Unit 13/14 - Project Proposal

CandidateName Morgan ScottCandidate Number 20095691Pathway Film and TV production

Project Title ICE - Youngestt

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words)

I will be creating a music video for my Final Major Project. I will be working with a friend whom is an artist and we will be creating a music video to his song “ICE “ Produced by JrDaProducer.

My music video will be an urban environment styled video with no story line, but I will be focusing on the visuals and effects that I can use for this which I have learn’t by researching effects used and finding different

styles of rap, hiphop and r&b videos that have influenced.I hope to capture a young audience that enjoy this sort of music and the cinematography that comes with the

music videos.

Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)

My main influences are the music videos for hiphop/trap that are new to the scene, I also want to incorporate stylesfrom the 80’s but my main focus will be on modern videos and shot styles.I am going to be researching more music videos to understand the components that come into a project, the effects andshots that are used, and the general cinematography of these. My target audience will mainly be towards people that enjoy this sort of music and mainly young adults as these are thetype of videos that they enjoy.

For this project I will be playing all roles except the role of the artist whose song I will be making the video too.I will be doing the pre-production, production and post-production with my main focus being on the visuals and editing. The technical requirements will be all the equipment needed to create a music video except the audio as I alreadyhave the song that I will be using as the artist already has it produced.

Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words)To evaluate my work I will be making a daily blog of the whole research and production process to keep on top of it

and to also show how I have worked my way to the end result. As I will be working with a friend who lives in Blackpool, there may come to be an issue with travelling and meeting up, but for now everything is all planned and there

shouldn’t be a problem, but this is a possibility and I must keep this in mind.

Proposed Research Sources and Bibliography (Harvard Format)

For my research I will be doing a focus group with a few people that enjoy the same sort of music as the style I will be working on to see what sort of visuals they would enjoy and I will also be doing a focus group with people that do not listen to this sort of music to see what visuals would encourage them to listen to it.I will be

Project Action Plan and Timetable

This section provides you with an opportunity to outline your planning and organisation over a period of weeks and the activities you will need to carry out to complete your project in the agreed time frame. The more time and thought you give to planning your project the more successful it is likely to be. It is important that you consider how you will balance ambition, time and realism in the realisation of the project. You should also include what you are going to do, how you will do it and by when. Remember to include: time spent sourcing materials and other resources to conduct research, seek feedback from tutors and peers, and identify when you will carry out independent study.

At the back of the Learner’s Progress Tracker Book, is an academic calendar. Please refer for dates. There is also an Academic Calendar available on the VLE.Project Action Plan and Timetable

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

This project portfolio is a report of my Extended Project for my second-year UAL Extended Diploma in my Creative Media Film and TV pathway. My project is a music video to the song “ICE”, which was written by one of my closest friends who goes under the stage name of “Youngestt”. The song is hiphop/rhythm and blues, and he talks about success and how you can work your way up even when you’re at the lowest of the low. The song does not have much of a story line, so neither will my video, but I will be using his words and transforming scenes to represent the song and the message he is putting across. This portfolio presents the background of my project starting with writing about myself, what I have learnt on my course and who or what inspired me for my project. I will then follow up explaining what my project is about and why it is important.

The Background of my Project

This section is intended to provide a context for your project. It answers this question: “What special factors were at work that might have influenced the conceptualisation and execution of your project?”

Here you can take some of your previous writings and blog posts to address some of following questions. You can use any medium (Videos, photos, audio, sketches, etc.)

What is it that makes me do my project? My personal experiences that influence my choices (idea for the project, my role in the

project, how it relates to my future career) What is the basic premise of my project? What do I seek to achieve and how it relates to my target audience?

I have always had a passion for creating music videos since a young age, and my focus during this course has been improving my skills and expanding my knowledge to improve the quality of my videos. I also aspire to work in music video production with new and upcoming artists, so working on this video for my FMP is truly something I am going to enjoy and am excited about working on. As a young teen I would make music videos of myself lip singing songs and I feel like that is where my passion to create music videos has come from, but as I have grown up, I have got more technical and have enjoyed working behind the camera more to improve shots and the cinematography of them in general. I would also make lifestyle videos of activities I would do in Tenerife, matching them with music.

