Dear Friends of St Georges,

As warm summer days are nearly here we have our ‘Stupendous Summer Fayre’ to look forward to, or have had if you bought your magazine late. The frenzy of activity that fills many young people’s lives comes to a crescendo as exams are finished, essays and dissertations are written and handed in and sports tournaments are lost or won. Parents fret, tempers are fraught and the promise of long sunny days of the holiday season still seem some time away.

For some of us those days are long past and for some of you new parents, you and your children still have that experience to go through. Today there is so much pressure to do well; at school, at work, even in our leisure activities. To be the fastest, the brightest, the best. But by whose standards? Who decides who is the fastest or brightest? Obviously, there has to be some tests of ability, some marker of achievement, otherwise we wouldn’t try; we wouldn’t feel the pride of achievement and the world would be a poorer place for those who lack the particular abilities, or those whose abilities are far superior to the rest. However, the pressure can be immense and sometimes we need to look beyond being the best, but know we have done the best that we can, even if that is not top marks, or the fastest time, or to someone’s particular liking or standard, We participated, we tried, we did our best and that is what is important. God loves us all, whatever our ability, whatever our talent and knows that we are all different and that is what makes the world we live in so unique. Celebrate what you have achieved, and learn from the experiences where you think you should have done better. Learn from your mistakes. It is that constant process that continually shapes and changes us as we go through our lives.

Talking of abilities and talent, please do involve yourself in any way you can with the community of St Georges. Do flower arranging, use your counting skills to add up the money, gardening skills to keep our grounds looking lovely, childminding and teaching skills to help develop our Sunday School children, reading skills for service readings, the list is endless. Yes, at St Georges, we can all learn from each other.

Best Wishes Carolyn and Beverley. Church Wardens

we had enjoyed the discussions. It was suggested that we hold afurther study group in July and use one of the 4 week courses –“Making Room”- about making room in busy lives for God.Sessions will be on Thursday evenings in July from 7.45pm for 8pm start. Don’t be put off if you are away for a week, each session is separate so you can easily catch up. If you are interested please let Lesley (01277 215619) 07927904400 know so she can order materials. Thankyou

The Musical Afternoon Tea held on 11th May raised £154 for Christian Aid and £63 for the Church. Thankyou to all those who delivered and collected envelopes, around the roads and the Brownies and Guides and their leaders who delivered and collected the most part.

Fabulous Festival of Fun- will take place on Saturday 8th June from 1.30pm-4pm.Come along, bring the children and have a wonderful afternoon in the sun on the Bouncy castle and other stalls. Quinquennial Inspection:- Every five years , the Architect makes an inspection of the fabric of the building of the Church and advises what repairs we need to make. He then produces a report showing the condition of the building and a list of repairs, this is known as the Quinquennial Report. Our next Quinquennial inspection is due in July this year and we know that we will have repairs to do. We need to carry out some extensive electrical repairs and weatherproof the flat roof. We have £7400 in the Designated Fabric Fund (money put aside for repairs), which will be enough for the electrical repairs, but not the roof as well. We cannot use money from the Porch Fund because this is Restricted, and can only be used for the purpose it was given for, and our general fund is used to pay the bills, so we need to raise some money. The PCC proposed to set up a Crowd Funding page through Just Giving. Clare Emery has investigated this and set up a page for St Georges Church. To use this page please go tohttps://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/stgeorgesroofrepairs

It is easy to donate and the donations can be anonymous if you wish. We hope that a large number of small donations will raise enough to do the work. Please support us in this endeavour and

tell, tell, tell, your friends and family. If you are on twitter or facebook, please share this as much as possible. Our target to be raised is £6000. Thankyou for your support.Contactless payments:- Clare Emery from our PCC is investigating schemes for paying donations by contactless payment in Church. She has identified a suitable scheme run on behalf of the Church of England, and the PCC has agreed to trial this. We aim to buy a machine by the end of the month (to take advantage of a discount) and then use this at collection time and at the back of the Church. Donations could be made by typing in the amount and tapping your card. Watch this space!Porch Fund News:- We have recently been granted full Faculty (Permission to Build ) and full Planning Permission, so we now need to raise £85000 to start building. We have applied to the Garfield Weston Foundation for a grant of £18000 and will know in July whether we have been successful. Two further grants are being applied for a) Veolia Environmental Trust for up to £75k and b) National Churches Trust for £25k , both of these have a July deadline with responses in September. It is not guaranteed that we will get the grants, but if we are successful, we hope to start building in

January 2020. If not we will apply to other bodies. Again watch this space!

