following sections.

Dependencies, Zones, and Layer DescriptionsThe reference architecture provides the topology for a 50,000 user deployment of the Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack. As seen in the following figure, the Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack reference architecture topology is broken out into three layers:

Core layer: Includes the networking layer components. These core layer components include firewalls, routing, session border controller (SBC), switching, servers, load balancing, storage area network (SAN), and storage systems.

It includes the physical and logical components of the core, application, and add-on layers of the reference architecture. A description of the server types/roles within the architecture is also included.

Physical Topology DescriptionThe physical topology of the Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack reference architecture includes the data center core, data center compute block, and VoIP components, as well as the routing and Layer 3 devices. This physical topology is illustrated in the following figure.

Routing and Layer 3 Devices

The hosting provider, Level 3 Communications, provided the infrastructure used to connect with external sites and with the internet. Data coming from outside the reference architecture enters through the Juniper MX80 router cluster.

Data Path within the Reference Site

Data from the MX80 router cluster then moves to the EX4500 cluster where the data can take one of the following paths:

Path 1: Core systems data is routed to a Juniper SRX1400 firewall system.

Path 2: VOIP communication data is routed to the Acme Packet Net-Net (SBC).

Data Center Compute Block

The compute block is comprised of the Brocade Ethernet and storage fabrics, Brocade application delivery controllers, Dell servers connected through Brocade fabric adaptors, and Dell storage.

The Brocade Ethernet fabric connects and distributes data from the Data Center Core to the Dell servers. Similarly, the Brocade storage fabric connects and distributes data from the Dell servers to Dell storage.

The Brocade application delivery controller connects to the Brocade Ethernet Fabric to load balance the various Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack servers’ roles.

Logical Zone Descriptions

The reference architecture is made up of three logical zones. Each zone represents a natural demarcation between roles and functions within the Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack infrastructure.

Edge zone: This zone is demarked by the MX80 routers and the Juniper SRX firewall systems. Systems in this zone include: External facing DNS, Lync Server Edge pool, SBC, and external facing SMTP.

Proxy zone: Protected by the Edge zone, the proxy zone allows communication systems pools to forward data to the appropriate technology server pools within the core zone. Server pools include: The Exchange Hub Transport servers, the Exchange Client Access Servers (CAS), and Exchange UM servers.

Core zone: The Lync Server UC integration roles are served inside the main firewall, proxy zone and communication network SBC. Server pools in this zone include: Active Directory domain controllers, Exchange Mailbox servers, Lync Server Director, Lync Server conferencing, Lync Server Mediation Server, Lync Server Monitoring Server, Lync Server Front End Server, Lync Server Monitoring Server, SQL Server® database and Lync Server backend SQL database.

Server Descriptions

For a description of the Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack server types and descriptions see the Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack deployment guide at:

http://lync.microsoft.com/en-us/Lync-Online/Pages/Lync-Online.aspx

Infrastructure Cost EstimateThe reference architecture was built to be a baseline. The architecture was designed, and implemented as reference architecture for a 50,000 user multitenant UC solution. Additionally, the architecture was designed to develop best practices for a UC solution that included third party Add-On partners.

This section includes the infrastructure hardware used to build out one of the four original sites. The purpose for including the infrastructure hardware in this document is to give hosting and telecommunications companies a starting point for estimating the costs for building their own UC infrastructure.

How to Use Provided Bill of MaterialsThe purpose of this section is to help hosting partners understand and estimate the cost to build a similar architecture. The 50,000 user reference architecture is a starting point for the reader.

Cost Estimate InstructionsFor a rough estimate of costs for building out the architecture, do the following:

1. By using the lists of hardware in Appendix A, working with vendors, create an estimate of total infrastructure cost (TIC).

Estimate of total infrastructure cost = TIC

This will give the approximate cost for building a 50,000 user infrastructure.

2. Estimate a projected number of users expected to use the system.

9

Page 13: hanytaha.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewSome examples depicted herein are provided for illustration only and are fictitious. No real association or connection is intended or

A Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Multitenant Pack for Partner Hosting Reference Architecture Case Study

Projected number of users = PNU

3. Divide the estimated PNU by 50,000.

PNU / 50,000 = NOC multiplier

4. Multiply the NOC Multiplier by the TIC

NOC Multiplier X TIC = Estimate infrastructure cost (EIC)

The EIC will be the approximate cost to build an UC infrastructure that will support the PNU for the organization.
