Unit Transportation

We will open this month’s unit reading the book Transportation by Gail Gibbons. This book discusses different ways we can get around. We will be discussing transportation this month. What is transportation? and what are the three ways we can travel? We will discuss how people get around. (Tuesday) We will make a land, air, and sea graph. Build on their prior knowledge from the book and have them place the pictures on the mode of transportation it matches.

 

Epic - Books for Kids (getepic.com) (remote learners link)

Literacy Center: Letter K craft. K is for kite the children will review the letter sound K then create their own kite craft and write the word kite to the best of their abilities.

Dramatic Play: Travel Agency: Obtain travel brochures from local travel agencies. Also look for maps and other items for your Transportation Theme dramatic play area! While you're at it, ask the travel agency manager if they have a staff member that would come to your preschool group to talk about their job and bring brochures, etc. If you are willing to send some information home from the agent, they should be willing to donate their time! Set up your area with a table for a desk, clipboards, pictures, pens, pencils, paper. Also provide paper and markers/crayons for the children to make tickets and their own brochures. (at home you can prepare paper and crayons and magazines for your child to create their own brochure)(This activity will be done for the week. Discuss with the

At home use a paper create a bingo card drawing shapes on it. Then create flash cards with the same shapes and colors for the children to match.

Science Center: Creating our own Playdough: The children will learn how to measure and make their own playdough. We will create a how-to recipe on chart paper. The children will take turns mixing and adding ingredients. The children will then use transportation cookie cutters to create their own vehicles. Ask what transportation vehicle will you make? Where does it belong land, air, sea?

Writing Center The children will be creating their own passports. We will discuss with them that in order to travel to certain places we need special book to get stamped by different countries we visit; this book is called a passport. We will have the children place their pictures inside their passport as well. The children will use these passports throughout the classroom centers. Each center will have special stamping station and we will label each center as places we read in the book “From Kalamazoo to Timbuktu by Harriet Ziefert.” (link for remote learners) https://youtu.be/N94OyKQpiTI )

Unit TransportationWe will learn about Air Transportation. We will build on their prior knowledge of air travel using a rocket to go to space, from last month. They will learn about airplanes. We will read the book Airport by Byron Barton. The children will learn what people do in the airport. Who works in the airport? and why we use airplanes?

Writing Center: The children will create their own license plates with the letters of their names. The children will look at a picture of a real license plate and then create their own. They will stamp the letters of their name on the license plates.

Sensory Center: Add items to a water bin and encourage students to find the items and sort by color.Literacy Center: They will use the letter book and music to review the special letter’s sound and words that begin with that letter. At home you can draw your own airplane using paper and crayons.

ThursdayDate 3/4/21Focus question: What kinds of transportation do I use and why?

Unit TransportationWe will continue to discuss air transportation. We will discuss another type of air travel, Helicopters. What is a helicopter? Who can use a helicopter? Why do we use helicopters?  Prepare pictures of a helicopter and discuss the parts of a helicopter. What are the similarities or differences between an airplane and a helicopter?

Writing Center: Practice tracing horizontal and vertical lines on a paper.Block Center Vehicles- creating and using different types of vehicles we find in our community. What parts do we need to get a vehicle to work?

Art Center: Creating a helicopter using construction paper, craft sticks, cotton balls, glue and crayons. At home you can draw your own helicopter with paper and crayons.

Math Center: Patterns- working on an (ABABA) pattern

Literacy Center: The children will read a book and search for the sight word of the week (see). How many times did you find the word?Sensory Center:Encourage students to use their sensory bin to write their first letter of their name. At home you can make a sensory bag using a Ziplock and paint.

Art Center: Create a hot air balloon. The children will use coffee filters and construction paper to create their own hot air balloon. At home you can draw your own hot air balloon with any art materials available.

Math Center: Parking Lot: Use a piece of cardboard to create a parking lot for vehicles. Number the parking spots as well as an assortment of small vehicles and invite children to park the vehicles in the correct parking space.
