Talk…. What sound does the word begin with? Which sound comes next?

Reading - Let us begin the week by reading some mini-beast stories; which one will you choose? You can read one of the following online, find your own story online or look on your bookshelves for one of your favourites. Here are some of our favourite mini-beast stories. Find somewhere comfortable to sit and here we go.

Mathematics and Numeracy

This week our ‘Abacus Active Learn’ Maths topic is ‘Number and Place Value’.

The objectives this week are to ensure children can:

Write numerals to 10 Estimate a set of objects, sounds, actions or images up to 20 Compare and order numbers to 20 Understand that teen numbers (11–19) are 10 plus some more Count back from any given number up to 20

Here are some activities you can try to practise these skills:

Never Ending Counting Snakes – use the attached snake template for this activity. You can print it off or make your own. Can you write the numbers 0-10 on one snake with correct formation and in the correct order? Do the same with numbers 0-20 and for an extra challenge try to write the numbers up to 100! WOW! How many snakes will you use?

Estimating Surprise - Set up five sets of different everyday objects and cover each set with a different cloth (tea towel). Each set should have a different number of objects up to 20. Ask your child to feel through the cloth. Explain you want them to estimate how many objects there are under the cloth. (They are not guessing or identifying the type of object.) They must not count. They should feel the pile of objects through the cloth then write their estimates on a piece of paper. Ask questions, e.g. Are there more than ten or less than ten? When your child has finished estimating remove the cloth and allow them to make a new estimate or they can stick to their first estimate. Do they want to change their mind? Count the objects to check. Repeat the process with the other piles of objects.

Counting back from 20 - Complete the count back to blast off (below), writing the numbers from 20 to 0 on a number track  ‘Countdown from 20’. Then rehearse saying these numbers once they are written. Choose any number between 2 and 20 and practise counting backwards from that number too. Use the number line to begin with then recite the numbers backwards without help. Pob lwc!

Comparing and Ordering numbers - Line up number cards 1−20 (you can cut out 20 squares and write on the numbers if you

haven’t got number flashcards). Put the number cards out of order. Tell your child the aim is to put the number cards in order. You can use lego, pencils, buttons or anything small to place the corresponding number of items next to the number. Encourage your child to choose a number and ask questions to compare their groups of objects, e.g. Which group has more eg buttons? Can you put these in order from smallest to largest: 3, 5 and 8?

Teen Numbers: 10 and some more – use small toys/items. Make 1 group of 10 objects and say, ‘This is one group of 10’. Let’s check. Count the 10 objects. Make another group of 1-9 objects.1 group of 10 add some more eg 4 makes how many altogether? Count. Write the teen number. 14 is one group of 10 (point at the number 1) add and 4 small ones (pointing at the 4), we call the small ones ‘units’.Repeat with other teen numbers.

Remember to check out the Digit Dog Challenges this week. https://digitdogchallenges.com/ Wow! These challenges are fun.

Paddle and splash in a pool or stream (with or without wellies on)

Tell a member of your family that you love them and tell them why.

Cross curricular Our theme is…. ‘Spring and Minibeasts’

ScienceYou might have seen lots of Rainbow pictures in windows and on television. Talk to your families about rainbows. Can you find out how rainbows form? How many colours are there in a rainbow; what are they? Click on the link below to help you find out. Draw or paint a rainbow. We would love to see your artwork.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqbgJ3c3yhc

Charlie sent us a picture of a science experiment he carried out at home; he would like all his friends to have a go too. We wonder what will happen! Place skittle sweets around the edge of a plate and add some water then observe. Talk about what you see happening and take some photos.

Creative – try a few of these activities

Some other creative suggestions: -

Make some rainbow slime…... either add drops of food colouring to shaving foam or add drops of food colouring to a mixture of cornflour and water and start mixing… lots of fun to be had. Remember to wash your hands when you finish playing.

Rainbow Fish – paint the scales using celery

Colour or print a piece of paper in rainbow colours. Sprinkle flour or salt or sugar on top then write one of your flashcard words to see the colours appear.

(tissue paper preferably) and stick onto a heart shaped piece of plastic, then hang in a window.

Signs of Spring – Every day we are all having some daily exercise whether its indoors, out in your garden or going for a walk. Last week all the teachers went for a walk looking for signs of Spring. Wow! We saw many things; these are some of the things we found.

This week we would like you to look for signs of Spring in your garden and when you go out and about. Take photos, write a list or draw what you see. You could even make a tally sheet and record a tally every time you see the same thing. For example:

Sign of Spring Tally Totallamb l l l 3

bluebell l l l l 5

Have a super week everyone.
