The Emotional Life Of JesusVarious Verses

I. IntroductionA. Emotions are wonderful things, aren’t they? They are the music that chases

away the dullness of life. Our emotions put the spark behind our eyes and the spring beneath our steps. We are never more alive than when we feel.1. Perhaps this is why our culture is so controlled by emotions. Many of us

stagger through our day in search of the next emotional high like an addict in search of his next fix. How we feel has become the most important consideration.

2. That’s why many people are guided by their emotions. They say, “Follow your heart. Listen to your feelings and you’ll know which way to go. Let your passions drive you.”

3. In a culture which marginalizes God this has a disastrous result. Feelings are a fuel that quickly burns out, and a life lived by emotions inevitably crashes.

B. That’s why some have come to the conclusion, “Since the emotions cannot be trusted, then the mind is where it is at.” Knowledge is the goal. So, keep a stiff upper lip. Swallow those tears. Repress that anger. Be leery of any excessive joy. 1. Instead, focus on your mind. Become a spiritual tadpole. You know what

a tadpole is; it is the aquatic larva of the frog. It is a creature with a huge head, and nothing much else beside.

2. Some of us have become Christian tadpoles. Our heads are bulging with Biblical instructions, but we have no place for our emotions. We exist in the frigid waters of accuracy without carrying the torch of love.

C. Can I please remind us that God is an emotional being? He can be grieved (Eph. 4:30), and become angry (Heb. 3:10; Ps. 95:10), and is capable of great zeal (Isa. 9:7), deep love (John 3:16), and abounding joy (Luke 15:7). The reason we have emotions in the first place is because we are created in the image of God. We reveal the divine nature when we express emotions rightly. 1. How do you do that? Jesus, the very image of God, expressed emotions

with perfection. We cannot read the gospel accounts without seeing that Jesus had emotions. He lived with tremendous passion. The Bible describes more than 20 different emotions Jesus felt and expressed.

2. He becomes our model then, not only for the truths which fill our minds, but for the passions that ignite our hearts.

3. When you examine the gospels you find a full colored picture of the emotional life of Jesus. As we are flesh and blood, He shared the same with all of its emotional attachments (Heb. 2:14). We could look at the different emotions Jesus expressed: His compassion, love, joy, anger, sorrow, and grief. However, I think it will be more profitable and practical to consider what caused those powerful emotions in Jesus. What kind of things was He passionate about? The gospels provide us with several

things which ignited the passion of Jesus, which in turn, should warm our spirits as well.

II. What Jesus Was Passionate AboutA. Those In Physical Distress. For example, did you know in the gospel

record, the thing which most often aroused an emotional response in the heart of Jesus was seeing people in physical distress? Oh yes, He saw the sin behind it, and He had a spiritual reason for relieving it, but Jesus was pained to see people in physical distress. 1. This Disabled & Diseased. It is surprising that He who came to deal with the

sins of men would be so moved by their suffering. He could have easily said, “I’m here to deal with a spiritual problem, so take your lame, blind and deaf elsewhere.” a. And yet, Jesus’ stomach literally tied up in knots when he saw people

physically suffering. That’s what the “compassion” means. When the multitudes came out to Jesus carrying their lame and blind, and filled with all kinds of diseases, it broke Jesus’ heart to see people in such physical distress. “He was moved with compassion for them and healed their sick” (Matt. 14:14).

b. While others saw the physically disabled as curiosities to talk about or spectacles to avoid (John 9). Jesus was moved with compassion to touch the leper, talk to the blind, befriend the lame, and handle the diseased. The physically disabled and diseased were not disruptions to Jesus’ schedule or misfits to be avoided. They were the objects of His passionate concern. You hear it in the English word, don’t you? “Compassion” – feeling with the person in need. Jesus’ passions were stirred by those in physical distress.

c. That should make a difference in the way we visit someone in the hospital, or care for someone in the home, or talk to someone who is disabled, or pray for someone who is sick.

2. The Hungry. So sensitive was Jesus to people’s physical needs He even became concerned about people getting hungry. On a number of occasions the crowds came to hear Jesus speak, and He taught late into the day. But, He wasn’t so self-consumed that He thought, “I’ve done my bit, good luck on getting home.” Rather, He said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat” (Mark 8:2). I bring this up to illustrate how in tune Jesus was with the physical suffering of people. The pains in the flesh of others wounded Him just as deeply.

