Introduction

Mirror Mirror has been adapted by Red Earth Theatre from the well known and treasured fairy tale, Snow White. Many of us are familiar with the story and the characters, either through the Grimm’s Brothers fairy tale anthology, the Christmas pantomime, or popular films. Most of us will have seen some, or all, of the classic Walt Disney film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). Recent film adaptations like, Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) and Mirror Mirror (2012) have treated us to more visceral re-workings of the famous tale. The story has universal appeal to children and adults alike, dealing with the triumph of good over evil, the nature of beauty, jealousy and the desire for eternal youth.

The Original Story – Little Snow White

For a reminder of the original story, please follow this ink to Little Snow White the version of the Bothers Grimm story, used as the basis for Red Earth Theatre’s adaptation.

Style of Red Earth’s Version of the story – Mirror MIrror

Red Earth Theatre has been creating new work and adapting classics for children and families for 17 years. Mirror MIrror follows in Red Earth’s tradition of adapting classic fairy tales by honouring the original story whilst bringing modern touches, characters with depth and introducing the odd unexpected twist to each re-telling. Mirror Mirror is the ideal vehicle for Red Earth’s inclusive work, which is funny, visual and physical and takes children to the darker side of stories with sensitivity and care.

The audience is invited, as guests, to attend the wedding of Snow White and the Prince. It is the night before the wedding and we are included in an unscheduled party, where Snow White is spending her last night as a princess with her faithful, life-long friend, Cook. Preparations for the wedding are complete and there is now time to reflect on Snow White’s adventures and to marvel at how she survived the evil intentions of her wicked Step Mother on her journey.

Rapidly changing between characters, costumes and performance styles, the company of two performers will bring the story of Snow White alive through story telling, comedy, puppetry, magic and movement.

Red Earth remains faithful to many elements of the original tale, introducing a few twists and surprises on the way. There are references to other well know fairy tales and characters, that will delight and engage audiences, as well as fulfilling their expectations that the story of Snow White has been honoured.

Design

Set and Costume: designed by award winning designer Laura McEwen

The set places the action and audience at the heart of last minute wedding preparations. The wedding cake and all the trappings of the wedding feast are nearly ready and provide the context for the action. Each object, prepared for the wedding feast, becomes part of the re-telling of Snow White’s story.

Wedding plinths upturn and become the forest. The banquet table provides a puppetry platform for the dwarfs’ house. The layers of the wedding cake transform into the wicked Queen’s boudoir boxes, including her secret potion box. Everything on set helps recreate all the main settings for the action of the story – the Royal Castle, the wicked Queen’s boudoir, the forest, the dwarf’s cottage.

Projected captions are designed to fit aesthetically within the overall style of the story. An area of the set provides a space for projection and shadow puppetry and of course, there is a magic mirror.

Puppets: designed by Laura McEwen and made by Nick AshThe puppets add an extra dimension to the storytelling. Laura McEwen cleverly plays with scale in more ways than one. There is a puppet version of Snow White that interacts with the seven dwarfs as puppets in a puppet sized environment. There is also the lead dwarf puppet – Eric – whose scale matches the life sized Snow White in her life-sized world. Moments of shadow puppetry add even more magic to the telling of our story.

Lighting: by Alexandra Stafford Alex has lit Red Earth Theatre’s last 6 shows bringing lighting magic to both stage and rural touring venues for us. The lighting will work to reflect the changes in performance style and mood. For example, colour and warmth will highlight the comic and happier moments in the story. Her ability to create atmosphere through lights is put to great effect in the show, particularly in the forest scene. Up lighting also helps create shadows for moments of danger and threat.

Emil and the Detectives –

Access

Sign Language Interpreted Performances:

The actors are using sign language - British Sign Language (BSL), and Sign Supported English (SSE) - and English simultaneously on stage. The integration happens throughout the performance so that Deaf and hearing people have equal access to the dialogue at all times. The access will be equal but may not be the same at all times. For hearing audiences the use of visual sign enhances the theatrical style of performance.

There is a difference between BSL and SSE. BSL is a complete language in its own right with a different grammar and syntax from English. The language is a combination of hand signs, mouth shapes and facial expressions. SSE fuses spoken word and sign. The signing fits directly with the words being spoken.

Gestural Language: younger sign language users are like younger English speakers, their understanding of BSL is growing and will not be at the same level as adult BSL signers. To allow for this, as well as BSL and SSE, Red Earth’s performances include physical and gestural sign. This isn’t mime, but a theatricalisation of the natural gestures and signs we use in everyday life. As with dialogue, Red Earth spends a lot of time in rehearsals considering the best form of communication to use to ensure that children in the audience can access the signs at an appropriate level.

Captions:

Red Earth is keen to do more to increase access to its work. We have carried out in depth research in to the provision of age sensitive captioning for children. The resounding response from children of all ages is that they want the full captions to be provided, even if they cannot always read everything. Deaf and hearing children do not want to be treated differently. In response, Mirror Mirror will be fully captioned using a projection area within the set that blends with the overall design aesthetics.

appeal. Based on a well-known classic fairy tale enjoyed by generations of readers and film

lovers. Intimate theatre experience and visual style ideal for young audiences. Captions to improve access for hard of hearing audiences. Integrated sign language means that all of the performers use sign language on
