A nation of spectacular natural beauty, friendly people and rich culture, Zimbabwe’s status as one of Africa’s leading safari destinations was dampened for years by its political instability. But now that the country is transcending its strife and returning to a state of equilibrium, it is once again emerging as a vacation highlight of the continent. Victoria Falls – known to locals as ‘The Smoke That Thunders’ – is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and the sheer power of this massive body of water plunging into the Zambezi Gorge is awe-inspiring and unforgettable. Lake Kariba, with its game-rich shores and islands, is an idyllic safari spot featuring mind-blowing sunsets; Hwange National Park is known for its huge herds of elephants; and a kayak trip down the Zambezi through the Mana Pools National Park will appeal to the intrepid traveller, providing close encounters with crocodiles, hippos and a host of other wildlife.

Day 1-3: Amadeus Garden, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe (Wed, 28 December to Fri, 30 December)

Resting on the southern banks of the Zambezi river at the western end of the eponymous falls, this popular tourist town is compact enough to walk around and makes an ideal base for travellers exploring the seventh wonder of the world, the unfathomably vast Victoria Falls. About two thirds of the falls can be viewed from the Zimbabwean side and, while the falls are undoubtedly the star attraction, the area provides both adventure seekers and sightseers with plenty of opportunities to warrant a longer stay. Popular activities include scenic flights over the falls in helicopters or micro lights, bungee jumping off the Victoria Falls Bridge, white-water rafting (seasonal), and day trips to Chobe National Park. The town itself offers some excellent accommodation and restaurant options as well as an eclectic variety of African curios and authentic art sold by friendly Zimbabwean locals who are wonderfully welcoming and eager to help you enjoy your stay.

Day 3-5: Camp Chobe, Chobe River Front (Fri, 30 December to Sun, 1 January)

The Chobe River forms the northern boundary of the Chobe National Park, renowned for its reliable and diverse game viewing. Safaris are conducted both by boat and on land. This section of the park is best known for its elephant and hippo populations but the waters attract all manner of game including large herds of buffalo and the lions that prey on them.

Overnight: Camp Chobe Camp Chobe is situated in the Eastern Zambezi Region, Namibia merely 4 km from the Ngoma border post between Botswana and Namibia, across the river from the world renowned Chobe nature reserve, home to one of the largest concentrations of elephant on the African continent.

Covering approximately a third of the eastern portion of the Zambezi Region, the Zambezi and Chobe flood plains combines permanent waterways with drier areas, creating areas filled with unexpected contrasts and diverse wildlife. The Chobe flood plains are in a constant state of flux, expanding and contracting according to the rainy season. While some parts of the Chobe remain permanently flooded, others only experience high water levels from April to July, when rainwater from Zambia flow into the Zambezi and Chobe rivers.

Camp Chobe is located on these plains. The main lodge features ensuite tents built on stilts, with a central dining and bar area overlooking the Chobe river. There is also a campsite 1km away, also facing the river.

Day 5-8: Mashi Conservancy, Linyanti Concessions (Sun, 1 January to Wed, 4 January)

The Kwando-Linyanti river system is home to a series of private game reserves, known for their exotic animal species and luxury safari options. An abundance of wildlife roams freely between the woodland habitats, ancient floodplains and forests that make up these lush, unfenced reserves. The big game in this area increases dramatically during the dry season when the area hosts large herds of impala, blue wildebeest, giraffe and buffalo as well as the world’s highest density of elephant. Several packs of wild dog are found in the area and lion, leopard and cheetah are frequently sighted. Night drives allow for the discovery of nocturnal creatures such as civets, genets, honey badgers and spring hares. This vast, untamed wilderness is the perfect location for those seeking a unique African adventure in an exclusive and remote big game habitat.

Day 8-10: Mahangu Safari Lodge, Mahango Game Reserve (Wed, 4 January to Fri, 6 January)

Mahango Game Park is a small park, a short drive south of Popa Falls, on the border with Botswana. As Popa Falls is a natural point to break the long journey between Rundu and Katima Mulilo, Mahango Game Park should be considered for inclusion in the itinerary. Driving the route through the park will take approximately half a day. In order to drive the full circular route, an offroad vehicle will be needed. There is a shorter route which can be drivenby a sedan in the dry season. The effort of visiting the park will be rewarding in terms ofwildlife and bird watching. The Mahango Game Park has a high number of elephants, as well as fair numbers of antelopes which are scarce or not seen in other parts of Namibia. These include the roan and sable antelope, tsessebe and the red lechwe. The park is also home to anumber of sitatunga, however these antelopes are very scarce, and sightings will be excellent luck. The best time to see elephants and antelope will be during the dry season. Part of the park borders on the Kavango river, so the possibility of seeing crocodiles exists. In order to see hippos, the traveller should book a nocturnal game viewing trip, as hippos are nocturnal creatures. The best time for game viewing is in the dry months between March and October.The Mahango Game Park is an excellent destination for bird watching. It has three different habitats: the Kavango River, the flood plains, known as omurambas and woodlands, so a wide spread of species can be seen. The best time of year for bird watching is in the rainy months from November to February.

