Create a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II

Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are popular types of graphics to use in web and print designs, but oftentimes they look unrealistic due to the way they are lit and shadowed. In this two part tutorial series we will demonstrate how to create a wooden texture and then how to create authentic-looking shadows and light using the still life objects that we will include on our board. Let’s get started by creating our bulletin board and placing our first element.

Step 1 – The Corkboard TextureCreate a new document (Size: 600px by 400px). The size is up to you but these are the dimensions we will be using in this tutorial.

Rename the first layer "corkboard."

Tip: Make sure Paths is selected for the Rectangle Tool and Rounded Rectangle Tool throughout this tutorial.

Page 2: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Using the Rectangle Tool, create a rectangle (Size: 480px by 280px).

Tip: To give a shape a fixed size, access the panel in the Options bar.

Page 3: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Right-click on the rectangle and select Make Selection.

Tip: CTRL or CMD + ENTER as a substitute for right clicking on a path and selecting Make Selection.

Make your Foreground Color #a37d54 and your Background Color #4e2f0d. These two colors are shades of brown but feel free to choose similar colors.

To produce the corkboard texture. Go to Filter > Render > Clouds then deselect the selection and always deselect a selection afterwards.

Tip: CTRL or CMD + D as a substitute for deselecting a selection.

Continuing on; go to Filter > Sketch > Note Paper (Image Balance: 32, Graininess: 11 and Relief: 12).

Go to Filter > Brush Strokes > Spatter (Spray Radius: 15 and Smoothness: 10).

Lastly, let’s give it a darker color, go to Image > Adjustments > Shadows/Highlights (Shadows – Amount: 50%, Tonal Width: 83%, Radius: 208px. Highlights – Amount: 0%, Tonal Width: 50%, Radius: 30px. Adjustments – Color Correction: +20, Midtone Contrast: -17.)

The image below is the result.

Step 2 – The Corkboard Wooden BordersIn this step, we will produce the wooden borders of the corkboard.

Make a new layer below the layer "corkboard" and rename it as "borders".

Using the Rounded Rectangle Tool, create a rounded rectangle (Size: 502px by 302px and Radius: 10px.). Right click on the rectangle and select "Make Selection".

Tip: ALT + BACKSPACE to fill in a selection with the current Foreground Color. CTRL or CMD + BACKSPACE to fill it in with the current Background Color.

Fill in this rectangle with the color #4e2f0d then deselect the selection.

Tip: To select two or more layers, SHIFT + CLICK on them.

Tip: To center two or more layers with each other, select the layers to be aligned, choose the Move Tool, in the Options Bar, click the Align horizontal centers and the Align vertical centers buttons:

Page 5: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Now, center both the layers "corkboard" and "borders".

The image below is the result.

Step 2 – The Corkboard Wooden Borders – Corner Gaps GuidelinesIn order to make each side of the borders look authentic, we need to create gaps in between their corners.

The guidelines we’ll make in this step will be used to properly select each side of the borders and putting them on different layers.

You will need to apply the procedures in this step on all corners of the corkboard.

Create a new layer above "borders" and below "corkboard" then name it "diagonal border lines" or something similar. We will use these lines as guidelines to create the diagonal gaps mentioned above.

Zoom into your image and using the Pen Tool, hold SHIFT and create a 45 degrees angled diagonal path on the top right corner as shown below.

Page 7: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Tip: Make sure the Brush Diameter Size for the Pencil tool is 1px.

Page 8: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

With the Pen Tool and layer "diagonal border lines" selected, right click, select Stroke Path, select Pencil from the dropdown menu, click OK then right click again and choose Delete Path.

Repeat Step 2 on all the other sides of the corkboard.

Step 3 – The Corkboard Wooden Borders – Separating The BordersUsing the diagonal lines we have just made, let’s use them as guidelines to select the right border of the corkboard with the Pen Tool.

After having the right border selected with the Pen Tool, right click and choose Make Selection.

Page 9: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

In order to put the right border on a new separate layer, with the layer "borders" selected, duplicate the layer. Rename the newly produced layer to "border right".

Repeat Step 3 on all the other sides of the corkboard.

After doing this, you should have each border of the corkboard on separate layers. So, now, we can delete the layers "diagonal border lines" and "borders".

Page 10: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Step 4 – The Corkboard Wooden Borders – Applying The GradientsIt’s time to apply some gradients onto our borders. Let’s start with the right border.

Tip: In order to access the Blending Options of a layer, right click on that layer and choose Blending Options.

Tip: To add a new gradient slider, place your cursor right below the gradient preview.

