TEACHMEET: FRIDAY 3 MAY 2019

ACTIVE REVISION STRATEGIES

Some ideas on class revision activities:

Vocab / key terms revision: missing letters, jumbled words, hangman, spot the mistake, double-sided flashcards, Post-Its

Three bullet points to explain/add detail to/find examples for…

Self-audit: tick off what they can/can’t remember from a topic list / specification

Short recall test (low-stakes testing effect)

Explain to a novice

Base the lesson around common misconceptions

Spot my mistakes – then correct my mistakes (differentiated: say how many they are, or what type of mistake)

Speak before you write – talk to a peer for a timed period including anything can remember in relation to a particular bullet point.

Snakes and ladders in teams

Quizzes and apps – Kahoot (remember that wrong answers can be useful too), Quiz Up, Quizlet, Quizizz and mini-whiteboards

Planning maps – each subject should have a writing frame: make these colourful and accessible, persuading students to apply their understanding

Thinking Hats – applying theories to new contexts

Convincing students that interleaving and spacing is better for them than 4-hour cramming marathons! (Pomodoro technique)

A possible framework for constructing a series of revision lessons…

(caveat: there are many, many different ways of doing this; the model here is just one suggestion designed to prompt thinking)
