High Level Christian Academy “Love Your Neighbour” “Love your neighbour as yourself.” Matthew 22:39b December 2019 Newsletter FROM THE PRINCIPAL November is nearly over! The countdown has begun to get us to Christmas and the break that surrounds that special day. Schedules are filling up quickly as everyone prepares for the holidays. We hope that you will keep your schedule open for our Family Fun Night! For those new to our community, most years, HLCA staff prepare students to present a traditional Christmas program and on alternate years, we host a fun evening of family crafts, snacks, music and stories. This year, it’s the Family Fun Night event! It is open to the community from 6:30 to 8:30 on Wednesday, December 18th. Staff could use some assistance to prepare for this so if you have time in December, we would appreciate your time and effort. Praise the Lord with us that fundraising has been starting off so well this year! Thanks so much to our committee for their many hours of planning and legwork for the bottle drive, the perogy supper, Purdy's and FundScrip. Please note that while most fundraisers have time limits, FundScrip is an ongoing program that we can run year round. The companies that participate with gift cards are listed at the school. Please take time to look at the list and consider which company cards you will use. The committee will attempt to stock cards that are commonly used. With the holiday gift giving time approaching, let the school or Miranda Wiebe know what you expect to use. Share the program with those outside our school community as this is a great way for people to support the school without much effort and no extra cost since they intend to spend this money anyway. FundScrip information will be presented at the AGM tonight as well, if you have questions. Students have had the opportunity to love their neighbours in many ways so far this year. In November they contributed to Christmas Shoeboxes through Samaritan's Purse. Thanks to all the parents for supporting this wonderful ministry. Another opportunity will happen this week as students will be encouraging military service men and women through cards, letters and pictures. Mrs. Wolfe is 1

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

November is nearly over!

Mrs. Wolfe is teaching the students some fun numbers that they will be sharing with us at the Family Fun Night in December. Finally, if you have not already, please take time to complete the survey that was sent out to your emails regarding school choice. The information is being gathered by the Ministry of Education in Alberta and has a deadline of Friday, Dec. 6th. We need to show them that we care about these issues and this is an official way to do that. If you did not receive the email, please go to the following link. https://www.alberta.ca/choice-in-education-engagement.aspx You can also contact the school and we will send it to you. This survey has been sent out all over Alberta. Those opposed to the funding and even existence of independent school systems will not neglect to fill out their surveys. Please help us in being a significant voice for choice in Alberta. We pray that HLCA news inspires and encourages you. We thank you for standing with us and supporting us in educating children through a Biblical Worldview. May you experience the richest of blessings from our Lord as we seek to bless our neighbours throughout this joyful season!

"But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord." Luke 2:10-12Mrs. Zorrilla

CLASSROOM REMINDERS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

ECS:The month of November flew by as I was gone for 2 weeks. Holidays are wonderful, but it always feels good to come home. We are right on track in all our subjects and the students are always eager to know what letter we are learning next. In December, the plan is to cover letters/sounds for: B, AI, J, and a week of review. We will also be finishing up the first math booklet in the coming week - which means we are half done math for the year! There will be more review in math too, in order to ensure the students have retained the information taught up until now. A couple of other topics we will be learning about include: living and nonliving things, mapping, Joseph’s life, healthy foods, and the best one of all - Jesus’s birth! We will also be decorating and completing some Christmas crafts in anticipation for our Christmas Family Fun Night. I hope to see everyone out for that!

GRADES 1-3:LA: Gr 1’s will continue journal and paragraph writing and begin shared and guided writing. Gr 2’s will continue paragraph writing using dress-ups (adverbs) and openers. They will also be outlining and summarizing paragraphs. Gr 3’s will use key word outlines to rewrite their own new paragraphs with dress-ups and openers, and continue to use dress-ups and openers. They will soon be introduced to thesauruses and fables. Gr 1’s spelling words will focus on U, E, S, QU, X, and consonant digraphs sh, th, and ch. Gr 2’s spelling words will include plurals, blends, long I, O and U, vowel consonant E (V-C-E), EE, and /z/

sounds. Gr 3’s spelling words will be centered around soft c and g, tch and dge. Math: Gr 1-3’s will all soon be learning about measurement and geometry. Gr 1’s & 2’s will be wrapping up with Measurement and Geometry. After that we will be moving on to Probability and Data, then Number Sense (adding and subtracting). Gr 3’s will work on Measurement and Geometry, then Skip Counting and Multiplication. Science: We will continue with our unit on Building with a Variety of Materials. We are good for materials right now, but please do continue collecting them for us. I’ll send another list home when we need more, but our classroom is currently full of materials (and running out of storage room). We will be needing materials until the end of February, so I really appreciate you saving these for our class. Projects will be sent home as they are completed. Social: We have begun a new unit. Up until now we have been learning about 3 Canadian communities: Iqaluit, Meteghan, and Saskatoon. Now we will be learning more about specific people groups that live in those communities, their culture, traditions, and how people connect with each other. We will be learning specifically about Inuit, Acadian, and Ukrainian people. *Please remember to sign and return spelling tests, and send printing practise books back to school daily. Please also sign and return your child’s agenda every day. Thanks.*

GRADES 4-6:In LA this month we will continue reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, by C. S. Lewis; I would like to show the film at the conclusion of our unit and do a novel/movie comparison. Keep a look

out for permission slips coming home for that. In Social Studies, we will start chapter 3 in our textbooks and we will learn about Alberta’s many natural resources (renewable, non-renewable, and sustainable), their uses, and how they effect our daily life. In Science we are continuing our study of light and shadows; as you are preparing for Christmas, perhaps take the time to compare what Jesus meant when He states that He is “the light of the world.” What we are learning about light and shadow has a unique application when we consider the metaphor of Christ as the light of the world. In Math, the grade 4s will be learning to identify pattern rules. The grade 5s will be focusing on division ending their unit with long division; they will finish December with a quick review of length measurements. The grade 6s will wrap up their review of measurement and begin learning about angles, triangles, and polygons.

GRADES 7-9:In Bible, we will be learning about Philosophy and what the Bible has to say about truth and how we can know truth. The students will be focusing on what is truth and its immutability and objectiveness. They will have a test before going on Christmas break along with other projects. In Health, we have been learning about how each person learns, how to study and creating study plans for daily study. We have taken this further and looked at the qualities and skills employers look for. Each student will be writing their own resumé and has been asked to gather letters of references from employers, trusted adults who are not family, youth leaders, etc. The students will be creating a portfolio of letters, awards, and their resumé to help prepare them for job hunting in the future.

Grade 7Math: Grade 7’s will be completing their unit on geometry before moving on to number sense. Their geometry test is on December 9th. LA: Students are currently working on their independent novel study. As students work at their own pace to complete a flipbook based on their novel, it is possible that they will have homework over the Christmas break.Science: We will finish the unit on Heat and Temperature by Christmas break. The unit test is scheduled for December 19th.Grade 8Math: We will be completing several smaller units this month, including square roots, probability and data management and they will start a unit on measurement before Christmas break. Expect students to have math homework most days. Unit tests will be on December 9th and 16th. LA: The grade 8’s will be completing their short stories unit and will have their unit test on December 19th. Science: Students will be completing their unit on cells and systems and will be writing their unit test on either December 19th or 20th. Grade 9Math: Students will be completing a unit on linear relations this month, with their unit exam on December 19th.LA: Grade 9’s are wrapping up their unit on short stories and writing their unit test on December 18th. Science: We are nearing the end of our second unit on matter and chemical change. This unit will be completed before the Christmas break and students will be writing their unit test on December 19th.
