ACTIVITY REPORT

April - June 2015

Introduction

Over half way through its second year and associated theme ‘Exmoor’s Inspiring Landscapes (Woodlands)’, activity from April to June 2015 is set out in the table below, following the same format as within the Action Plan submitted in the original bid for funding. There are additional elements at the end of the table which pick up uncompleted activity from Year 1, or where activities are naturally continuing from Year 1 into Year 2.

Please refer to the Project spreadsheets which document the figures used within the table below. The table sets out an ongoing tally of outputs for the entire Project (column 4), quantifying activity since August 2013 (the Project start). Targets for Year 2 appear in column 2, and then the overall tally of activity for Year 2 appears in column 3. For a full written description of activity for each previous quarter of the Project please refer to the details set out in previous reports.

This has been an exciting quarter with Heritage Officer, Louise, dropping to 3 days per week which has meant seeking a new member of the team to ‘back fill’. We are delighted to now have Abbie Thorne as Heritage Project Assistant who started at the beginning of June.

2 Young Champions from the Mosaic Youth Project set themselves the challenge of walking a route across Exmoor with an Exmoor Pony and camping out, some in medieval costume. This took place at the end of June with great success (after an initially exciting start involving a runaway pony and a free-roaming stallion!)

Exmoor Young Farmers have recorded memories and hopes about Exmoor’s Hill Farming across the generations and they are aiming at an exhibition of

The 2 additional challenges, one for the region’s schools and one for the region’s colleges (“Exmoor Uncut” and “Exmoor Revealed”), set for August 2015, have been cancelled owing to lack of up-take.

Staff at the Ilfracombe Academy were initially very keen to progress this activity strand but further attempts to engage with them came to nothing.

In October 2015 the Project will be delivering this as a photo-challenge in partnership with the National Trust as part of Year 3 activity.

Given the above activity and that undertaken previously within the Project, Sneaky Fox will no longer be delivering a John Muir Award as previously discussed.

o Louisa Film Showing – as part of the Exmoor Coast Festival, viewings of this stirring film retelling the tale of the 1899 Overland Launch through animation were shown in the Pavilion theatre

o Inspired by Exmoor Music & Song – again as part of the Exmoor Coast Festival, songwriters and performers Saffron Summerfield & Heidi entertained a full theatre with new harp, guitar and mandolin music and song, all inspired by Exmoor landscape, stories and heritage

o Inspiring Woodlands – linked to our memory challenge, this was a drop-in event led by Paul South of Moor Coppice & Chris Jelley of Storywalks. Paul demonstrated green woodworking, using recently felled timber from a local ancient woodland site managed for conservation. Chris used inspiring strips of slate for visitors to chalk on words about their Exmoor day as ‘ancient tweets’ which he then retweeted into 2015.

o Cliff Railway Talk & Tour x 2: these are popular sessions including a slide show and film of the development and mechanics of the Cliff Railway, delivered by the Managing Engineer of the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway

The Project has commissioned a Heritage Workshop Facilitator to develop 10 bespoke, self-contained new workshops which volunteers will be trained to deliver into the future. These have been delivered at several events throughout the year and have been well received, with more planned during the Summer period. Her calendar of events and details of activities is attached

A volunteer installed the time-lapse camera to capture the emergence of Spring in various locations: snowdrops, bluebells and trees of Watersmeet Valley but again with limited success. We hope to edit this into something meaningful in due course.

We have commissioned a film to show ‘Old Lynmouth’ before the flood using old B&W images with special 3D software.

Exmoor’s oldest tree, The General, is being filmed through the year, showing ‘A Year in the Life of the General’, including drone footage and a crane to reach the uppermost branches. This film will then be taken around to 4 local schools by the film maker to engage the children in the filming process as well as the heritage of the tree.

7 individuals have been identified as ‘characters’ of Exmoor’s working woodlands in all its guises (from tree nursery to commercial conifer plantation). They are being interviewed on camera about their work and their unique relationship to Exmoor’s woodlands.

As part of the Exmoor Shorts series, a film has been completed about a lady in Combe Martin who worked in the strawberry jam factory and on the allotments in years gone by.

During the woodland adventure days we have interviewed members of the public to ask them what they love most about Exmoor’s woodlands. This is an on-going piece of work which will be edited together into a final piece at the end of the year.

We have been approached by members of the Culbone community to develop a film about the ancient Culbone Hamlet which is now lost to the woods of Culbone aside from a mysterious church which can only be accessed on foot. Initial meetings have been held to discuss how this will develop and we look forward to developing this over the next quarter, perhaps showing the resulting film within the church itself.

A volunteer took time-lapse film of a local artist painting the Valley of Rocks and has donated the footage to the Project.

The same volunteer took impressive time-lapse footage of 7 days and nights over the Valley of Rocks, showing the skyscape. He kindly also donated use of this to the Project.

Local interest in the Poetry written as part of the Poetry Box Project in the Valley of Rocks during 2014 has led to a poetry trail linking Lynmouth and Lynton to the Valley of Rocks. This has developed into a nice partnership between the Project, Lynton & Lynmouth Town Council and a local resident. The best 77 poems now appear along the trail, ending in a concentrated cluster at the Poet’s Shelter within the Valley itself.