On this project I will be working with one of my close friends whom I have known for years. He is a aspiring R&B (rhythm and blues) and hip hop artist, so working on this video is something quite meaningful to me and I would like to do him and myself proud. With this music video I seek to achieve more attention to this artist and also to gain an audience that enjoys this genre of music as when I finish college, I will still be carrying on working with him and it is great to have the opportunity to create a base whilst still at college so I can receive feedback and constructive criticism.

Who am I?

For the task of who am I we did a Myers Briggs test and also spoke about a few things that we enjoyed.

The Myer Briggs test gave me the personality of the Debater. Whilst reading the characteristics of this personality type I could definitely see some similarity, especially in the name itself, but there were things that seemed a bit off point to my personality, attitude and way of thinking.

After we had answered these questions for ourselves and received answered accurate to what ewe thought of ourselves, we then had a peer to answer the questions for us, as when my peer

Areitha got the results back it came back as The Entertainer personality. When I read the results to this test, I could definitely relate more and saw a larger similarity.

We also spoke about three things we enjoyed, and I spoke about music videos and their cinematography, hiphop music and the message that it spreads and longboarding which is a sport I have been doing for 4 years.

I also created a handmade collage which contained all the stuff I enjoyed. I found this task quite fun as I love getting creative, especially when it’s talking about myself.

What did I learn on my course?

Throughout the two years of this course, it is safe to say I have amplified my skillset and knowledge to an extent that I am happy with. We have learnt all aspects from research to lighting in film which has really helped me when coming to the end of the year and working on my Final Major Project.

I have worked on various projects for this course and there is a clear progress throughout the two years with my techniques and skills. I have improved my camera skills, lighting techniques and audio recordings. I have also learnt how to edit on Avid which is a huge help for when it comes to editing my Final Major Project.

What is my project about?

My project is a modern urban music video to an original song called ICE which was sung and

produced by my close friend and his brother. This song is about how he is cold when it comes

to fame but will still stay humble if he gets there, which in his song, he confirms he will. I will

be using typical shots for this genre of music and videos to give the feel that these do.

My role in the project is camera woman, director, editor and producer.

Why my project is important?

My project is important to me as it is a personal gain once I have completed it. A music video is something I have always aspired to create, especially when it is helping someone else out as well. I believe that the song represents humbleness which is something I always admire. It’s also important to me to show my camera and editing skills for future jobs and working with other artists. It will help me develop my skills and see how well I can work with someone else that is in front of the camera, improving my camera, editing and directing skills.

WordsInterest/Topic/Theme 150

• This should include researching existing similar media products.• Anything and everything that is already written and done about your

interest/topic in the form of written work, video, audio, interactive elements such as websites, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram posts, etc.

• Make sure that your research does not include internet based sources only. You should include at least two books, the range of magazines and other non-online sources.

I am interested in urban music videos, urban music and aesthetically pleasing cinematography, which is what my project will represent. The topic of the song is ‘ice in the veins’, which means how someone can be cold and can also mean money, as an urban work for diamonds and chains is ice.

Why is it important? - Importance 100

This is important to show other upcoming artists and music video creators that you do not need a high budget to create a succesfull music video and that all you really need is a camera and an artist willing to work infront of the camera. The project itself is important to me as I have always had a passionf or creating music videos and editing clips with music, so it’s something that will help me work on these skills for when I enter the industry or start working with more artists as a freelancer for fun.

My research question(s) 100

I am going to find out what urban music means to different types of people and what these music videos mean or present to them. I would like to see the difference between music videos with and without a budget. I am also going to be looking at the influence of urban music on today’s society.

CHAPTER 2

Literature/Resources Review

Introduction The introduction should be relatively brief, simply providing an overview of the chapter. For example:

This chapter will be showing the knowledge I have gained in my subject throughout the course and will include a range of resources that I have researched and looked at which helped me come to the conclusion of what I’ve wanted to do for my final project. I will commence with my practitioners report, where I looked at the director Spike Jonze and his work, which influenced my ideas for my music video.