3. The Grieving. The depth of Jesus’ emotional response is seen toward those who were grieving. a. On one occasion Jesus and His disciples entered the village of Nain and

encountered a funeral procession for a young man who was the only son of a widow woman. The text says, “When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep”” (Luke 7:13). And he raised the boy up and gave him back to his mother. Her tears over the past, her fears about the future, Jesus felt within Himself and He determined to do something about it.

b. Later He found Himself at the graveside of a friend, Lazarus, and surrounded by His grieving friends Mary and Martha, and the emotion of the moment resonated in His heart and, “He groaned in the spirit and was troubled” (John 11:33), at how death had invaded God’s good world and, “Jesus wept” and the people said, “See how He loved Him” (John 11:35-36).

4. What was Jesus passionate about? The gospel record is clear. Jesus felt deeply with those who suffered physical and emotional distress. It wasn’t just their pain. It became His pain. And it became His passion to help them relieve it. Those who are called by His name must follow in His steps.

B. Those Who Are Spiritually Seeking. Secondly, Jesus was passionate about those who were spiritually seeking. When Jesus saw a person, He didn’t just see a man or a woman, a boy or a girl, a person who was rich or poor, sick or healthy—He saw a soul, eternally ruined by sin. He was so passionate about changing the condition of that soul that He left the glories of heaven to do it. He came to “seek and save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). 1. Passionate Preaching. So when Jesus looked out on a crowd He didn’t see

consumers to be exploited or crowds to be avoided. He saw people eternally lost without direction. Mark 6:34 says, “34 When Jesus came out saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd.” So what did He begin to do? “So He began to teach them many things” (Mark 6:34). Jesus’ teaching was never arid or cold because He cared about people’s souls. He raised His voice and He called for their attention, “Listen!” (“He who has ears, let Him hear!”) Because Jesus was passionate that people know the only truth that could save their souls. a. Yes, emotion has a rightful place in the preaching and teaching of the

gospel. That’s why Paul’s pen and tongue often blazed with passionate concern as He begged and pleaded for people to accept the truth.

b. I’ve always liked Martin Lloyd Jones definition of preaching. He wrote, “Preaching is logic on fire. It is eloquent reason.” Preaching is Biblical truth coming through a person who is on fire. As Jeremiah said, “Your word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not” (Jeremiah 20:9).

c. I sometimes think this is what is missing in our evangelistic efforts. We have the truths down well enough, but people don’t get the sense that we are passionately concerned about their souls and deeply devoted to our God. If there was ever a message that deserves to be presented with some passion, it is the gospel. Do you have a passionate desire to share what you know about Jesus, with people you deeply care about?

2. Passionate Worship. Jesus was not only concerned that people have a passion for knowing the truth of God, but that they might be equally passionate about their worship of God. a. Jesus told the woman of Samaria that the time had come for “true

worshipers to worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father was

The Emotional Life Of Jesus 3 Tim Jennings

seeking such to worship Him” (John 4:23). God desires a heart and mind fully engaged in worship.

b. In fact, Jesus reserved His most passionate criticisms for the scribes and Pharisees whose worship was incredibly precise, but only skin deep—it didn’t emanate from the heart and change their lives. So with thunder like force Jesus pronounces eight different woes upon the shallowness of their worship in Matthew 23.

c. And perhaps most famously Jesus cleared the money changers out the temple grounds with whip and threat, because they were turning God’s house of prayer into a den for thieves. And when the disciples saw this emotional outburst they said, “Zeal for God’s house of worship has eaten Him up” (John 2:17, edited). The disciples could see that Jesus had a passion for people being able to worship God honestly, truthfully, from the heart.

d. Passionate worship is missing from the lives of too many believers! Some of us are so caught up in the world that spiritual truths find no joyful resonance within us. Others are so careful to identify truth they fail to consider what it means. I believe there ought to be an “oh-ness” to our worship! Go read the Psalms, and you’ll find in excess of over 400 times the passionate groan of “Oh!” “Oh, fear the Lord; Oh love the Lord; Oh magnify the Lord. Oh worship the Lord.” Worship poured out of the totality of his being, mind, body, spirit, to such a degree it could only be intensified by the passionate groan of “Oh.”

e. Is there an “oh-ness” to your worship, or do you politely keep it on the surface and carefully reserve your emotions for movies and games? If there is not an “oh-ness” to our worship we are missing one of the unique joys of knowing God and we know little about our Lord who could roar when He spoke, and weep when He prayed.

