Screencast O Matic

Screencast-o-Matic (SOM) is a Java web-based application that is used to create screencasts on Windows operating systems, Mac, and Linux. SOM provides free software that allows users to record all appearance, and movement on the screen, it easy to use, can add a description or comment easily.

The Software can be downloaded at: http://www.screencast-o-matic.com or directly record online on that page, just click record, adjust the area to be recorded and enable audio for recording, if the computer has a built in camera (web cam) then it can be used to embed the camera video. also has the ability to add a text file for captioning and video sharing with the audience. The Video can be saved in the MP4, AVI, FLV, or uploaded to Screencast-o-matic, web space or YouTube.

Educators using screencasts to record lectures, demonstrations, learning orientation for online classes, video telling stories, and provide feedback on student assignments. Educators can also assignments that require the student to produce a screencast or a video.

SOM video can be created and viewed at anytime and anywhere by a user with an Internet connection and a browser. Students can learn both online as well as hybrid. Videos can be a reference for students. In general, screencasts create more attractive environment for online learning, give lectures or demonstrations like face to face learning.

After installation of Screencast-O-Matic (SOM), the software can be used without requiring registration

Record button

Record buttons used to start recording and making video

Sound button

sounds button are used to turn on the MIC, when voice are already entered into the SOM the indicator will move.

Screen size

The screen size can changed by selecting the available sizes or by drag the dotted line cut into pieces.

Web Cam

Web Cam can be turned on by pressing this button, the display of web cam will appear in the right corner of the screen, the image position of the cams can be changed after the record has finished.

At the process of recording a record menu and web cam would be closed from the screen, but web cam keep working and processes still rolling, if record is finished then hit alt+p for pause from the process of record.

Restart & Done

Restart button used to repeat from the beginning of the recording, and the done button used to terminate the recording process then enters the process of editing and storage

Editing window

On editing window  the result of recording can be seen, if the result is not good recording process can be repeated by pressing the back button to return to the recording process.

The result of the recording can be directly publish to the Internet by using the web Screen-O-Matic or Youtube, for both web you must have

The video can be also saved at the computer, click “publish to video file”

Save Video Window

In this window the recording can be saved in the MP4, AVI, FLV and GIF for the best results use the MP4 format. Size of a recording can be chosen, note and captions are used to provide a record text of the results recordings.

Web cam position can be moved or changed the size by pressing the red triangle images on the web cam. When editing is finished then you can press the button “Save Video” on the of the editing window. Select the name and place of the video will be saved, the process will be ongoing depending of the length of recording and the ability of the computer.
