In the interview Ms. Underwood stated, “Her husband and SGT Klonis had done 13 different missions together”. On one mission that he had told her about an incident that had occurred as she said, “My Greek friend saved my life in Saipan. As a Japanese soldier was chasing her husband with a sword, SGT Klonis shot and killed the Japanese soldier. Her husband did not have any weapons with him because at the time he was relieving himself.” She also stated, “it was very difficult for him speak about these missions”. The 3 famous photos of SGT Klonis they all seem to have been taken at the same day and place, yet 2 different phortoghers! In the photo of Stanley Troutman photo of SGT Klonis, the helmet and the uniform being a Marine issue goes in to such much depth. Yet no mention of SGT’s igsina shown on the uniform; or of the one pouch that has a United States Army (USA) initials on it; or that the camfloge cover is not placed correctly on the helmet; or of no wear of an undershirt; or of sleeves rolled up; or that SGT Klonis’ uniform is mismatched. SGT Klonis is completely out of uniform. These photos where taken at wartime. There was no uniform supply surplus near by. 081430’44 Major Gantlonan called and said that there were 100 survivors, 105th Inf

The “survivors” were victims of the last Jampanese banzal charge on Saipan, which broke through the lines of the 105th Infantry. To escape the onslaught, hundreds of men fled into the ocean to the safety of coral reefs. They were rescued by amphibious vehiclesthe following day, July7, (The date”08” above is a typographical error.)

United States American soldiers took what they could find to survive. Even if it they used a mismatched uniforms. They fought hand in hand and assisted one another with what was needed to survive.

Soldiers trained together depending on the mission. As one may read the histories of war, one will find statements to that fact.

Reviewing Corporal Thomas E. Underwood’s documentation so many inconsistencies.

Mr. Nick Klonis and his family invite all that would like view all of SGT Angelo Klonis’ documentation, photos and all information found in the research of the famous photos. Assisting them also will be CW3 Gonzales as she said, “We are all soldiers, Army, Marine, Navy, Air Force, Reservists, male or female. We are soldiers of The United States of America and fight together as one”