C. Those Who Were Spiritually Wandering. Ah, Jesus was passionate about those in physical distress. He was passionate about those who were spiritually seeking. But, Jesus was also graciously tender toward those who were spiritually wandering. You could see His heart break over believers who would depart. He was not arrogantly dismissive of the lost. He cared deeply for their condition.1. Those Who Leave. Just days before His crucifixion Jesus looked over the

city of Jerusalem and saw the very people who would soon call for His crucifixion, and the text says, “He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! (Luke 19:41–42). Jesus passionately loved even those who were persistently stubborn in their rejection. a. We often remember the difficult command Jesus gave the Rich Young

Ruler, “Go sell all you have and come follow Me.” But do we remember why Jesus said that? Jesus wasn’t trying to be mean and run people off. No. The text says, “Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said…go sell…come follow” (Mark 10:21). Jesus passionately desired to see spiritual wanderers come home.

b. He is the shepherd in the parable of the lost sheep, who crossed the wilderness in search of the one sheep who had strayed. When He

found it he laid it on his shoulders and rejoiced (Luke 15:4-7). Weeping, loving, searching, rejoicing, this is the passion Jesus had for the people who spiritually wandered from the way.

2. Those Who Lead. Perhaps this is why Jesus reserved His sharpest anger toward those who lead people astray spiritually. It’s why He cleansed the Temple. It’s why He pronounced the woes. a. It’s why He said in such dramatic fashion, “It would be better to have a

millstone hung around your neck and be thrown into the deepest part of the sea, than to cause even one of the weakest of my followers to stumble” (Mark 9:42 – edited).

b. One Sabbath Jesus went to the synagogue to worship, but unfortunately others came to find fault in Him. They quickly spotted a man whose hand was withered. They knew Jesus’ passion for the physically distressed, and waited to see if Jesus would heal on the Sabbath. And the Bible says, “Jesus looked around at them with anger, being grieved by the hardness of their hearts” (Mark 3:5). They were at worship, right, but they were more concerned with their man-made laws, than they were with a person’s need—and such self-centeredness angered the Lord.

3. Oh, it’s fun to be passionate about spiritual seekers who want to learn the truth and worship God. It’s a bit messier to be concerned with the spiritual wanderer who has grown weak, rebellious, or is immature. We must be passionate about restoring them in truth and not to put unnecessary burdens upon them. But, “if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins” (James 5:19-20). That is a needed work, which needs our passion.

D. Sacrificially Obeying The Father. Jesus was passionate about those in physical distress, those who were spiritually seeking, and even those who were spiritually wandering. However, Jesus clearly experienced the strongest passion at the end of His life. This is why the events surrounding Jesus’ death are often referred to as “His Passion,” because it was a time of intense emotional suffering. 1. The Suffering. His passions pour out like a flood beginning at Gethsemane

where He told His disciples, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.” (Matthew 26:38), and “he began to be troubled and deeply distressed” (Mark 14:33). And He began to pray so earnestly that “His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” (Luke 22:44). But then He was betrayed, beaten and crucified, where He makes the heart-breaking statements, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me!” and “I thirst!” and finally, “It is finished!” (Mark 15:34; John 19:28,30). When the mind is allowed to reflect on those events very long the agony He experienced is terrifying.

2. The Reason for the Suffering. And we begin to cry out, “Why?” It wasn’t because He was guilty (He was sinless). It wasn’t because He was powerless (He had twelve legions of angels at His command). It was

because He had a passion that was more important than His own comfort! He had an intense passion to obey His Father. a. You hear it in the garden when He prayed, “O My Father, if this cup

cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” (Matthew 26:42). Jesus was so passionate about doing the will of the Father He willingly sacrificed all that He had.

b. Earlier He said, “My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.” (John 12:27).

c. When you see the tears and sweat in the Garden and the blood on the cross, don’t just think about the pain, see His passion. Jesus was so passionate about obeying His Father He willingly sacrificed everything else to do it!