Page 11: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

In the Blending Options for the layer "border right", apply a Gradient Overlay (Angle: 0 degrees, First Gradient Slider: #e77d15, Second Gradient Slider: #f69834, Third Gradient Slider: #804504).

Now, the layer "border top", apply another Gradient Overlay (First Gradient Slider: #e77d15, Second Gradient Slider: #f4942d, Third Gradient Slider: #d16f04).

Next, the layer "border left", apply another Gradient Overlay (First Gradient Slider: #0d550e, Second Gradient Slider: #f4942d, Third Gradient Slider: #d16f04).

Lastly, the layer "border bottom", apply another Gradient Overlay (First Gradient Slider: #6e3c0b, Second Gradient Slider: #f4942d, Third Gradient Slider: #d16f04).

The image below is the result.

Step 5 – The Corkboard Wooden Borders – Applying The TextureRemember, you will have to repeat this step on all the other sides of the corkboard.

Duplicate the layer "border right", right click on the new duplicated layer that should be named "border right copy" and choose Clear Layer Style.

Tip: CTRL or CMD + J to duplicate a layer.

Tip: CTRL or CMD + CLICK on the thumbnail of a layer to select its contents.

Select the contents of the layer "border right copy" (CTRL or CMD + CLICK on the layer thumbnail). Fill in the selection with the color #d48631.

Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise (Amount: 33.03%, Gaussian and Monochromatic).

Go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur (Angle: 90 degrees and Distance: 24 pixels).

Here is the fun part; we will make knots on our wooden borders.

Page 13: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Go to Filter > Liquify (Brush Size: 8, Brush Density: 50 and Brush Pressure: 100). Using the crosshair in the Liquify window, pull, stretch and swirl the contents of the layer "border right copy" to make wooden knots.

Tip: You can change the opacity of a layer in the Layers panel:

Lower the opacity of the layer "border right copy" to 50%.

Rename this layer "border right wooden texture", group it with the layer "border right" and rename the group as "border right".

The image below is the result.

Stay Tuned for Part IIIn the final Part II of this series we’ll place more elements on our board and finalize this design.

Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are popular types of graphics to use in web and print designs but often times they look unrealistic due to the way they are lit and shadowed. In today’s tutorial we will demonstrate how to create a wooden texture and then how to create authentic-looking shadows and light using the still life objects that we will include on our board. Let’s continue this series (or jump over to Part I to get started), and place more elements on our board and finalize this design.

Page 27: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Step 12 – The Pin and HighlightsWe will now need a pin to stick the paper onto the corkboard.

Tip: Hold SHIFT while dragging out a selection with the Marquee Tool to make the selection proportional.

Make a new layer, select the Elliptical Marquee Tool, draw out a circle selection and fill in the selection with any color, we chose black as shown below:

In the Blending Options of the pin layer, Put a Gradient Overlay on the pin (First Gradient Slider: #9a9600, Second Gradient Slider: #e2dc00).

The image below is the result.

Page 28: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Let’s give highlights on the pin. Apply an Inner Glow on the pin (Blend Mode: Screen, Opacity: 40%, Glow Color: #ffffc8, Size: 7px).

Make a new layer on top of the pin, CTRL or CMD + CLICK on the thumbnail of the pin layer and with the Brush Tool (Size: 20px soft), paint a white spot on the top of the pin inside the selection to represent a highlight.

Step 13 – The Pin – ShadowsNow, let’s give the first shadow to the pin. Put a Drop Shadow on the pin (Opacity: 14%, Angle: 90 degrees, Distance: 1px, Spread: 0%, Size: 2px). Adding only a drop shadow to the pin is not enough so let’s add a second shadow.

Make a new layer under the layer "pin" and rename it as "pin shadow". Draw out an elliptical marquee selection and fill it in with black. Go to Filter > Blur > Gassian Blur (Radius: 5.1 pixels).

Duplicate the layer "pin shadow" and use the Free Transform Tool (CTRL or CMD + T) to resize the shadow to be longer and more narrow and lower down the opacity until it looks realistic.

Keep duplicating the shadow layers, resizing it and lowering down their opacity until the shadows of the pin look authentic enough.

Page 29: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

The image below is the result you would like to obtain.

Step 14 – The PhotographThe techniques used to create the highlights on the Sydney Opera photo are similar to those used in Step 8 – The Paper – Highlights.

Step 15 – The Popsicle StickUsing the Rounded Rectangle Tool, create an outline of a popsicle (Radius: 10px), right click, select Make Selection and fill in the selection with the color #b9752a.

Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise (Amount: 28.33%). CTRL or CMD + CLICK on the thumbnail of the popsicle layer, go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur (Angle: 90 degrees and Distance: 21 pixels). Go to Filter > Filter Gallery > Film Grain (Grain : 3, Highlight Area: 6, Intensity: 2).

Apply a Drop Shadow on this layer (Opacity: 32%, Angle: 90 degrees, Distance: 2px, Spread: 0%, Size: 1px).

Then, apply an Inner Shadow on this same layer (Shadow Color: #784206, Opacity: 100%, Angle: 90 degrees, Distance: 1px, Spread: 0%, Size: 5px).

Duplicate this layer, lower down the opacity of the new layer to 10% and group these two layers.

Page 30: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Duplicate this group to make another Popsicle stick and create the letter ‘A’ by rotating the two Popsicle sticks with the Free Transform Tool.

The image below is the result.

Step 16 – The Popsicle Stick – The GlueChoose the Brush Tool (Brush Master Diameter: 9px hard). Make your Foreground Color white and draw out some glue on the Popsicle stick.

Give the glue a Gradient Overlay (First Gradient Slider: #b9b9b9 and Second Gradient Slider: #ffffff), a Drop Shadow (Opacity: 48%, Angle: 90 degrees, Distance: 1px, Spread: 0%, Size: 1px) and lower down the opacity of this layer to 40%.

Draw some more glue to give it an overflowing look if you would like.

The image below is the result.

Page 31: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Step 17 – The Popsicle Stick – Break itNow, create the bridging stem of the letter ‘A’ by duplicating another Popsicle stick and rotating it.

After that, select all Popsicle stick layers, right click and select "Merge Layers". Choose the Pen tool and draw out some zigzag lines to make it seem as if the Popsicle stick was broken apart. Right click on the path, choose Make Selection and press BACKSPACE to delete everything inside the selection on that layer.

The image below is the result.

Page 32: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Step 18 – The Popsicle Stick – I (heart) MomMake a new layer, with the Brush tool (Brush Master Diameter: 2px hard), zoom in and paint some text on the Popsicle, we wrote "I (heart) Mom". Give this text an Inner Glow (Blend Mode: Normal, Opacity: 44%, Noise: 100%, Glow Color: #ed57ff, Size: 5px).

The image below is the result.

Page 33: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Step 19 – The Popsicle Stick – The StringMake a new layer, using the Pen Tool, draw a small string on top of the Popsicle, right click on the path and select Make Selection. Choose the Marquee Tool, right click on the selection and choose Stroke (Width: 2, Color: Black, Location: Inside). Deselect the selection.

Use the Free Transform Tool to rotate the string to your liking and use the ARROW KEYS to move the string to the center of the Popsicle.

Now, use the Eraser Tool (Brush Size: 20px hard) and erase the bottom part of the string as shown below:

Page 34: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Put a Gradient Overlay on this string (First Gradient Slider: #b5b4b4, Second Gradient Slider: #ededed), a Drop Shadow (Opacity: 70%, Angle: 90 degrees, Distance: 1px, Spread: 0%, Size: 1px). Duplicate this layer, right click on the new layer produced and choose Clear Layer Style.

Select the new layer, go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise (Amount: 37.74%, Gaussian and Monochromatic) and lower down the opacity of the noise layer to 10%.

It is pretty impossible that a string can be stuck on a stick without any adhesive material so add some glue on the string using the same technique we used in Step 16 – The Popsicle Stick – The Glue.

The image below is the result.

Page 35: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Lastly, duplicate a pin, change the color if you would like and move it over the string so it looks like the pin is holding the Popsicle stick onto the corkboard.

The image below is the result.

Page 36: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

Step 20 – The BackgroundMake a new layer under all the other layers, rename it as "background" and fill it in with the color, #8e4917. Feel free to add some texture and effects to the background.

Make another layer on top of the layer "background", choose the Brush Tool (Brush Master Diameter: 600px soft), make your Foreground Color #ffc000 and paint some highlights on top.

Group these two layers together

The image below is the result.

Step 21 – The Shadow of The CorkboardIn this last step, we will create the shadow of the corkboard.

Make a new layer above the background but below all things on the corkboard, make a rectangular selection roughly 20 pixels smaller than the size of the corkboard and fill it in with black. Next, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur (Radius: 8.8 pixels), move the shadow downwards.

The image below is the result.

Page 38: Web viewCreate a Bulletin Board With Realistic Shadows, Part I & II. Shadows and lights can make or break a composition. Bulletin boards (or corkboards) are

ConclusionAdd more objects to give your corkboard more variation.
