SCIENCEWe are going to focus on plants this term. I would like you to plant some seeds this week and water them. You are investigating what seeds need to ‘germinate’. Germinate = start growing. Take some photos of the progress your seeds make Write a seed / bean diary… explain how you have watered them, where you put them and what you have noticed. If you weren’t able to plant any seeds or beans… have a go at completing the life cycle of a bean. (Template is available on the Palm Class Page of the School Website). This week I would like you to ask an adult if you could either pick a flower from your garden or buy some flowers. You are going to investigate the different parts of a plant or flower by dissecting it (taking it apart). Lay the different part of the flower out on a plain piece of paper and label them, you may need to do some research. (There is a template and guidance on the Palm Class Page of the School Website.) I can’t wait to see your findings. Become Nature Detectives. You could either go on a walk with an adult or go around your garden. Find different plants around try to name them. Your task is to identify and name common plants. Use the Great Plant Hunt Identikit, which is available on the Palm Class Page of the School Website. You could record some of your findings by drawing the different plants that you find. You could create a picture with the things that you find. Who fancies an experiment? Follow the instructions on the Science Flower Investigation available on the Palm Class Page of the School Website or complete the plant revision mat, which is also available on the Palm Class Page. Complete the ‘SEEDS ACTIVITY’ available on the Palm Class Page of the School Website.

GEOGRAPHYDesign your own Farm from a satellite view, create a map. (There is a template available on the Palm Class Page of the School Website)Create key and labels for the farm that you designed last week. What are the key features?Explore how the seasons affect life on a farm. Can you identify the four seasons of the year and identify their features? Once you have done that, explore and describe what typically happens on a farm during each of the four season in terms of animal and crop care. You could write this in a little paragraph. Then think about these questions:Do you know what the four seasons of the year are?Can you describe what happens on a farm during each of the seasons? Can you identify differences in weather patterns throughout the year? This week I’d like you to have a look at the seasons and how they affect farmers at different times of the year, you could write a paragraph about the differences and / or similarities.

Create a summer collage using anything you find around the house or outside.

This week I would like you to think about the weather. I would like you to look at the weather conditions, so what it’s like outside the window, and think about what effect this has on your life. Does it stop you going out to play? Does it stop an adult from home going to the shops? Now think about the effect it might have on other people like farmers. I would like you to try to create a Weather Vane. (There are instructions available on the Palm Class Page of the School Website).

RE: Thankfulness – our topic in Palm Class for RE over the Summer Term. This is a perfect time during the challenging world that we’re currently living in to explore this concept. Make a thank you card for a member of our community. This could be a neighbour, a friend who has been kind, a parent who helped you with your learning, the postman, a shop keeper. Remember to tell them in your card what you are thankful for and make your card beautiful. Don’t forget to leave it somewhere for them to find. EG: Mr Postman, Thank you for delivering our mail and for working so hard. Mummy / Daddy, thank you for helping so much with all of my learning. This week marks 75 year since VE Day when we remember the end of the War in Europe. If we were not in lockdown there would be lots of street parties and special things going on around the country to celebrate. We are going to show that we are thankful this week by doing something in our homes to celebrate. This could be something small like drawing a picture to commemorate or making a flag to wave or making a cake to celebrate. There’s no expectation to go overboard but this is such a wonderful occasion to mark. Please send a picture to the email address or post on Twitter how you are celebrating at home and I shall collate them to share with everyone. Further ideas: a tea party at home, make a paper party hat, watch and learn a vintage dance on Youtube, follow a war time recipe or make a paper

spitfire or complete the VE Day Wordsearch or the VE Day Comprehension (Templates on the Palm Class Page of the School Website).Create a Thankful / Grateful Jar - As the world becomes more and more disposable, and with everything available at our fingertips at any time of the day, we can sometimes miss the simple things that we should be thankful for. Find yourself a clean empty jar, decorate it and attach a label – create your own label or use one from the sheet provided. Place the jar somewhere in your house where it can be seen. Take a moment each day or week to write down something that you are grateful/thankful for on the blank cards or spare pieces of paper (make sure you add the date) and place it in the jar. On a date that you choose, such as one year from when you started, open the jar and read through all of your gratefulness notes. It might surprise you that sometimes it is the simplest of things that can make you smile. (There is a template and further instructions on the Palm Class Page of the School Website). It would be great to see your jars and read some of the things you are grateful for so you could tag @ClassPalm on Twitter or email the homework address. Take a little time to do some thinking… Write about or draw the things that are good in your life, things or people that make you happy and that you are thankful for. What have you learnt about ‘Thankfulness’ so far? Make a note of all of these different things in your book.Put on some relaxing music in the background and then try some gratitude yoga. (Template and instructions are available on the Palm Class Page on the School Website)MAKE A FATHER’S DAY CARD FOR YOUR DAD OR GRANDAD OR STEPDAD.Go on a thankfulness walk, have a look around at the beautiful surroundings of our natural world and our environment. What are you grateful for?Watch HRH The Duchess of Cambridge’s Assembly on Spreading Kindness. https://t.co/qdhxpgZKFH?amp=1 Now I would like you to carry out some Acts of Kindness this week. You could: leave a secret note for someone at home to make them smile, do some chores at home (tidy your room), if you have one – pay attention to your pet and give them some extra love this week. I would like you to be grateful this week for being who you are, so draw or paint a portrait of yourself and then put your strengths around the outside. Be proud of who you are because I’m proud of you!Find a stone or a pebble in your garden. Then paint a rainbow, cloud and the word hope onto it.