3. Oh, that we would capture such a passion for obeying our Heavenly Father. Where we gladly leave behind our pleasures, our comforts, our will, and seek first God’s rule over our lives; to live solely for His glory. This is the greatest of all passions! It is the fuel for every worthwhile endeavor. To be driven by the will of God is the highest aim of man. Does this describe you? That’s what it means to follow Jesus.a. Our Must! It’s captured by a single word that appears often in the

gospels, “must.” Jesus said, “I must preach the gospel; I must do the works of Him who sent Me; I must suffer; I must go; I must bring…” The Father’s will became what He must do! There was a must-ness to Jesus’ life. Unfortunately, there is a mustiness to many of our spiritual lives. And we need to develop the passion to make God’s will our must! Not our maybe! Not our sometime! Not our someday! But our must!

b. Our Food! On another occasion Jesus told His disciples, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work” (John 4:34). He was saying, “More important to Me than food is to do My Father’s will and finish His work.” I’d call that a passion! When our desire to do the will of God comes upon us more regularly and more intensely than our desire for food, then we have come to know the passion of Jesus.

E. We’ve talked about our passions and our emotional experiences. We’ve seen how we must not separate the heart from the mind; the emotions from the will. God made them both, and we only work properly when both are fully engaged. How can we do that? Two thoughts:

III. The Relationship Between The Mind & The EmotionsA. The Mind Should Control Our Emotions. In every generation there are

people who exalt emotional, religious experience over a careful understanding of Scripture. For them it is more important to feel a thing, than to know a thing; To be moved emotionally than informed mentally. They’ve put the powerful horse of emotions at the head of the cart. 1. I believe that is where we are at in some places. People are more

concerned about having powerful worship services, and meaningful The Emotional Life Of Jesus 6 Tim Jennings

Page 7: focusmagazine.orgfocusmagazine.org/.../uploads/2013/07/The-Emotional-Lif…  · Web view3.When you examine the gospels you find a full colored picture of the emotional life of Jesus

relationships, than knowing the will of God. Hearing the voice of God from His revealed Word is relegated to second place behind the expressions of our emotions.

2. But can I remind you of the mistake that some of the Jews made in Paul’s time? Paul said in Romans 10:1, “Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved.” That’s passion for spiritual seekers, but they were not listening. Do you know why? He goes on, “I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.” (Romans 10:1–2). They were blind to the truth because emotions were driving the cart!

3. Listen, our emotions are easily twisted by sin and corrupted by worldliness if they are not first submitted to the word of God. a. You take for example the young lady who left the Lord’s people to

worship with a man-made church and she says, “It just feels right.” And you lovingly reason with her from the Bible that they don’t teach the gospel message of salvation; they worship in ways God has not taught; they do things God has not authorized. And God’s word falls on deaf ears because emotions are driving the cart.

b. Or, you have a married man who says he’s fallen in love with another woman, and he says, “I can’t help myself. I love her! I must leave my wife and abandon my children, and marry this other woman.” What do you tell that man? You say, “God calls that adultery. You are not a helpless victim of your emotions. Put that woman out of your mind and do right.”

4. You see, our minds informed by God’s truth, is to be the censor of our emotions. I hope you can tell I’m very much in favor of using our emotions, but please understand that our emotions will always lead us to ruin unless they are submitted to and controlled by the mind which is set on God’s word.

B. The Mind Should Stimulate Our Emotions. But here is the exciting thing, the mind not only controls the emotions it also stimulates them! 1. Let me give you one example. One Sunday morning two disciples,

completely unaware of Jesus’ resurrection, walked the seven mile road to Emmaus. Jesus joined them on their walk and explained to them from the Scriptures that the Messiah had to suffer before entering into His glory, and he began at Moses and all the Prophets and explained to them how the Scriptures talked about Him. Later when the two disciples reflected on that Bible study they said, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32). Their hearts burned. They were clearly emotionally moved. But what kindled the burning of their hearts? It was Jesus teaching out of Scripture.

2. Noting sets the heart on fire like fresh understandings of truth (whether in private or public). It is when the mind is enlightened that the heart begins to burn. And I pray that your heart has burned today as you’ve seen Jesus fully expressing His emotional passion under the control of His Father’s will. I pray that burning will lead you to walk with Him.
