Find the broom, brushes, washing-up liquid and bin on the opening pages. Read the title. Ask ‘What do you think this story is going to be about? Do you think that Pete is good at looking after the wood? Discuss Pete’s behaviour at first ‘Is it good or bad? Should Pete clear up all the litter in the woods? Why?’

Make a poster asking people to clear up their litter/mess. It could be a poster about keeping your bedroom tidy or it could be about stopping people from dropping litter in the streets around your home or in the park.You could use the Litter Poster activity on Purple Mash to help you.

Tue Story SortRead the book again and try to remember what order things happened in. Try to retell the story to somebody else, you could even act it out with any cuddly toys you have.Can you retell the story with another person taking it in turns to say one sentence at a time?

Use the sheet in the pack ‘Story Sort’. Cut the pictures out and put them in the right order to tell the story. You could write a word or sentence to go with each picture.

Wed SeasonsThe wood Pete lives in looks very different at different times of the year. Look for the changes in the seasons in the book. You might notice the change in colours. What does Pete do in Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring? How does Pete’s wood change in each of the seasons?

Choose a season and draw a picture of Pete’s wood in that season. Label some of the things in your picture that you might see in that season. You could use an adjective and a noun for your label.

Fri Looking after our environmentPete tried to look after his habitat, sometimes he got it right and sometimes he got it wrong. Talk with an adult about the things you could do to help look after the area where you live. Maybe you could go on a litter pick (like Frankie in Year 2) or you could have a bird box in your garden to give the birds somewhere to live. There are lots of different ways we can look after our environment. How many can you think of?

Rainbow Challenges – choose from these lovely activities. Make a habitat for an ant, a worm or a beetle. What sort of things do you think they might

like in their home? Will they be the same as the things you might like in your home? Complete the sheet ‘Sorting animals’, putting the animals in their correct habitat. How many different tree leaves can you find on a walkabout? When you get home see if you

can find out what type of tree they come from. Make a picture only using leaves, you could use the leaves you found on your walkabout. Go on a Mini-beast safari (use the sheet provided) and find all the different places that mini-

beasts can live. Find out about woodland habitats using BBC bitesize and then play the games to see what

habitat? Use an old cereal box to make your ‘woodland habitat in a box’.

Help Pete put the forest back together by adding some leaves on a tree. You choose what

season it will be as your tree will look very different in Autumn than Spring or Summer. Use the finger painting sheet in the pack to help you.

Wednesday Play ‘Guess my Shape’ gameYou need: Shape cards (you could make your own)Look at the shape cards. Choose one but don’t tell your opponent which one. Your opponent needs to guess which card you chose by asking questions which can only be answered with a yes or no. Keep count of how many questions they needed to find out what your shape was. Swap roles. The person who takes fewer questions scores a point. The winner is the first player to score 5 points.

Friday Sticks Challenge:

Find 8 sticks, long sticks and short sticks. Use 3 of them as sides of a shape (only use one stick for each side). Draw the shape you have made. What is it called? How many different types of this shape can you make using your 8 sticks? Draw them all.What about if you used 5 sticks to make a shape?