Overnight: Mahangu Safari Lodge The comfortably-styled, thatched Mahangu Safari Lodge is a new lodge in the Caprivi Region of Namibia, next to the Mahango National Park. The Lodge offers beautiful campsites with power points next to the river. Campers are welcome to make use of the restaurant. Mahangu Safari Lodge offers a game drives, boat trips as well as fishing excursions.

Day 10: Hakusembe River Lodge, Gondwana Collection Namibia, Kavango (Fri, 6 January)

This region of Namibia takes its name from the Kavango River on which the main town of Rundu is built. Unlike much of the country the Kavango region receives sufficient rain for cultivation.

Day 11: Treesleeper Camp, Northern Namibia (Sat, 7 January)

A region of harsh but striking scenery, Highlights include the desolate beauty of Skeleton Coast’s windswept shores, Etosha National Park with its vast pan and rich wildlife, and the remote desert region of Kaokoland, where the indigenous semi-nomadic Himba people still live an authentic tribal existence. On the northern border with Angola lie the Epupa and Ruacana Falls, both providing gorgeous spectacles for those intrepid travellers who make the trip this far north.

Day 12: Etosha Safari Camp, Gondwana Collection Namibia, Etosha National Park (Sun, 8 January)

The Etosha National Park is Namibia's premiere game viewing experience, situated in the northwest of Namibia and is an area well known for its wildlife. Vegetation ranges from dense bush to open plains attracting a diversity of wildlife. In the heart of the Park is The Etosha Pan - a shallow depression that covers an area of 5000sq kilometres. Dry and shimmering for most of the year, the pans fill up with water after good rains to a depth which is seldom deeper than 1m. In the dry season wildlife is attracted to perennial springs and waterholes that makes for excellent game viewing.Within the park are three large public rest camps catering for the more budget orientated traveller. There are several smaller establishments on the outskirts of the park on private land offering a more intimate and comprehensive experience. All of these establishments offer excellent value for money.

Day 13: Etosha Roadside Halt & Lodge, Kaokoveld (Mon, 9 January)

The Kaokoveld is a dry, mountainous and relatively undeveloped region that takes in the harsh beauty of the Skeleton Coast and the coppery sands of the northern Namib Desert. The area is inhabited by three main ethnic groups – the Damara, Herero and Himba people – each with their unique customs, traditions and rituals.

Overnight: Etosha Roadside Halt & Lodge Situated 69km NW of Kamanjab, off the C35, 0,5km north of Galton Gate (Etosha National Park). The campsite consist of 6 sites of which one a group site. Ablutions are tucked in between the granite boulders. Wood boilers (donkey) provide hot water to the showers and flush toilets are provided. No electricity is available. This campsite is situated in a wilderness area with wild animals roaming free. The campsites are not fenced and care should be taken, especially at night since predators may lurk in the dark.

Within walking distance from the campsite is a view deck over an animal drinking hole.

Day 16: Madisa Camp, Damaraland (Thu, 12 January)

Huge, untamed and ruggedly beautiful Damaraland is an exceptionally scenic landscape of open plains and spectacular rock formations. The major attractions are Spitzkoppe, the Brandberg, Twyfelfontein, Vingerklip and the Petrified Forest.

Overnight: Madisa Camp Madisa Camp is situated on the D2612 road to Twyfelfontein, a very popular route. The camp is hidden between amazing rock formations which are scattered with Bushman Paintings and has privy to an ancient Desert Elephant route that often gets visited by these beautiful giants.

Each spacious campsite has an exquisite view of the Gauntegab River bed and rock formations. The campsites have individual ablution facilities situated on stilts hidden in the tree tops. The braai facilities also double up as a heater (donkey system) for hot running water at each open air shower. The camp sites are shaded by large Mopane trees and have a low rock wall around each site.

The swimming pool and bar area are very welcoming after a long day and give you a chance to rejuvenate and enjoy your surroundings. It’s also nice to meet fellow travelers and share tails around a communal camp fire at night while the sky puts on a breath taking show of stars.

Day 17: Ameib Guesthouse, Erongo (Fri, 13 January)

The Erongo Region is one of the largest of the 13 regions found in Namibia and received its name for the majestic Erongo Massif that dominates the area around Karibib, Omaruru and Usakos. The region reaches up to the Atlantic Ocean and includes the coastal towns of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, its northern boundary ending at the Ugab River where the Skeleton Coast National Park begins its stretch to Angola.

