Coetáni Experimental Flamenco Festival is an international institution promoting research in relation to flamenco. It is a unique festival organized in Athens/Greece, by the non-profit organization PLAYGROUND for the arts that brings to focus the most subversive side of this popular Spanish art form.
Coetáni treats flamenco as the starting point from which we can express in the present tense, creating a universal language for a global audience. This popular Spanish traditional idiom, formed from the multitude of cultures that reached the Andalusian land, is a rare example of traditional art form that has managed to keep alive by being in constant contact with its time.
The appreciation of multiculturalism increasingly strengthens as inspired and subversive artists in its circles spread around the world, creating new expressions and directions. The highly active experimental scene draws inspiration from the past and conquers more and more ground among contemporary arts, introducing innovative elements rooted in the tradition and the wide vocabulary of flamenco.
The festival includes performances, concerts, screenings, open public presentations and discussions and a full educational program of highly artistic value consisting of technique and theory workshops. In this way we offer to the participants full spectrum of the advanced and unique work of the internationally acclaimed invited artists. We create a meeting point for artists, young emerging performers, students and public from all over the world who are interested in experimentation within flamenco.
Coetáni festival focuses on the new directions and the constantly evolving dynamics of flamenco, which in tandem with the contemporary art scene, are shaping the tradition of the future.
