PROJECT: CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS

OBJECTIVE: Students will become better acquainted with the writing and naming of chemical compounds and the use of chemicals in everyday life in foods and products that are used in the home.

INSTRUCTIONS:1. Neatly cut out a minimum of 20 original labels from foods and products you

use everyday including the ingredients and the name/brand of the product. Make sure you cut out the front of the label so that the product can be identified. Mount each label neatly on a clean sheet of white paper and number them from 1 to 20 (or more). Two points will be deducted for each missing label.

2. You may use any food product and/or any of the following:a. over the counter medicines (this includes vitamins)b. pet productsc. toiletries/personal hygiene productsd. cleaning productse. gardening/home improvement productsf. drinks (including dry mixes)g. slim fast or diet food labelsh. candies/snacksi. any item with chemical compounds listedj. You may not use single elements. They must be compounds!

3. From these 20 labels (or more) you must find at least 35 different chemical compounds on them that you recognize. You will write the chemical formulas and the chemical names using the rules from our notes for chapters 7 and 8, on the paper you mounted the label. You must underline the name of each compound on the label.

4. Please number the chemical compounds sequentially from 1 to 35 throughout the project. For example, if label one has three compounds numbered 1 through 3, then label two’s compounds will start on number 4. Any duplication of compounds will result in a 5 point deduction per duplication .

5. Some companies provide ambiguous or unconventional chemical names to protect trade secrets. If you choose to use these compounds, you must provide each possible standard way of naming and writing these chemical formulas.

Example one: Tin chloride would be written as: Tin (II) chloride / Stannous chloride SnCl2

AND Tin (IV) chloride / Stannic chloride SnCl4 Example two: Dipotassium phosphate would be written as:

Potassium phosphate K3PO4

OR Potassium hydrogen phosphate K2HPO4

6. Hole punch all papers and place in a 3-prong report folder or small ring binder.

7. Include a decorated cover page with a title, your name, date, and period (5 points).

8. Include a table of contents that gives the name/brand of each product label and a list of all chemical names and formulas you used for that label (15 points). The numbering system for the labels and compounds should correspond to the numbering system used within the project.

9. You will be graded on accuracy (2 points for each chemical compound = 70 points) and neatness (10 points).

10. No LATE projects will be accepted. Any illness must be accompanied by a doctor’s note and the excused green slip. Projects must be turned in on the day you return from the absence. If you have a partner, the project must be turned in on the due date.

11. The project will count as ONE TEST GRADE!

13. If the entire project is typed (correctly!) you will receive 5 bonus points.

14. If the entire project is creatively/meaningfully decorated you will receive 5 bonus points.
