Thank You Jackie Robinson Lessons for 3/23 through 4/27 not including spring break. A new reading lesson will be posted on this website after 4/27 so you may want to pace out these lessons so that your student has a bit of work to do M- F. The lessons/questions that you see following this page are questions that will lead your child through the rest of our story Thank You Jackie Robinson . I usually read the selected passage for that day and the questions to the class on and talk about the story as a group. We go over character development, author’s purpose, text to text, and text to self-connections. I cannot expect you all to be able to do these things, so I am just presenting you with the questions to give to your student. I have added some retell sections that your child should understand how to do as we have done these in class all year. The major purpose in this story is just to help them to think past literal translation of the story as it unfolds and create in their minds the authors purpose as to how she unfolded her story and developed the characters. The characters change throughout the story. Afterwards the children would then break into groups and work together to find the answers to all the questions. Before the next set of questions would be presented. Again since we are not meeting you can just assign and section of the questions and have your child work on those questions until finished.

Lessons for 3/23 through 4/27 not including spring break. A new reading lesson will be posted on this website after 4/27 so you may want to pace out these lessons so that your student has a bit of work to do M-F.

The lessons/questions that you see following this page are questions that will lead your child through the rest of our story Thank You Jackie Robinson.

This is all part of our Read-A-Loud story and a great way to create understanding using textual evidence. Textual evidence is basically 1. Reading a question about a passage just read 2. Answering that question in the student’s own words 3. Supporting the student’s answer with a direct quote from the story. If you look in their journal you will see examples from class.

I have dated the question sheets that follow so that you can see the pacing that I used in class. It is entirely up to you to pace your child as you see fit. I usually give out one set of questions for Monday and another set of questions on Wednesday. We use Friday as a day to catch up.

Jackie giving auto graphs at Ebbet’s Field.

Note: This is a picture of Yankees pitcher Don Larson talking to an usher. Don arson is the only pitcher to ever throw a perfect game in the World Series. He also is a graduate of Point Loma High school. David Wells is also a graduate of Point Loma High and he also threw a perfect game for the Yankees but not in a World Series. They are the only two pitcher to throw a perfect game who both graduated from the same high school in Major League History. David’s perfect game is also the fastest perfect game ever pitched.

Remember that Sam’s family is part of the Jewish religion and his family has traditions that are written about in this story.

Also remember that the author is making a statement about the time period this story was written from. During this time there was discrimination of people of color or African Americans. Because of discrimination (Not liking somebody because of their looks) the author is pointing out how two people from entirely different backgrounds could become friends.

1. Read pages 110 to 117 and write a two page detailed retell about what happens. This is the climax of our story.

2. After writing your retell of pages 110-117 then write a final paragraph and explain why you think the author wanted to write a story like “Thank You Jackie Robinson”.