Practitioners Report

Spike Jonze

Director, actor, screenwriter and producer Spike Jonze was born Adam Spiegel on October 22, 1969, in Rockville, Maryland. Related (on his father’s side) to the prosperous Spiegel family and an heir to its catalog fortune, Jonze grew up in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Bethesda, Maryland, with his mother and older sister (his parents divorced when he was still young). By the time he entered high school, he had adopted the name “Spike Jonze” and was participating in competitive skateboarding and BMX bicycling.Immediately after his graduation from high school, the 17-year-old Jonze moved to Los Angeles and began working as an editorial assistant at Freestylin’, a biker magazine. In 1991, he helped found Dirt, a short-lived spin-off of the popular teen magazine Sassy, aimed at teenage male readers. His first music-video gig came in 1992, when he was hired to shoot video footage of skateboarding for Sonic Youth’s “100%.”Jonze’s breakthrough video, for the song “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys, was an inspired take-off on 1970s cop shows; the video earned four MTV Video Music Awards, including one for Jonze (best director). That same year, Jonze cemented his reputation for innovation and creativity with his eye-catching video for Weezer’s “Buddy Holly,” in which the alternative band performed their hit single in the middle of what appeared to be an episode of the 1970s sitcom Happy Days.Throughout the 1990s, Jonze directed music videos for many other prominent artists—including R.E.M., the Breeders, Puff Daddy, the Chemical Brothers and Björk—as well as a number of memorable television commercials for companies like Nike, Sprite, Nissan and Coca-

Cola. His interest and talent also extended to the other side of the camera: He was dragged behind a van in a TV spot for Levi’s 501, and played bit parts in the films Mi Vida Loca (1993) and The Game (1997).Along with directing the 1999 video for “Praise You,” the hit single by British DJ Fatboy Slim, Jonze starred in the video as spastic community dance-troupe leader Richard Koufey. That summer he showed up to the MTV VMAs as Koufey, and took home three awards. Additionally, Jonze directed a number of short features during this time.

Research Design

Introduction

This chapter is ‘How-to’ section of your EXTENDED PROJECT. In this chapter you have to introduce the design of the research, how data was collected.

The introduction should be relatively brief, simply providing an overview of the chapter. For example:

This chapter explains research design for my EXTENDED PROJECT. It starts with research questions and follows by the description of the research design and research methods used in my project.

Research Questions

Start with stating the intent of your EXTENDED PROJECT. What are the key aims and objectives of your project? Outline the key characteristics of your project. Write about your questions? You have to base your research design on questions and interests. Ask yourself: “What do I want to find out?” Write to the reader clear research questions, what you wanted to find out?

Research Design Evolution

In this chapter, you will expand on what you wrote in your project proposal. Write about what you researched and how you collected your data (research activities). Remember, in this chapter, you will only write what you have researched and what research activities you used. In the next chapter, you will write about your findings, analysis and conclusions. You can write following chapters about findings and analysis using same themes (see below) for the sub-titles.

You can use following research themes as separate sub-titles:

• Subject you are going to research (this will be primary research you conducted; the secondary research about subject will be in literature review)

o This is anything done by you, and it could be such:o Online questionnaire – you could ask your Facebook friends to comment on your

project idea and give you some additional ideas how you can make it better.o Get the feedback from your lecturers and comment on it. o You can contact companies, council, artist depending on what is your project about to

get their opinion on your project idea. o You can use your phone or tablet to research, take photos of possible locations and

places that you can use in your project.

• Target audience

Ask yourself questions: Who? What? Where?

o Who is your target audience? Who are you aiming your product at?o What type of audience is it? Investigate the target demographic and record the type of

media or entertainment they consume. o Where can you find this out? You can use, ‘YouGov Profiles’ site to find out about your

target audience demographic. (secondary)o You can set up interviews or record a ‘Vox Pops’ (primary) to find information about

your audience.

