MathsThe maths has been split up into three levels of difficulty.

Green for ’go’ meaning that everyone should be able to do these maths questions. Orange for ‘tricky’ meaning that the task is harder and you are still at the stage of

mastering this skill. Red is for ‘challenging’ and when you feel confident and fully understand the skill.

It is up to you as to which maths colour you attempt.Keeping Your Numeracy Skills Sharp.

Choose an easier section first, then challenge yourself by trying a trickier colour. Write out these sums fully and show all of your working. Please do all of the tasks on a separate piece of paper.Traffic light the questions and this will give you an idea of which sections will be at the right level for you. You should have a mix of green and orange questions.

Maths InvestigationNumber Differences

Place the numbers from 1 to 9 in the squares so that the difference (take away) between joined squares is odd. (You must use each of the numbers once.)

Can you find some other ways to do this? Explain how you do this.

Can you put the numbers in the squares so that the difference between joined squares is even?

Explain your answer.

What general statements can you make about odd and even numbers?

Task – Create an informative poster explaining who Fibonacci is, the sequence and how it relates to real life. You could even try drawing the Fibonacci spiral! When out for a walk, look for examples of Fibonacci numbers. I found a primrose with five petals.

TopicI know that plastics pollute our environment.

I understand that plastics are made from oil, which is a fossil fuel. When plastic is being made, greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere and contribute to global warming. I am able to encourage others to think about recycling plastics.https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zvg3cdmhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z7x2tfrLook around your bedroom and make a list of the objects that are made of plastic and decide what you are going to do with them once you no longer need them.

It may seem a big thing to slow climate change, but humans are pretty good at tackling big projects. If we can send a robot to Mars then we can do anything!

What are we doing to slow down global warming? We are using more renewable energy – sun, wind, water and tide to produce electricity instead of fossil fuels. We are recycling a lot of plastic, paper, glass and tins which means we don’t need to produce more and therefore we create less greenhouse gases. We are walking or using our bikes more instead of using cars.We are changing from petrol and diesel run cars to electric forms of transport.People are more aware of switching off lights and electrical items when not being used.Trees are being planted in many parts of the world. On Sept. 22, 2019, an estimated 6 million people around the world joined the global climate strike making it likely the largest climate rally ever. While the protests were led by younger people, the event brought together individuals of every age, every walk of life, across cultures,

11

What can we do? Make a list of the things we can do in school to help reverse climate change.

Task - As part of our contribution towards making Milne’s Primary an Eco school, please create a colourful poster which will encourage pupils in school to do one or more of the following things, which will mean using less fossil fuels and reducing global warming.

recycling saving electricity using transport less and walking/cycling to school buy locally sourced food. plant a wildlife garden at home or in school

12

Page 13: milnesprimary.files.wordpress.com · Web viewSpelling Monday – Look up the meaning of five of your spelling words using a dictionary and write them down.Tuesday- Write two synonyms

Task-

What can you do at home to slow climate change? Make a list of the things you are already doing and another one to say what else you could do.Here are some of the things that we do at home.

Here are examples of what else we could do.

Writing I know how to write a persuasive letter.I understand that I have to explain my points, use flattery and make it personal to my family.I am able to use the success criteria below and include what I have learned about climate change.Write a persuasive letter to your family persuading them to be more energy efficient and to ‘Go Green.’

To be successful- Use a letter format. Explain clearly what you want to happen in paragraph one. Use the next three paragraphs to give particular points as to why and how your

family could become more environmentally friendly. These points should be detailed using explanations, examples and evidence. Include a paragraph making a suggestion as to what a good outcome might be. A last paragraph should summarise the previous paragraphs in two or three lines. Include flattery and a rhetorical question.

Use time connectives e.g. firstly… secondly… 13

Page 14: milnesprimary.files.wordpress.com · Web viewSpelling Monday – Look up the meaning of five of your spelling words using a dictionary and write them down.Tuesday- Write two synonyms

Use persuasive phrases e.g. some believe that…. I am sure …

Points to consider- Explain the purpose of being more environmentally friendly. Say how your family’s actions can have a positive effect on climate change. Give examples of what you and your family can do to make a difference. Say what role each family member could play – For example you could become ‘Chief

of Recycling’ for your household and someone else could be ‘Chief Energy Saver.’ Explain your feelings about climate change and what being more environmentally

friendly means to you.

Before you start, plan what you would like to include in your letter.

Here are some ideas to help-

Sometimes people call ours a "throwaway society." That means that we're a little too willing to throw away old stuff and buy new items. Many times, even if you no longer need something, someone else just might. For instance, if your baby brother outgrows his plastic basketball hoop, why not give it to another family who has a little kid? That's one less plastic basketball set that they need to buy. It's also one less large plastic toy that needs to be produced, packaged, and shipped to the toy store.

Here are some other ways to reuse the things you have:

Take your own bags — preferably reusable ones — when you go to the shops.

Drink tap water instead of buying bottled water. If you don't like how your tap water tastes, a low-cost filtration system could make a difference. Get a reusable water bottle so you can take it with you.

Organize a swap among your friends. What can you swap? Books, toys, even clothes. It's a way for everyone to get something new without spending any money and without throwing them away. You could set aside some items for your swap when you're cleaning your room!

Take paper from your computer printouts and use the other side for more computer printing or just to draw or doodle on.

Turn off lights you're not using them. Better yet, encourage your parents to switch to energy efficient light bulbs.

Turn off the water when you're brushing your teeth.

When you can, walk or ride your bike instead of riding in a car. You'll use less petrol/diesel — and get some exercise!

14

Page 15: milnesprimary.files.wordpress.com · Web viewSpelling Monday – Look up the meaning of five of your spelling words using a dictionary and write them down.Tuesday- Write two synonyms

Unplug the chargers for your phone and MP3 player when you're not using them.

Put your computer to "sleep" instead of leaving it on with the screensaver running.

Recycle It!

Recycling has never been easier. You could become "Chief of Recycling" for your household. That means you'll organize the recyclable items into the correct bins, remember to put them out on recycling day, and help remind others which items can be rinsed and recycled.

By separating plastic bottles, cans, bottles, and more, you're reducing the amount of rubbish that goes to the landfill. What's a landfill? A big mountain of rubbish, where all the bin trucks go to dump their loads. When the rubbish decomposes (breaks down) it emits methane which is a greenhouse gas and this is not good as it contributes towards global warming. Recycled goods go instead to a recycling centre, where they can be crushed, broken down, and later turned into new cans, bottles, and paper.

What else can be recycled? Sometimes water can be. For instance, rain water collected in water butts or bath water can be used for watering the grass and flowers.

Take a look at your own back garden. Is there a spot where you could plant a tree or put in a little fruit or vegetable garden? If so, have fun, get your hands dirt and get planting. Then you can watch with pride as your tree takes root and your garden plants or vegetables, such as tomatoes, grow from sprigs to big plants full of ripe, red tomatoes. Who knew being green could taste so good!