Overnight: Ameib Guesthouse Ameib Guesthouse offers 9 old farm style rooms. 7 of these rooms are double/twin rooms with en-suite bathroom, one is a four bed family room with en-suite bathroom and one is a single room. Most rooms have a verandah. Further-on there are three Bungalows with en-suite bathrooms. The bungalows are more private and overlook a big dam.

Ameib also has 2 cabins, which are situated at the camping site, close to the guesthouse. The cabins are double/twin bed and have en-suite bathroom. Situated in front of the cabins is a barbeque facility.

At the guesthouse there is a swimming pool with bio filter, for the guests in the rooms and bungalows. Guests in the cabins at the camping site can either use the swimming pool at the camping site or the pool at the guesthouse.

Ameib has a camping site close to the guesthouse, also known as the nature camp. It is fenced off against wild animals and big trees offer shade. There are 10 sites available, each with a concrete base for tents and barbeque facility. Some sites also have picnic areas.

There is a swimming pool with bio filter directly at the camping site, as well as hot showers and toilets. In the restroom block you will also find dish washing sinks and a power point. Bundles of wood can be bought at the reception. Ameib has NO camping gear available for renting.

Ameib Guesthouse offers a variety of self-guided attractions and activities. There are a number of walking trails leading to different attractions, however some can also be reached by car.

Day 18-20: Wüstenquell Guest Farm, Namib (Sat, 14 January to Mon, 16 January)

The Namib is the world’s oldest desert, and although it stretches along the entire length of Namibia’s coastline, the Namib commonly refers to the vast sea of sand from Luderitz to Swakopmund. For a big sandy desert the scenery is remarkably varied, with the giant red dunes of Sossusvlei being the most famous part.

Because of how old it is the Namib is home to numerous species that don’t occur elsewhere and although no humans live in the desert an amazing array of flora and fauna manages to survive here. Famous species include the Welwitschia – a living fossil plant, endemic chameleons, fur seals along the coast, brown hyenas, jackals and remarkably one of Africa’s largest antelope the Gemsbok. The name Namib is of Nama origin and means "vast place" and vast it certainly is.

Overnight: Wüstenquell Guest Farm Bizarre rock formations, fantastic views, bushmen paintings, 7 fountains, a unique fauna and flora with quiver trees and the very rare lithops (living stones) make Wüstenquell a special experience! Desert Camp is situated only 5 km from the entrance gate to Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon in the Namib Naukluft Park. Nestled under centuries old thorn trees, Desert Camp offers an unsurpassed view over the desert landscape and surrounding mountains.

The 20 affordable, self-catering accommodation units under canvas are equipped with an en-suite bathroom, shaded veranda with a fitted kitchenette, barbeque, power points and an adjacent parking area. Each twin-bedded bedroom features a fold-out sleeper couch where 2 small children (under 12) can be accommodated for free when sharing with their parents.

Facilities at the main building include a fully stocked and serviced bar with big screen television, a sparkling swimming pool and 2 communal boma-areas which are perfect for groups travelling together. Fresh food supplies can be ordered daily at reception.

Sossusvlei - The VleiThis is the vlei itself where, for now, the waters of the Tsauchab River disappear into the red sands of the Namib.

Dead VleiThis ancient clay pan was once an oasis, studded with acacias and fed by a river that suddenly changed course, leaving the earth to dry up along with the trees it previously supported. So dry were the climatic conditions that the trees never decomposed – instead they were entirely leached of moisture so that today, 900 years later, they remain as desiccated, blackened sentinels dotting the pan’s cracked surface. Surrounded by the red-pink dunes of the Namibia Desert, they create a surreal spectacle that is a photographer's dream.

Sesriem CanyonSesriem Canyon, a deep chasm carved through the rocks by water, is a striking natural feature of the area that is best explored on foot. Stony walls rise up sharply on both sides of the canyon, while birds roost in its crags and lizards dart along the ledges. The canyon’s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (‘ses riem – six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of canyon.

Day 23: Sweet Thorn Retreat Airport Lodge, Central Namibia (Thu, 19 January)

The central Namibian highlands are much cooler and less harsh than the arid lowlands that make up the majority of the country. This is great cattle ranching country and most tourism facilities have their origins in cattle and more recently game ranching.

This facility has ten en-suite bedrooms with cooling and television. Seven rooms are outside the main building. Three rooms are inside the lodge building. One room has 2 double beds, One room has two 3/4 size beds and one has twin beds. All have en-suite shower facilities.

The dining area has a fully stocked bar and overlooks the pool area. Above this is an open viewing deck for guests to enjoy sundowners and stargazing. Quite often some of the antelope (waterbuck, blesbuck and springbuck) can be seen down at the floodlit waterhole.

We offer seven fully equiped 'Meeru' tents and three spacious campsites. There is plenty shading and a splash pool for children plus a small playground where the youngsters can be entertained while adults enjoy an afternoon barbecue."