E-Bay: Do you enjoy selling things on e-bay? Sometimes we have items given to the Church and jumble sale that are too good to sell for jumble. In the past Mick Grimes would sell these on e-bay and donate the money to the Church. He has now moved away, so we need to find someone who would be willing to take over this job. There is no lower or upper limit on what you sell for, it is just what you can get. Examples of things sold in the past have been good electrical items, pieces of good china, model trains etc If you can help please contact Lesley Tanner on 01277 215619 or 07927904400.BROWNIES AND GUIDES AT ST GEORGESGirls can start Brownies from the age of 7.  They do a variety of exciting activities each week.  Crafts, cooking, working on interest badges, adventurous activities at Thriftwood - archery, rock climbing etc.  Brownies take part in community events and projects and go on an annual holiday.  Our Tuesday pack have a few spaces at the moment and would love to welcome new girls to their unit. Our Guide unit also has spaces.  Guides meet at St Georges on Thursdays from 7.15pm.  They are aged from 10 years and again take part in a variety of activities.  They also enjoy camping holidays too.   if you know of any girls aged 10-14 years that would be interested in joining then contact details are in the front of the magazine.

Fund RaisingDuring May the fundraising team have been very busy! Our afternoon tea was much enjoyed by all who attended.  We enjoyed endless pots of tea, cakes and sandwiches and some beautiful music from Emily and Jon. The afternoon raised £154 for Christian Aid and £63 for the church form the raffle.  Our thanks to 1st Pilgrims Hatch Rainbows for donating the raffle prizes. Our Jumble sale raised £514.  Thank you to all who helped move the jumble to the the church, set up and clear away afterwards.  Last month our Easter/St Georges Day raffle raised £88.  Thank you to all who bought tickets.

June 8th sees our STUPENDOUS SUMMER FAYRE 1.30-4pm in the church hall and grounds.  So far we have face painting, crockery smash, cakes, cream teas and refreshments, plants, crafts, bouncy castle, books and toys.  We do however need a few people to come forward and help run a stall.  If you can spare an hour please contact me - thank you.  Also please take a poster from the back of the church and put up somewhere locally to advertise the fayre for us.  Pray

that the sun shines on the day to entice lots of local people to come to our church and help us raise a good amount.

At the time of writing the Christian Aid money hasn’t been counted.  The Brownies Guides Leaders and a few PCC members have delivered and collected from some houses in the parish.  Our thanks to all who helped with this and our total will be announced in the next magazine.

P.C.C. Meeting Held Monday 13th May 2019

There was a meeting between the Churchwardens and Archdeacon Elizabeth Snowden on 25th March regarding the vacancy. We were offered 2 options –option 1 would be a ‘house of duty post’ which would mean a priest for 2 full days and Sunday services, but they won’t be paid a stipend. They would receive use of the vicarage and council tax payments. Option 2 would be a ‘half time post’. This would mean a priest for 3 days plus Sunday services and would be a paid post, as well as including a vicarage. We have requested option 2.The churchwardens are waiting to hear from the Archdeacon regarding her discussions with Becket Keys School.

Faculty has been granted for the porch. Lesley has applied for a grant from Garfield Weston, The National Churches Trust and she is in the process of applying for a grant from Veolia.

The Lent group meetings went well. The Church looked lovely on Easter Day and the attendance was good. The St. George’s Day service held on 28th April was well supported. The Dragon paid us a visit, the Sunday school children enjoyed taking part.

Beverley Smith and Carolyn Harris were elected as our Churchwardens at the AGM on Sunday 28th April.

P. C. C. officials – Vice Chairperson this year is Beverley Smith. Secretary is Pam Wood. Treasurer is Lesley Tanner.

Ray Smith has received an estimate from Brentwood Roofing regarding painting the roof with Solar Reflective paint and some minor repairs. This amounts to £5,040 inc. vat.

A full Electrical Inspection has to be done this year. Ray has not received an estimate yet but it could be about £3,000. This work needs to be done before July.

The Quinquennial inspection is due this year. Ray has been in touch with the church Architect, Ian Angus, and he would like to carry out the inspection in July, a date is to be arranged. Part of the inspection involves looking at all the roof levels, therefore he will need help putting up the ladders. Steve Smith and Clive Tanner have offered to help.

Page 13:  · Web viewTalking of abilities and talent, please do involve yourself in any way you can with the community of St Georges. Do flower arranging, use your counting skills to add up

Clare Emery has offered to register and set up a ‘Crowd Funding’ Account to help raise funds for the roof repairs.

The Street collections at The Robin Hood shops and Harewood Road raised £192.00. The Easter raffle raised £87.00 and the tea afternoon raised £154.00 for Christian Aid and the raffle made £63.00 for church funds. The Summer Fayre is on Saturday 8th June from 1.30-4pm.

The usual standard treasurer’s report was circulated. We have paid 86% of the parish share to date, we are £2,000 short. Planned giving is down, Total payments paid at 30th April is £14,393.

Bookings for the hall remain good, income from lettings keeps our bills paid. During August some work needs to be done to one of the Pre-School storage cupboards due to dampness.

The church work day is on Saturday 15th June from 10-4pm. Clare Emery suggested contactless donations, this has been

tried elsewhere and payments went up. The machine can be obtained from Parish Buying and is on offer at £69 until 31st May. Clare is willing to set up an account and purchase a machine, the PCC were in favour of this.
