Blog post for 100 deadliest days:

The summer months bring an influx of people going on road trips, teen drivers visiting each other, and motorcyclists taking advantage of the warm weather.

However, this time in between Memorial Day and Labor Day are also known as the 100 deadliest days for drivers. This increase in motor activity makes everyone driving on the roads more susceptible to a crash, especially when people aren’t paying attention to those around them.

It’s important for all motorists and motorcyclists to share the road. Motorcyclists have the same rights, privileges and responsibilities as every motorist and yet are more vulnerable due to less protection from their vehicle. Here are some tips to keeping everyone on the road safe:

Leave a 3-4 second difference between you and a motorcycle Watch out for motorcycles that are slowing down, they don’t always need to use a brake to stop Always signal your intentions before changing lanes and double check your blind spot for

motorcyclists Look twice before crossing an intersection for motorcycles Always drive sober

Following these tips can help you avoid a dangerous situation out on the roads this summer. Remember to constantly be aware of your surroundings and to share the road with others. #MotorcycleSafety #RideSafe #RideSafeIndiana

Blog post for helmet campaign:

Wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle can be the difference between life and death during a crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that helmets saved the lives of 1,859 motorcyclists in 2016. An additional 802 lives could have been saved if all motorcyclists had worn their helmets.

Don’t be another statistic by not wearing a helmet. By following these helmet tips, you could save your own life during dangerous situations on the road:

Wear a DOT-compliant helmet and use reflective tape and gear to be more visible Replace your helmet is it has sustained an impact, or if it is a few years old Find a helmet that fits you. It shouldn’t move or slip, and it should be comfortable. Choose from

four different styles: full-face, three-quarter or open-face, partial-coverage, and modular. Look out for your friends. Encourage other motorcyclists to wear a helmet as well as any

passengers that might be riding with you.

Page 3: mettathomasportfolio.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewWearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle can be the difference between life and death during a crash. The National Highway

More and more motorcyclists have caught onto the trend of wearing a helmet. Helmet use among motorcyclists on expressways increased significantly to 88.9 percent in 2017, up from 69.8 percent in 2016.

Don’t be the odd one out. Wear a helmet when you ride and protect your life.

The time in between Memorial Day and Labor Day are known as the 100 deadliest days for people on the roads. As more people flock to the highways and streets to go on road trips and vacations, the greater the risk of an accident occurring for both motorists and motorcyclists.

The smaller stature of motorcycles pose a greater risk for motorcyclists to not be seen on the roads. It’s important for motorcyclists to make themselves as visible as possible by wearing bright clothing and using signals when switching lanes or turning.

In addition, before hitting the highway make sure to check your motorcycle’s tire pressure and tread depth, hand and foot brakes, headlights and signal indicators, and fluid levels. This can prevent a potential breakdown or accident.

If you’re taking your motorcycle out for a road trip and are carrying cargo, make sure to keep the load low, secure, forward, and that it’s distributed evenly. While taking a rest stop, which you should do every two hours, check the load to make sure it hasn’t shifted or worked loose.

Making sure you are prepared, alert, and protected will lower your risk of getting into an accident. Enjoying the summer months also requires everyone to be safe while on the roads.

Blog post for helmet campaign:

Finding the right motorcycle helmet for you is critical to your comfort as well as your safety during a ride. Everyone’s head is built different making finding the right helmet a process.

Helmets come in three different shapes- round oval, intermediate oval, and long oval. Before buying a helmet it’s important that you determine the shape of your head. Use a mirror or have a friend look down on your head from the top.

When measuring the size of your head, use a cloth tape. Begin at just above your eyebrows and circle it around the thickest point in the rear of your head. You can then cross reference this measurement with a helmet size chart.

A correctly sized helmet will be a little tight and will provide an even pressure around your head without uncomfortable pressure points. The helmet should not move when you shake your head.

Motorcycle helmets come in many different styles, each one suitable for different riders. The different styles include:

Full Face: covers head, chin, and jaw, moveable face shield, aerodynamic features Modular: full face protection with chin bar/face shield that pivots up for an open face, common

with adventure dual-sport riders Dual-Sport: extended chin bar and visor, requires goggles, good for off-road adventures and

weather conditions Off-Road: extended chin bar and visor, requires goggles, good for motocross and other off-road

activities, good air flow Hi Viz: increases ability to be seen, offers an additional level of safety Half and Open-Face: only provides some level of protection, no chin guard, significant wind

noise

Make sure your helmet has an official DOT or Snell Memorial Foundation certification sticker on the outside back. This signifies that it meets or exceeds test standards.

Wearing a helmet can be the difference between life and death in the event of a motorcycle crash. Take your time and find a helmet that’s right for you.