• Skills and techniques

o Come up with the plan of what skills and techniques you will need to research to produce an effective, original and to near professional standard project.

o For example, you can watch tutorials or read about how to achieve specific skills and techniques that you will need for your project (secondary)

o Experiment with range of skills yourself (primary)

• Production research

o Explain what and how:

other people ideas, etc.) o Props (how: make a list, ask to borrow, make it, buy it, use what you have)o Production (techniques, hardware, workflow) ( how: research what you need / how:

try it yourself) o Post -production (Edit, colour correction, VFX, etc. ( how: read, watch how other

people/professionals do it, try it yourself)

List all research activities; what activities you conducted to answer your questions and collect the data? Write about the data you collected; your choice of data presentation and how you structured your data analysis.

The research activities should be identified e.g:-

Observations (observational drawings; using photography, video and audio to collect data)

Documents analysis (written, but also video and audio documents) Workshops Interviews Focus groups Surveys (visual, audio, etc.) Experiments Tests and measurements

CHAPTER 4

Research Findings

In this chapter, you will summarise the collected data and the statistical treatment, and/or mechanics, of analysis. You should start this paragraph by briefly restating the topic/theme of your project (take it from Chapter 1).

Explain the object of each question, research activity, point out results, and present those results in a chosen form of summarised data. Select method of presenting data carefully.

In a quantitative study, the results usually begin with a description of the sample (e.g., sample size, description of participants who were excluded and why, handling of missing data). Next, descriptive statistics (e.g., frequencies/percentages for categorical variables, means, standard deviations, and ranges for continuously measured variables) are presented.

In a qualitative study, the results often include many quotes from participants who were interviewed. Here you should also present your non-textual elements such as photos, videos, audio files, maps, tables, charts, mind maps, SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis, etc.

Data analysis

What strategies did you use to analyse your data? What did you find out?

Conclusion - How did the research help me with my project?

What did you learn from your research and how it informed your project?

Originate a range of ideas – list all ideas you had and explain how you chose the final idea Analyse each idea for viability - use focus groups and lecturer to support Fill out the project proposal form

CHAPTER 5

My Project

Introduction In this chapter you should present the level of self-direction, personal initiative and commitment necessary to progress ideas and find solutions, and the practical, theoretical and technical comprehension, appreciation, knowledge and proficiency necessary to achieve identified goals. The ability to plan and organise work within a given timeframe and the efficient production of outcomes both individually and collaboratively.

Pre-Production

Produce Pre-Production Portfolio which will formally define your project (location survey; risk assessment; treatment; script; budget; schedule etc.).

Pitch your proposal to the production board (video recording of your production board presentation)

Analyse your target audience. Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume

Production Project management techniques, (notes of team meetings; production and post-

production schedules; call sheets, etc.) Team and individual performance monitoring (weekly check against schedule) Development – Demonstrate development (photos from the shoot, screenshots from

computers). Keep daily production and post-production diary and reflect on your production process.

Post-production Describe post post-production of your project. Assess your production and post-production process. Describe, and critically analyses any

production problems and the solution you experienced.

Presentation

In this chapter, you should demonstrate the degree of competence and proficiency shown in the organisation and presentation of yourself and your work to an audience. Your EXTENDED PROJECT has to be presented appropriately (effectively; imaginatively) presented with suitable (relevant; purposeful) media conventions to suit the target audience.

Write about what influenced your decision to present your work in a certain way.

CHAPTER 7

Project Evaluation

Critically evaluating your final media project against the agreed requirements and parameters. Answer following questions:

Introduce the project in your words List five strengths and five weaknesses in your final design Was there a theme for the design ideas? Can you describe it? Can you reference any

influences here? - art movements, designers, media companies/campaigns, etc. What experiments and exploration did you do (what happens if). How did it affect your

development? Find a similar type of design publication - place it next to your own - what

comparisons/difference can you identify? What were the key areas of development in this project? - use your daily reflections to

help you with this Review your proposal - what changed, what developments did you make, did you manage

to complete everything you set out to achieve? What did the client think of your concept? How did that make you feel? What could you do to adapt the work produced to improve and develop it? Is the final work appropriate for the needs of the project? Does it sufficiently answer your

brief? Reflect on your pitch to the board; how did you feel about it before? Did it go better or

worse than you expected? What was the feedback from the client/lecturer? What do you think you could improve next time?
