The Tyner Academy Renewable Energy course and outreach program.
The Tyner Academy Renewable Energy course and outreach program will introduce students in the system and surrounding areas to green technology, renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
We will accomplish this by building a portable operational classroom, called The Green Machine. The Green Machine is a trailer that will consist of an operating solar photovoltaic system generating electricity, an operating
solar water heater, portable wind turbine, solar oven, energy efficiency demonstrator which will compare the efficiency of compact, fluorescent, and incandescent lamps; the energy efficiency demonstrator will be powered by
the onboard solar photovoltaic system.
A biological fossil fuel pathway will be represented by using plastic dinosaurs, fossil ferns, and lumps of coal to discuss the origin, technology, and impacts of fossil fuel. We will also include a model of a passive solar home,
which uses sunshine to heat and light the home, the model will also demonstrate summer cooling and ventilating by making use of convective air currents which are created by the natural tendency of hot air to rise. A fuel cell
demonstration kit will demonstrate the concept of a hydrogen economy. The Green Machine will also demonstrate a solar furnace that can heat a home with no electricity usage.
The Green Machine trainer is designed and built by students enrolled in the Renewable Energy program. When the Green Machine comes to visit, students will experience Renewable energy, green technology and environmental
sustainability in an exciting hands-on way. Promoting these concepts will have a lasting impact on these students, challenging them to find new and innovative ways to decrease the carbon footprint left behind.
