About BIT Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), originally named the Academy of Natural Sciences, is a research-oriented public university under the direction of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It receives considerable trilateral supports and endowments under the agreement signed by Ministry of Education, the Commission of Science, Technology & Industry for National Defense, and Beijing Municipal Government in September 2000. BIT offers 66 undergraduate programs, 193graduate programs, 97 doctoral programs and 19 postdoctoral programs. There are over 27,000 students, including 14,943 undergraduates, 7,878 master’s degree candidates and 3,238 PhD candidates from nearly 100 countries and regions. Since BIT’s founding in 1940, more than 200,000 students have graduated from BIT. There are over 3,500 staff members, including over 2,100 full-time faculty members. The first low-angle, height finding radar in China, designed by BIT, was put into use in 1958.

The first sounding rocket in China, designed and developed by BIT, was launched in 1958.

The first planetarium in China was designed and developed by BIT in 1958.

The first TV system in China was designed and established by BIT in 1958.

BIT: A Leading University in China The 10th university approved to enter “985 Project”, which developed 39 Chinese

universities aiming at the world class research-oriented universities since May, 1998.

One of the first 15 universities approved to enter “211 Project”, which aims to cultivate 100 key institutions of higher education in China for the 21st century in 1995.

One of the first 16 national key universities in China in 1959.

Now, BIT has established collaborative ties with more than 200 universities from 59 countries and regions in the world.

BIT has established two Confucius Institutes with University of Lagos (2009) and University of Saskatchewan (2012). Both Confucius Institutes are committed to set up the comprehensive platform for Chinese language teaching, Chinese cultural studies and cultural exchange activities; The Institutes have strengthened the co-operation with the partner universities in teaching, scientific research and administration.
